Beit known that I, DAVID D. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification. y
The invention relates to door locks. The inventionv `is more particularly designed to provide a door-lock for voutswinging doors more particularly used for emergency exits. I
,The invention is further designed to pro- ,vide a simple and eiiicient door-lock mechanism in which the door is locked by catches, at the top and bottom which may be quickly and simultaneously released by a slight downward pressure upon the operating handle and provision is made for automatically locking the door without interference with the releasing mechanism.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

In general the device comprises upper and loulrpr locks and means for operating said loc s.
Each lock consists of a triangular-shaped casing 5 adapted to be secured to the upper or lower portions of the door 6 adjacent its opening side by any suitable means such as screws 7. A pin 8 is pivotally mounted near one angle of the casing and a latch 9 is provided with lugs 10 through which said pin 8 passes to pivotally secure said latch within the casing. This latch is formed from a plate and has an angled portion 11 from which a lug 12 extends into the casing. A coiled spring 13 mounted on the pin 8 has one end 14 engaging inside the casing and its other end 15 engaging inside the latch 9 tovv normally hold said latch outwardly. The
The means for operating the latches comprises means for releasing them from locking engagement with the keeper plates previously described. This comprises a casing 22 secured to the door where the usual doorl lock is located and provided with a pivot pin 23 upon which an operating lever 24 is pivotally mounted and further comprises means connected to said lever and both latches to release them on a. downward movement of said lever. A slotted link 25 is pivotally secured to the lug 12 of each latch by a pin 26 moving in said slot and is pivotally secured to a slidable block 27 to which a rod 28 is connected. The rod 28 for the upper latch is connected to a block 29 slidably mounted in the casin 22 and having an angled portion 30 whic is pivotally connected to the lever 24 above its point of pivotal connection with" the casing by a link 31. The rod 28 for the lower latch is connected to a block 32 slidably mounted in the casing 22 and pivotally connected to the lever 24 below its point of pivotal connection with the casing by a link 33. A spring 34 is mounted within the casing being secured at one end to the casing by apin 35 and at its other end to the angled portion 30 of the block 29. The outer end 36 of the lever 24 has a broad fiat face so that it may be readily pressed upon to release the latches.
With the construction above described when it is desired to release the latches 9 from locking engagement a downward pressure upon the outer end 36 of the lever 24 will through the links 31 and 33 cause the blocks 29 and 32 to move inwardly toward each other against the action of the spring 34 and thus cause the rods 28, blocks 27 and links 25 to move inwardly, thus moving the upper and lower latches inwardly out of locking engagement with the door jamb. On a release of the lever 24 the spring 34 moves the blocks 29 and 32 outwardly and the lever 24 upwardly and the springs 13 return the latches 9 to their upper position. f
In order that the door may be automatically locked when it is closed, the slotted links 25 provide for a lost motion connection between the latches 9 and the blocks 27 so that the latches 'may move inwardly when their inclined faces 37 engage the keeper plates until said latches. are positioned in line with the apertures in the keeper plates at which time the latch springs move said latches upwardly into locking engagement without the necessity Ao1 pressing the lever V24 downwardly. Of course it will be understood that solid links may be used instead of the slotted links 2 5 in which instance it would be necessary to move. the latches inwardly through the agency of the operating nechanism when it was desired to close the oor.
It will be noted that the distinctive kind oi' releasing lever 24 used will permit a release of the latches if pressed upon by anything and as these locks are particularly designed for use on exit doors for theaters,` factories and the like they will assure safety for in case of a panic a crowd pressing upon the Copies of this patent may be obtained-for door will open it if anyone strikes the lever 24.
The invention thus exemplifies a simple and ellicient orm of door-lock well adapted for the purposes described.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. In a door-lock, the combination of upper and lower latches, each latch comprising a casing and a spring pressed plate pivotally connected to said casing, a block slidably mounted in said casing, a slotted link pivotally connecting said block with said angled plate and means for releasing said latehes Comprising a vertically pivote@ lover and Connections above and below its pivot noi-ot and with Said sldablo blocks for moving YSaid latches inwardly ou the inward mov@- ment of said lever.
