Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 19, 1918. Serial No. 223,255.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnno W. NANFELDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wheeled Toys; and 1 do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the acconrpanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in wheeled toys, and particularly to toys which are adapted to have power imparted to them by means of a string wound upon a drum, the object of the invention being a simple device whereby power may be readily and effectively applied; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a profile body 4 of any approved design. struck from a sheet of metal and including a figure 5 of a driver, and a figure 6 of any animal desired, the parts being suitably painted as the fancy of the maker dictates. The body 4 is formed with a longitudinal slot 7 the lower edge of which is formed with a flange 8 projecting outward and the end turned downward to form a bearing 9 for a transverse axle 10 which is provided with a wheel 11 outside the bearing 9, and with a wheel 19- at its opposite end. Preferably the wheel 11 will be slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the wheel 12. Extending across the slot 7 and so as to stand in a vertical position, is a fixed shaft 13 the lower end passing through the flange 8. This shaft is fixed to the body in any desired manner, herein shown by throwing out straps 14 and 15 beneath which the shaft passes and to which its ends may be secured by soldering or otherwise. Mounted on this shaft is a driving wheel 16 formed with a deep annular groove to provide a reel on which a cord 17 may be wound, one end of the cord being passed through a perforation 18 in the lower flange 19 of the driving wheel so as to hold the end of the cord, while it is being Patented June 25, mile.
wound upon the driving wheel. Mounted on the axle 10 is a driving disk 20of a diameter to engage with the lower face of the driving Wheel 16. Preferably and as herein shown, the figure 6 is provided at its lower edge with a weight 21 which is preferably a mass of solder applied to the lower edge of the figure, or may be heavy metal clamped thereto. Power is applied to the toy by winding the cord 17 around the driving wheel 16, then drawing the cord quickly so as to impart rotative movement to the driv ing wheel. The toy is then placed on the ground and the driving wheel resting on the driving disk 20 turns that disk and propels the toy. This driving wheel is comparatively heavy, and being mounted at one side of the profile body tends to tip that body slightly so as to bring the wheel 11 in contact with the ground, and this wheel being slightly smaller than the driving disk, the toy will move in a circular path, and the weight 21 tends to keep the toy moving in a large circular path instead of revolving in a small circle as might be the case when the toy is first put into motion owing to the rapid revolution of the heavy driving wheel.

A wheeled toy comprising a profile body representing a vehicle, driver and animal, the body formed with a longitudinal slot, a vertical shaft fixed to one side of the body and crossing said slot, a driving wheel loosely mounted on said shaft, an axle supported by said body, a driving disk mounted on said axle and engaged by said driving wheel, and wheels mounted on the ends of said axle, and a weight applied to the lower edge of the animal.
