RocKlNG CHAIR.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.2. I9I5.

UNITE FREDERICK II. MUELLER, or GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
RocKING-CHAIR.
Application filed August 2, 1915.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. MUEL- LER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State o-f Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rocking chairs, and it is the object and purpose of the invention to provide means for adjusting the rockers on chairs of this character to different positions with respect to the body of the chair so that the chair may be made to pitch or swin-g properly for any individual. As at present constructed rockers are attached to a chair body and given the proper pitch or swing that would be best for an individual of average weight and size. My invention contemplates the adjustment of the rockers to suit diferent individuals.
An illustration of an embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in whic Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rocking chair equipped with my invention, parts being broken away and shown in section to disclose the attachment of the rocker to the chair body.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the rocker detached; and
Fig. 3 shows a plan and side View of the attaching plate.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
The body of the ychair is indicated at 1 below which are positioned at each sidethereof as usual, the rockers 2. Said rockers have an intermediate portion cut away to form the opening indicated at 3. An elongated plate preferably of metal indicated at 4L is attached to the upper edge of the rocker by means of the screws or other suitable fastenings 5, this plate extending over the opening 3 in the rocker. The plate is provided with slots 6 of considerable Specification of Letters Patent.

length which are located above the opening 3 in the rocker and Ithrough which extend the lower ends of bolts 7 which pass through horizontal frame members 8 of the chair body. Nuts 9 thread on to the bolts and bear against the underside of the plate 5, in this manner fas-tening the rocker to the body 1 of the chair.
By loosening the nuts 9 Ithe rocker 2 with its attached plate 4 may be moved back and forth relative to thel body of the chair a distance limited b-y the length of the slot 6. In this manner the pitch or swing of the chair may be adjusted to suit different individuals, it being understood that a rocker that is most comfortable for. one person will not be so for 'another of dierent physical build. A rocker made to suit the average 'build and weight of an individual is not satisfactory and heretofore weights have been used to balance the rocker to change the center of mass thereof for different individuals. This also has been found unsatisfactory. My present invention permits, in a simple and inexpensive manner, the easy adjustment of the rockers with respect to the body ofthe chair for any individual, 'doing away with the objections to chairs of this character heretofore made. The adjustment may be made very quickly and easily and almost instantly; and when the rocker has been adjusted to any desired position it can be securely retained in that position by tightening the nuts 9.
I claim:-
1. In a rocking chair, a chair body having under side frame members, rockers, a plate provided with elongated slots attached to the upper edge of each rocker, bolts extending through the side frame members and the slots in said plates, and nuts threaded on the bolts to bind the plates against said frame members.
2. In a rocking chair, a chair body having under side frame members, bolts extending downwardly through Said frame members,
a rocker for each side of the chair comprised of a curved member having spaced apart front and rear upwardly extending portions the upper edges of which lie in substantially the same plane, a plate on said portions bridging the space therebetween,
said plate being `provided with slots above said spiace between the upwardly extending portions of the r'oe'ker and through which the lower ends-of sad'bolts extend and nuts on the bolts, substantially as described.
