Be it known that I. GINJIRO YOSHIZAWA, a citizen of J apan, residing at San Francisco in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners,

of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fasteners, and more particularly to a fastening device especially adapted for securing packages and the like.

()ne of the main objects of theinvention is to provide a fastener of the character stated of simple construction and operation which may be produced at very small cost. A further object is to produce a fastening device which may be formed by bending from a single piece of wire and is so shaped as to tightly grip frictionally two or more layers or thicknesses of a wrapping medium so as to secure the same together. Further objects will appear from the detail description.

In constructing my fastener, I bend a piece of wire to form a downwardly extending pointed tongue or pin 1 the upper end of which is formed integral with a side bar 2, an end bar 3. a second side bar 4, and an upper arm 5, all of these members being integrally connected. The side bars 2 and 4. end bar 3, arm 5. and the short upper bar 6 which connects the upper end of. pin 1 and bar 2. form an approximately rectangular wire frame at the approximate center of which is the pin 1. The side and end bars of this frame are all positioned in approximately the same plane. The pin or point 1 is bent outward at an angle to the bar 6 for the greater portion of its length so that its outer face, 2". 6., the face of the pin adjacent bar 3. is in contact with bar 3. The side bar 2 and top bar 6 have sufficient resiliency to normally hold the pin in tight frictional enagement with the lower bar 3 so that an object inserted between the shank of the pin and the lower bar will be gripped tightly frictionally. The lower portion 1 of the pin below bar 3 is bent outward at an angle so asto bring the point 1 in alinement with Specification of Letters Patent.

the outer face of the bar, as in Fig. 2 of the drawings. By this means the lower portion of the pin shank is slightly o'dset so as to permit easy insertion of the pin through the material of the wrapping medium.

In Fig. 3 of the drawings, the packagerlt is wrapped so as to provide an overlapping tongue or flap B which extends downward over the end of the package. To secure the package in closed position, it is only neces sary to fasten this flap to the wrapping pa per, or other medium. which has previously been passed about the article to be wrapped. To accomplish this, the tongue 1 of the fastener may be forced outward slightly away from the bar 3 by grasping side bars 2. and 4t and exerting slight pressure on the tongue with the finger. and simultaneously inserting the lower portion 1 of the tongue through the flap B and beneath the wrapping medium under the flap. Pressing the tongue away from the lower bar 3 permits quick and easy insertion of the tongue through the flap and beneath the wrapping material thus enabling the fastener to be quickly and easily applied. When the pressure is re moved from tongue 1. the resiliency of arm 2 and bar 6 acts to force the tongue outward so as to tightly grip the flap B and the wrapping material beneath the same between the tongue and the bar. This results in securing the flap to the end of the package so as to effectually prevent accidental opening of the same.

As will be noted more clearly from Fig. 1 of the drawings. the upper bar 5 extends to approximately the center of bar 6. This upper bar acts to prevent the pin 1 from being forced upward when inserted into a package and acts in this manner to impart added rigidity to the pin, and to prevent distortion of bar 6.

A fastener constructed in accordance with my invention may be produced at very small cost so as to be available for use in stores and similar places of business. and is so constructed as to be suiiiciently rigid and strong to stand the use for which it is intended.

What I claim is:--

1. A. fastener formed from a continuous piece of wire bent to provide an approximately rectangular frame, a pin positioned at the approximate transverse center of said frame and extending beyond the same, said pin being normally held in tight frictional engagement with the lower bar of said frame and being directed below said bar at a forward angle to the frame, the upper end of said pin being integrally connected to the upper end of one of the side bars of said frame by a connecting bar, and a bar integral with the other side bar of said frame and overlapping said connecting bar.

2. A fastener formed from a continuous piece of wire bent to provide an approxi mately rectangular frame, and a pin normally held in tight frictional engagement with the lower bar of the frame and integrally connected at its upper end to the up- Copies of this patent may be obtained for per end of one of the'siole bars of the frame by a connecting bar, the end and side bars 15 in presence of two Witnesses.
