Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
rncrnn DYNOWSKY, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
sHAvINe-BRusH. i
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, PETER 'DYNOWSKY, a subject of the Emperor-of Austria, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Shaving-Brushes,- of'which the following is a specification. p i
This invention'relates to improvements in shaving utensils and particularly tothe brushes used for lathering the face preliminary to using a razor.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a brush slidably contained within a holder, which acts as a handle therefor, the brush being automatically projected into position for use upon the removal of a cover. Another object is to provide a compartment in the brush for containing shaving soap in the form of a fine powder.
And a still further object is to provide means whereby the powder may be distributed among the bristles of the brush at any desired time and in a convenient and effective manner. I
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the center line of the brush and engaging parts.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the brush, the bristle elements being shown extended.
Fig, 3 is a side elevational view of the cover, parts being broken away in order to disclose the inner construction, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 10 designates the bristles of a shaving or a lather brush, the same being engaged at their rear ends within a holder or backing 11, provided at its ends with raised annular flanges 12, adapted to make sliding contact within the. container or handle 14. The handle is preferably of cylindrical construction and of suflicient length to entirely contain the bristles, as well as the backing or holder, which rests against the upper coil of a spring 15, the lower coil of which abuts the inner surface of the container bottom 16, so as to project the brush, as a unit, outward, and cause contact between the outer annular flange 12, and

an'inturned annular flanged edge 17, formed I at the top ofthe casing.
Surrounding the flange and extending downward from the casing, are screwthreads 18, by which is connected a cylindrical cover 20,-having a transverse partition plate 21, provided with a plurality of regularly spaced perforations 22, arranged in circular rows, theplatemaking contact with the outer surface of the flange 17, when the cover is screwed into operative position.
The-top of the cover 20, is also screwthreaded and has fitted to it the downturned edges 24 of a cap 25, thus forming a com partment 26 in the upper part of the cover, adapted to contain soap in a finely divided dry condition. I
This is accomplished by means of a screw 33, fixed in the edge of the circular plate 30, the head extending through a slot 3-1, formed in the cover 20, and in such manner that as the screw is-carried to one extremity of the slot the perforations are brought into alinement, while if the screw be moved to the opposite end of the slot, the solid portion of the plate 30 covers the perforations in the plate 21, and prevents soap from passing therethrough.
In operation, the parts having been assembled as shown in Fig. '1, the cover may be removed, whereupon the spring 15 projects the brush outwardly, permitting it to be moistened. and then reentered, the inner plate being moved so that the perforations are in alinement and properly manipulated so that the soap powder may be brought into contact with the moistened brush, whereupon the plate 30, is operated to close the perforations through the plate, the cover backing outwardly into operative position, a
compartmented cover screw-threadedto said casing and with which said bristles are adapted to make contact, a perforated plate fixed in said cover, a second plate rotatably engaged in said cover, said second plate being also perforated, means for bringing the perforations in said plates into alinement, and powdered soap contained in the compartment in said cover.
2. In a shaving brush, the combination with the bristle elements, and a holder therefor, a casing surrounding said bristle elements, means formed with said holder adapted to contact with the exterior of said casing whereby it may be moved longitudinally thereof, means for projecting said bristles outwardly, a conipartmented cover screwthreaded to said casing, powdered soap contained in the compartment of said cover, a cap thereover, a perforate plate formed with said cover in'nnediately adjacent to the bristles of said brush, a second perforate plate rotatably engaged With said compartinented cover, a screw set at the edge of said rotatable plate, and a slot formed in said cover through which said screw extends and whereby the perforations in said plate may be brought into position.
In testimony whereof, I have afiixed my signature.
PETER DYNOWSKY.
