SPRING FABRIC.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1918.
Application filed September 13, 1913. Serial No. 789,605.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. LAVEZZI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spring fabrics of the slat type (for use for instance, as bed springs, couch springs, and the like) in which the supporting members of the structure comprise longitudinal and cross slats, and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, efficient and reliable means for connecting or interlocking the two sets of slats. Speaking in general terms, my invention comprises a series of longitudinal slats and a series of cross slats having tongues arranged to interlock with the longitudinal slats, the outer ends of the cross slats being preferably fixedly secured to the outermost longitudinal slats. As a result of the use of my invention, the structure is compara tively easy and inexpensive of manufacture and the slats are maintained in the proper fiat condition and sufficient movement or play at the intersections of the two series of slats is afforded. Other novel and advantageous features of the construction will be apparent from the description hereinafter ven.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bed spring structure embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a vertical sectional elevation on the line 22 of Fig. 1 but on a somewhat larger scale; Fig. 3 a bottom plan view of a portion of the bed spring structure but on a larger scale than in Fig. 1; Fig. 4; a section on the line 4- of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 a section on the line 55 of Fig. 1 but on a larger scale.
Referring to the embodiment of my invention in a bed spring as herein shown, the structure includes a frame of suitable construction and proportions in which the slat structure is mounted. As shown this frame comprises two longitudinal bars 1 each having at its ends suitable brackets 2 to which are secured the end strips 3, here in the form of angle irons. These strips constitute the means for holding one end of a series of coiled springs 4, such strips being provided with holes for that purpose. The other ends of these springs are inserted in holes in the series of longitudinal slats 5 with the resultthat each slat is supported at its ends by coiled springs, one spring at each end as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. As shown in Fig. 5 I prefer to form the ends of the outermost slats 5 with loops 5 with the result that the ends of their springs 4: are guarded and thereby prevented from catching the bed clothes. In the present instance each loop 5 is formed from the material of the slat itself by being doubled over and the free end being held by means of the rivet 6.
The series of cross slats 7 are by preference fixedly secured by means of the rivets 8 or otherwise to one or more of the outermost longitudinal slats 5 and their intermediate portions are interlocked with such longitudinal slats by means of the tongues 9. These tongues are preferably formed by stamping from the body of the cros slats, members of each pair of tongues projecting downwardly and toward each other so as to hold between them the longitudinal slats 5. The construction and arrangement are such that these slats 5 are held in proper spaced position and in flat form and at the same time provision is made for whatever slight play or movement may be necessary in the actual use of the structure.
My invention relates to spring fabrics generally and while I have herein shown and described it as embodied in a bed spring, it will be understood that I do not intend to limit myself to such particular use but that I contemplate using the same wherever applicable.
I claim:
In a spring fabric, the combination of a frame, a series of longitudinal slats, springs between the frame and the ends of the slats, and a series of cross slats connected with the other slats, the ends of the outermost longitudinal slats being looped and provided with opening to receive and guard the ends of their springs.
SAMUEL J. LAVEZZI.
