IlPATET. r l
CHRISTIAN GILSON, F WILKINSBUBG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
BLADE.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN Gmson, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Invention in Blades, (which is a division of application serially numbered 87 9,7 54, filed December 30,1914L,) of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention relates to blades and has for an object to produce a blade having a new and improved shrouding member formed thereon. i g
A further object is to produce a blade having a combined spacing and shrouding member-and a shroud engaging tip formed integrally therewith.
A further object is to produce a blade which is provided witha shrouding member formed from a part blade.
These and other objects, which will be made apparent throughout the further description of my invention, .are attained by means of the blade herein described and v illustrated in the single sheet of drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof.
. In the drawings Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 are perspective views of a blade in various stages of completion, the finished blade being shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a fragmental sectional view of the rotor element of a turbine or similar apparatus equipped withblades embodying my invention.
The blade illustrated is provided wane mounting portion such as a shank 5, a cen* tral portlon or blade proper 6, a shrouding member 7, and a shroud engaging tip 8 i outer ends ofthe bladeare first severed andformed onthe outer end of the blade proper. This blade is preferabl formed as shown in the first four figures, t e original blank be ing made by either forging, drawing, or cast- 5 mg. As shown in Fig. 1,. the wings of the bent Hat. The flattened portion is then milled'so as to form the shrouding member 7 and the shroud engaging tip. 8. The shrouding member 7 is then bent over and punched as shown soas to form a recess 9 for engaging the rear part of the shroudingmember of an adjacent blade, as shown in V Specification ofQLetters Patent.
of the outer end of the Patented Den. a, rail a.
Fig. 5, and a tongue 10 for engaging the recess of the ad acent shrouding member on the opposite side of the blade. A hole llis also punched in the shrouding member 7,
into which the shroud engaging tip 8 of the adjacent blade fits.
Flg. 5 illustrates the manner in which the blades fit together. Because of the interlocking of the tongues 10 in the recesses 9 and the tlps 8 in the holes 11 the blades may be accurately and quickly assembled in proper allnement. The tips 8 are then riv eted over thereby locking the blades together In Fig. 6, I have illustrated blades having inclined "shrouding' members for the purpose of providing fluid passages of gradually increasing area through the blades.
These blades are preferably formed by severing the blanks at an angle instead at at right angles, as shown in Fig. 1. The parts offthese blades which corrcspdndto similar parts of the blade shown in Fig. 4 are deslgnated by similar numerals distinguished by prime marks.
While ll have described and illustrated several embodiments of my invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes, modifications, additions and omissions may be made in the apparatus illustrated without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth by the appended claims.
- What claimisz.
1. A blade formed of malleable material and having an integrally formed shroud member on the outer end thereof, said shroud member being flat and being pressed to a position substantially at right angles to the,
axis of the blade.
2. A blade having an integrally formed malleable shrouding member atone end thereof pressed into engagement with the adjacent ends of the wings of the blades.
3. A blade having a shrouding member formed of malleable material and located on the outer end thereof, said shrouding member being provided with areces's and tongue for causing adjacent-blades to interlock and form a continuous shroud, and being pressed to a position substantially at right angles to the blade. I
4. A-bladehaving a shroud en aging tip anda shrouding member integr'afi 5. Abhjde swing a shroud engaging tip and ashrouding memberintegrally formed y formed L on the outerend of the blade, said shrouding member having a hole therein for engaging the shroud en aging tip of an adjacent blade.
on the outer end of the blade, said shrouding member having a hole therein for engaging the shroud engagin tip of an adjacent blade and a tongue and recess for causing adjacent shrouding members to interlock.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 26th day of February 1917.
CHRISTIAN GILSON.
