Description

,J. F. RYAN. COMBINATIONTOOL.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT-24.1918.

nv MENTOR JOHN rRAnoIs sun, or TAGGERTY, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1918.
Application filed September 24, 1918. Serial JlTo. 255,413.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN FRANCIS RYAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Taggerty, in the State of Victoria, Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has been devised to provide a combination tool which will accomplish three distinct functions. In describing and illustrating my invention I shall referto a tool combination comprising a pick hoe and shovel. The peculiar construction of the instrument embodying my invention permits the same handle to be employed for each respective class of work above mentioned. This arrangement will be appreciated by in terested persons, inasmuch as that it dis penses with the necessity of having three separate tools, the handling is facilitated, the weight of the combination tool is largely reduced in comparison with three separate tools and the former is easily carried to and fro from work and the possibility of mislaying one tool is obviated. The cost of manufacture being small the combination tool may be made and sold at low price. In order that my invention may be the more easily understood reference will be made to the accompanying sheet of drawings in which Figure 1 illustrates the combination tool being employed as a pick or hoe;
Fig. 2 illustrates the handle in position when it is desired to perform shoveling work;
Fig. 3 illustrates the combined tool with the handle removed, while Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the head hereinafter referred to.
In the accompanying drawings a combination tool is illustrated in which a is a pick, and b a shovel and hoe. Integral with such formation is a head 0 constructed to provide tapering recesses d and 01' disposed at right angles to each other. I
.When it is desired to use the tool as a shovel, the tapering circular end of the handle 7 is inserted the direction indicated by the arrow, see Fig. 2, and driven home in the recess d, and if it is desired to use the tool as a pick or hoe (see Fig. l) the handle is inserted in the direction indicated by an arrow and its enlarged end fastened in the recess 03. If desired a suitable screw 6 passing through th threaded slots 6 may be employed as additional fastening means to retain the handle I firmly in position.
It is obvious that head 0 may be varied in its formation, recesses d and 03 provided therein may be formed to correspond with the required shape of the securing end of the handle 7. I would also have it understood that a combination of tools other than a pick hoe and shovel may be employed without departing from the ambit of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. As a new article of manufacture. a combination tool comprising a tool member, a head centrally secured thereto and having therein a tapered straight sided socket and also a round socket, and a handle adapted at one end to fit the tapered straight sided socket and at the other end to fit the round socket.
2. As a new article of manufacture. a combination tool comprising a tool member. a head centrally secured thereto and having therein a tapered straight sided socket and also a round socket, a handle adapted at one end to fit the tapered straight sided socket and at the other end to fit the round socket, and means for securing the handle in place in the said sockets.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a combination tool comprising a tool member, a head secured centrally thereto and having a tapered straight sided socket placed therein transversely of the tool and also a round socket therein placed longitudinally of the tool, and ahandle adapted at one end to fit the tapered straight sided socket and at the other end to fit the round socket. I
.4. As a new article of manufacture, a com bination tool comprising a tool member, a head secured centrally thereto and having a tapered straight sided socket placed therein transversely of the tool and also a round socket therein placed longitudinally of the tool, there also being holes placed trans and the configuration of the versely in the said head and at right angles In testimony whereof I have signed my to the round socket therein, a handle adaptname to this specification in the presence of ed at one end to fit the tapered straight sided tWo subscribing witnesses.
socket and at the other end to fit the round JOHN FRANCIS RYAN. socket, and a bolt adapted to pass through Witnesses:
the said holes in the head to secure the handle A. O. SAGHSE,
in position in the said sockets. AUGUSTINE THOMAS MADDEN.
