Description
C. P. KIMBALL.
Improvement in Buggy Bodies.
PATENT QEEICE.
CHARLES P. KIMBALL, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUGGV-BDlES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,817, dated April 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, CHARLES I. KIMBALL, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriages; and I herebyl declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same. reference being had to the accoml'ianying drawing, which is hereby made a part ot this specifica-tion, in Which Figure l shows a View of a carriage-body in perspective, with the motion of the lifting side indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of a carriage-body, with the lifting part of the side thrown quite up or forward. Fig shows an inside'yew of one side of a carriage-body to show the structure thereof. Fig. 4 is 4an edge view of acarriage-side, showing the manner of iitting the edge of the lifting Vor moving part ofthe side into the fixed part ofthe saine.
Same letters show like parts.
Myinvention relates to that kind of vehicle called boX-buggies, or to any vehicle where the sides extend all 'around the body of the vehicle,s'o a's to form a box or inclosed space for the occupants, the seat, &c. The comfort and beauty otl the carriage'is somewhat counteracted by a single inconveniencein their use. l refer to the necessity of being obliged to step over the somewhat high sides, both when entering and stepping out ofthe carriage. On the other hand', it' the sides in front of the seat were left off, and nothing but the. carriagebody constructed between the seat and the dash'er, the character of the vehicle would be changed, and its usefulness and comfort for many purposes diminished. When, however, the sides are carried all around the body of the vehicle, which is always the case in what is termed the box-buggy, the paint and varnish on the same soon become marred or scarred on the outside by reason of being frequently struck by thefeet of persons getting in and out. My invention consists in hinging or pivoting a partot' the sides in front of the seat, 0r the whole of such portion, so that the same can be turned up in a vertical plane when a person is entering or lea-ving the carriage, and then replaced when the need for its being lifted no longer exists. rlhis will clearly appear from the drawing.
A is the body; B, the lifting or turning portion of the sides; C, the hinge or pivot. b a shows the method of joining the edges of the two parts of the sides at c. D shows acurved guide, titting a slight notch or slot in the front end E to steady the motion of B, and aid in supporting it when in motion or turned up.
I am aware that attempts have been made to obviate the inconvenience of the sides ot' boX-buggies, but, owing to the direction and manner in which the movable part was turned, have proved useless.
On theinside, 'as at d, a spring-catch may be attached, to hold the `movable part B when shut down,'as in Fig. 1, and so made and arranged that an upward pull of the hand, grasp- :pin g a handle or finger-piece to raise the part Witnesses WM. HENRY CLIFFORD, D. W. SCRIENER.
