Be it known that I, ALBIN I-I. HUToriiNcs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo', in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the follo-wing is a specification.
This invention relates to a sash fastener,
and has for its object the production of a de-V vice of this character which is simple and inexpensive in construction, easily operable,
and also capable of being readily applied to practically all windows as now generally constructed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is lfragmentary elevation of a window, showing my improved sash fastener applied to the opposingvparts of its upper and lower sashes. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section, on an enlarged scale, taken on line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation of the sash fastener applied to the lower sash. Although this inventionis applicable to windows of various kinds and also other forms of .closures for openings, the same is shown in the drawings, for example, applied toa window having a frame 1, a lower inner sash 2 and an upper outer sash 3,-these sashes being guided at the corresponding1 vertical edges ont-he frame in the usual an well known manner.
In its general organization, my -improved sash fastener which is associated with these two sashes, comprises a base mounted on the lower sash, a slide or carriage mounted on the base so as to be capable of movement toward and from the inner face on the side of the uppersash, and a pair 0f llned grip ping members pivotally mounted on the slide and adapted' to engage'the inner side of the upper sash. Sliding transversely on top ofthe base plate l is a carriage or slide 9' which is guided in its movements by means of longitudinal guide flanges 10 arranged adjacent to its lower side and engagingwith the guideways 5 ofthe base. This slide or carf riagel may bemoved transversely in a variety ofpways,the means for this purpose shown in the drawings beingsuitable and `comprising an adjusting shaft or spindle 1l ar' ranged horizontally and transversely with reference to Vthe/sashes and having its rear or outer rend provided with an external screw thread 12 which rengages .withk an in; ternal screw threaded opening 13 in the carriage while its outer end is provided with ahandle or thumb piece 14 for manipulating the same and its central partis mounted on the lug 6,.so as to be capable of .turning therein but held against lengthwiseA or axial movement thereon. `v i i The connection betweenllthis adjusting spindle and the lug 6 is.- preferably effected byproviding-the lug with any upwardly opening notch' 15 in its central .part into which the adjusting spindleV may be introduced from above, and providing thisspinv` dle with front and rear shoulders or collars 16, 17, which engage withthe front and rear sides of the lug 6 and thereby confine the spindle against axial .movementin Athis lug although permittingthe same to beturiied freely. Normally, the gripping levers` diverge rearwardly from the pivot pin 20, the lower lever being arranged below a horizontal line drawn through its pivot andthe upper lever labove this line. At their outer or rear ends lowerlgripping levers or toggles 18, 19, en- Y gage with the inner side orsurface of the upper sash at points above :and below a horizontal line drawn through thel pivot pin 20, it will be impossible to raise or lower x either one of the sashesrelative tothe other. A sash fastener adapted to be interposed between -two relatively movable win- -dow members, comprising a base adapted to be secured to one of said window lmembers and provided with a transverse guideway, a carriage -slidable in said guideway, upper and lower gripping levers pivoted at their inner ends on said carriage and adapted to engage their outer endswith the other window member on opposite sides of the axis of the pivotal connection. between said levers and said carriage, said lower lever sliding on said base, and said upper lever being provided With a nose adjacent to its fulcrum, and a spring mounted on said carriage and having alsalient portion one side or the other of which is adapted to be engaged by the nose of said upper lever.
