Specification-of Letters Patent.
Application filed March-18, 1918. Serial-No. 228,152.
sweeping large areas with great rapidity and without agitating the dustfrom the refuse being collected, thereby renderlng; the device sanitary for employment 1n. thickly populated communities.
A still further ob]ect of the invention is to provide a street cleaning machine adapted for easily and quickly performingthe services of a large number oflaborers in sweeping a street in a dustless manner, the operation of sweeping and. collecting refuse being expeditiously accomplished by a single travelingjof the machine over the surface to be cleaned. Y V
In the drawings forming a part ofthis application and in which like numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views2 1' Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device;
Fig. 2is atopzplan view thereof;;-
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional,
view of the same taken upon line 3-3 of Fig. 4 is a detail vertical transverse sectional view taken upon line 44 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view showing the sweeping brush and its operating means in top plan with parts broken away;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken upon line 66 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 7 is a swtional .view of an operating hub portion of the device.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, my device is in the form of a vehicle having a platform 10 mounted upon rear wheels 11 and front wheels 12, the device being adapted to be drawn forwardly over the roadway 13 by attaching suitable draft means, not shown, to the tongue 14 of the vehicle, a
suitable driver seat 151 being--'forwardly positioned-upon the said'platform 10..
An axle 16 is secured to the rear; wheels 11 and journaled through; a bolsterLT carried beneaththe rear-portion of the plat: form 11 while a gear118 and sprocket-wheel 19 are secured upon. the said axle 16 adjacent its oppositeends and inwardly of the wheels 11. A casing 20' of inverted-Vshaped form in longitudinal section is carried, by the platform 10 having its forwardly in clined. p'ortion21 extending through thesaidplatformwith an. openend or mouth 22:sub?
stantially vertically positioned therebeneath and with its rearwardly. inclined portion, 23 entend ng rearwardly ofthe platform 10 with acloslng slide .24 at its open rear end or Patented July. so, 1e1 s.-'
outlet 25 adapted to be opened by means offa V lever 2.6.
An endless apron 27115 arranged within the bottomof theifront portion 21 of .the casing 20 for taking up the sweepings at a point adjacent the mouth22 and carrying the same upwardly in the casing portion 21 for depositing the sweepings in the rear portion 23 thereof. The apron. 27 or convey-er.- belt has anyoperating"shaft. 28 journaled through the lower front end of-the3casing portion 21 with a sprocket-wheel 129. upon each end of the shaft 28for accommodating sprocket ohains 30 running. over thewheels 29 and similar sprocket-wheelsz3l carriedby shafts-32 arranged above-the rear axle 16 provided with gears 33 in constant meshwith the axle-gears 18'. It will be understood-that the conveyer 27 will be operatedby this-mam ner ofpconnections between the shaft 28 and" the axle 16 so as to transfer to the collecting portion 23 of the casing 20 any sweepings which are placed upon the belt 27 during the forward travel of the machine.
Oppositely arranged brackets 34: are arranged beneath the platform 10 adjacent the opposite sides thereof and forwardly of the casing 20 having upright screws 35 freely extending through bottom openings 36 in the said brackets, the axle or spindle 37 of a sweeping'brush 38 being journaled in the lower ends of the said screws 35. Sprocket,
wheels 39 are threaded upon each of the screws 35, the said wheels being in the form of turn-nuts mounted upon the bottom or cross-piece 40 of each-of the brackets, an operating chain 41 being arranged over the said wheels 39.
A stub-shaft 42 is centrally positioned beneath the platform 10 having a sprocketwheel 43 positioned between the opposite plies of the chain 41 and in mesh with each of the same while a sprocket-wheel 44 arranged upon the stub-shaft 42 is operated by asprocket-chain 45 through the agency of a turn-post 46 so that the screws 35 may be rotated in either desired direction by turning the hand-wheel 47 with which the upper end of the post 46 is provided. In this manner, the brush 38 may be elevated or lowered at the will of the operator by turning the said hand-wheel 47 which it will be noted is located adjacent the driver seat 15 of the machine.' Sprocket-wheels 48 are secured at the opposite ends of the brush spindle 37 having sprocl-ret-chains 49 running thereover and also over the aforementioned sprocket-wheels 19 carried by the rearaxle 16. The forward travel of the machine is adapted in this manner to revolve the brush 38 for sweeping the roadway 13 and forcing the sweeping-s into the adjacently positioned open mouth 22 of the easing portion 21 and upon the endless conveyer 27. A scraper 50 in the form of a plate is carried by the upper forward edge of the casing portion 21v ad aptcd for contact by the brush 38 during the sweepingoperation to insure the passing of all of the sweepings into the casing mouth 22.
A tank 51 is mounted upon the platform 10 above the brush, 38 adapted for holding a suitable fluid to be sprinkled onto the surface to be operated upon by the brush 38, a suitable hollow plate 52 being arranged for this purpose transversely beneath the platform 10 with an elongated perforated nozzle 53 rearwardly inclined toward the surface of the roadbed 13 immediately in front of the brush 38. A controlling valve 54 for the fluid-dispensing plate 52 has an operating member 55 connected with a lever 56 positioned for actuation adjacent the driverseat 15. A suitable lid 57 is provided for the tank 51 and it will be understood that any form of fluid such as water or a germicide may be provided in the tank for use in sprinkling the roadbed 13 preventing dust from arising during the sweeping operation, thereby rendering the machine sanitary.
What I claim as new is 1. A street-cleaning device comprising a vehicle, arefuse-collecting casing carried by the vehicle, oppositely positioned brackets carried by the vehicle, a sprocket-wheel in each of said brackets, an upright screw in threaded engagement with each of said wheels, :1 brush j ournaled between the lower ends of said screws, operating means for the brush, a sprocket-chain arranged over the said wheels, a post forwardly positioned upon the vehicle, a stub-shaft positioned centrally of the vehicle between the plies of said sprocket-chain, operating connections between the said chain and stub-shaft, operating connections between. the said stub-shaft and post, and a hand-wheel upon the top of said post. I
2. A device of the class described comprising a vehicle having a platform, opposite brackets depending from the platform, a weeping brush arranged transverselybeneath the platform with its-spindle extending beneath said brackets, upright screws freely extending into said brackets with the spindle of the brush journaled in the lower ends of said screws, operating wheels for said screws threaded upon the screws and positioned upon the brackets whereby the brush is adapted to be supported in its vertical adjustable position, and operating 7 means for said wheels adapted for actuation from a point above the platform.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
KVILLIAM BRAJDOVICS.
