Application filed September 21, 1917. Serial No. 192,528.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IssAo Love, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anchorage, Territory of Alaska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence posts and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a fence post of simple and durable structure having means for securely holding thesame in the ground and which may be readily removed therefrom in order that the post may be transported or transferred from one point to another. The post is further provided with simple and eflicient means for holding a fence fabric in position thereon.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the post;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the post looking at the same at a right angle from the view shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the post taken at 3-8 on Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a bar used on the post.
The post structure comprises a tubular body 1 which is flattened at its lower end and adapted to be driven or otherwise placed in the ground. An annular flange 2 is posi-' tioned upon the body 1 above the flattened portion thereof and adapted to rest upon the surface of the ground when the said body is placed in position therein. The body 1 is provided at its sides with vertically elongated openings 3 adapted to receive the end portions of braces hereinafter described. The body 1 is further provided in the vicinity of the flange 2 with a circular opening 4. A bar 5 is provided at its lower end with a tongue 6 which is adapted to enter the opening 4 whereby the lower portion of the said bar is held in position with relation to the body 1. The said bar 5 is curved transversely and is adapted to conform, approximately. with the exterior configuration of the body 1, and the said bar is provided at.
its side edges with notches 7 adapted to receive the line wires of the fence fabric and the said wires when in position lie between the bar 5 and the exterior of the body 1. The notches 7 engage the line wires of the fabric and prevent the fabric from slipping down or sagging along the body of the post. The bar 5 is provided at a point between its ends with an elongated opening 8 which is adapted to register with one of the openings 3 in the body 1. The upper portion of the bar 5 is held in position with relation to the body 1 by means of a sleeve 9 which is slipped over the upper portion of the body 1 and the top end of the said bar.
Tubular braces 10 are used in conjunction with the body portion 1 of the post and the said braces are provided at their upper ends with key shaped heads 11 which are adapted to be inserted through the opening 3 in the body and one through the opening 8 in the bar and when the braces are turned the branches of the key shaped heads are disposed transversely of the said openings and extend beyond the side edges thereof whereby the upper ends of the braces are secured in position with relation to the body 1. The braces 10 extend down from the body 1 and the bar 5 at acute angles and their upper ends bear against the same. Flukes 12 are pivotally connected with the lower ends of the braces 10 and are adapted to be driven into the ground and occupy positions approximately at right angles to the long dimensions of the said braces. By this arrangement it will be seen that when the parts are in position in the ground the body 1 is securely braced therein and may properly support a fence fabric. Also it will be seen that by withdrawing the flukes 12 from the ground and disconnecting the braces from the body and bar and by removing the sleeve 9 from the top end of the body the bar may be removed from the body whereby the fence fabric is released and then the body 1 may be withdrawn from the ground.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A fence post comprising a tubular body provided with elongated openings, a transversely curved bar having a tongue detachably inserted through one of said openings in the body and having an elongated opening registering with the other opening in the body. a brace having a key shaped head inserted through the registering openings of the body and bar and a fluke carried by the brace.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ISAAC LOVE.
