DRINKING-WEIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 22, rats.
Application filed May 16, 1917. Serial No. 168,962.
Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Dr1nk1ng-We1rs, of WlllCll the following is a specification, referonce being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to means-for regulating the volume of liquid to be drunk from a receptacle and is especially adapted for use by invalids and young children and may rightly be termed a drinking weir.
It is well known how awkward and many times disastrous are the first experiences of a child with a glass or cup of milk or other liquid, and to provide against such is one object of this invention.
Another object is to provide such a device whereby a glass, comparatively well filled with liquid, may be given an invalid in a reclining position with little or no danger of spilling the same and which may be drunk by the patient at his leisure with as little inconvenience as possible. I
Another object of the drinking weir is that of sanitation and good table manners taught to children, as liquid cannot be gulped from a receptacle equipped with the weir and the childs health consequently benefited.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the further description.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and in which like reference characters indicate like parts,
Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view of a drinking glass equipped with my improved weir.
Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the weir, and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a glass fitted with the device and tipped as for drinking {nu-poses to illustrate its operation.
' 1 represents a conoavo-convex rubber disk having an enlarged bead 2 formed about the rim thereof. This bead is to project both inwardly and outwardly be yond the wall of the disk.
In the outer projecting wall of the bead are formed notches 3, there being preferably three of them, and through one or possibly two of which the water oozes when the device is in active operation within a receptacle.
The inner projecting portion of the bead forms a convenient finger hold for withdrawing the weir from the receptacle, the general office of the bead apart from as above described, being that of strength and rigidity as required for the proper adjustment and stability of the device.
The side walls of an ordinary drinking glass converge slightly toward the bottom and the weir is of a diameter to snugly fit within the glass adjacent the upper rim thereof and for a tighter fit may be forced farther within the glass, as circumstances may require.
While I have shown the weir as constructed wholly of rubber and of a concavo-convex form, it is evident that the construction and shape may be considerably varied without departing from the invention.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
An article of manufacture, comprising a concavo-convex resilient disk having an enlarged. annular bead about the rim thereof and a plurality of passage-ways formed in the bead substantially parallel with the axis of the disk.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
