BED.
Application filed May 7, 1917. Serial N 0. 166,883.'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRICK Joi-IN'soN,
a citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to beds for invalid and hospital use and the object of the inven- :tion is to provide a bed of such construction that the :patient can be raised or lowered bodily in the bed without inconvenience or discomfort, or the feet or the head can be raised or lowered.
A further object is to provide a bed in whichthe patient can be raised or lowered for the convenience of the nurse or'attendant-and in which access may be easily had to the underside of the bed.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a side elevation partially in section of a bed embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, showing the manner of hinging the sections of the bed and a device forfastening or strapping the-patient on the bed,
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, showing the means for locking the hinged sections or raising or lowering them together.
In the drawing, 2 represents the frame at the head of the bed and 8 a corresponding frame at the foot. These frames are preferably arched in form and have their cross bars 4 at the top connected by rods 5 which brace the head and foot of the bed and prevent them from swinging inwardly under the load of the patient. The upright posts of these frames are connected by side rails 6 which are preferably of angle bar, though any other material may be used, if preferred. 7 represents a frame at the head of the bed, hinged on standards 8, and 9 is a similar though longer frame, also hinged on said standards, and extending to the foot of the bed. These two frames form the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Cables 13 connect these shafts with the head and foot frame sections 7 and 9 and are adapted to be swung on the shafts for raising or lowering the frame sections to change the position of the'patient. Each shaft is provided with a ratchet device 14 and the end of the shaft has a'socket 15 to receive an operating crank. The cross bars 4 at the top of the end frames have straps 16 depending therefrom, provided with holes 17 therein, and links 18 and 19 are pivotally connected with the shafts 10 and the bearings 11 and are adjustable in the straps 16 by means of bolts 20. By loosening the clamps 12, the shafts may be raised or lowcred on the end frames and by revolving the shafts, the frame sections 7 and 9 may be tilted to raise or lower the head or feet of the patient. A cross bar 21 has its ends resting upon the side rails 6 of the bed and braces 22 connect this cross bar with the upper ends of the standards 8, the lower ends of which are mounted on said cross bar. The plates 23 are provided between the rails 6 and hooks 24 are mounted on said plates and adapted to engage pins 25 on the frames 7 and 9 and have the function of locking these frames in alinement with each other and holding them against upward 'or downward tilting on their pivotal connections with the standards 8. These hooks are used when it is desired to raise wardly, as indicated at 30, to form the pivot pins connecting the frames 7 and 9 with the standards 8. When the band 28 is in the position shown in Fig. 3, the opening in the filler will be entirely closed, but at any time it may be moved forward to allow the as may be desired.
nurse or attendant to obtain convenient access to the patient without the necessity of removing or disturbing the bed clothes.
The frame section is preferably provided with a broad belt device 31 which encircles the frame and may be carried across the bed for the purpose of preventing a delirious patient from rising. This belt is preferably provided with a locking device 32 on the underside of the bed frame for securing the ends of the belt together. I do not show this locking device in detail, as it may be made in various ways and its details of construction may be modified without materially altering the function of the device.
In using the bed, the attendant may raise or lower the head or feet of the patient by means of the windlass devices, or, whenever desired, the hinge connection between them may be locked and both supporting frames with the patient raised or lowered bodily,
In various ways the details of construction herein shown and described may be modified and still be within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with a bed having head and foot frames and side rails between them, of bearings slidably mounted on the upright posts of said head and foot frames, straps depending from the cross bars of said frames, links pivotally connected with said straps and with said bearings, shafts mounted in said bearings, each shaft having a ratchet device and a socket to receive an operating crank, cables wound on each end of said shafts, mattress supporting frames hinged at one end and connected respectively at their opposite ends to said cables, means supporting the pivotal connection of said mattress supporting frames on said bed frame and each mattress supporting frame being adjustable by the winding or unwinding of said cables for changing the angle of said frame with respect to the other frame.
2. A bed comprising end frames and side rails between them, head and foot frames arranged between said end frames and having a hinge connection between them, a cross bar having its ends supported by said side rails but unattached thereto, plates mounted transversely on said cross bar, standards mounted on said cross bar and having their upper ends concentric with the pivotal connection of said frames, and means connecting said plates upon opposite sides of said standards with said frames for locking them in alinement with each other, for the purpose specified.
3. A bed comprising end frames, side rails between them, head and foot frames pivotally connected at their abutting ends and supported between said end frames, a filler for said head and foot frames having an opening therein, a band for closing said opening, guide rods for said band, one on each side, one end of each rod forming the pivot pin of the abutting ends of the head and foot frames on its respective side.
4. A bed comprising head and foot frames having abutting ends and supporting standards at said ends, guide rods mounted in said foot frame and having outwardly turned forward ends passing through the abutting ends of said frames and'said standards and forming pivotal connections between them, said frames having a filler therein provided with an opening, and a band slidable on said rods for closing or exposingsaid openg A bed comprising end frames and side rails between them, head and foot frames arranged between said end frames and having a hinged connection between them, a support for said hinged connection on said side rails, plates mounted on said support and projecting in front and in the rear thereof and hooks connecting said plates with said head and foot frames on each side of the pivots thereoffor locking them in alinement.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of May 1917.
FREDRICK JOHNSON.
