IMPROVEMENT lN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,695, dated March 19, 1872.

Specification describing certain Improvements in Washing Machines, invented by ED- WIN A. PARK, of Harpersfield, Ashtabula county, State of Ohio.

My invention relates t) improvements inv to the connection of the hooks used to hold the ends of the large fluted roller in placewith each other by means of a bar attached at its ends to the tops of the hooks. The objects of this part of my invention are to keep the hooks in a proper position, and to assist the operator in adjusting the pressure of the fluted roller upon the articles passing through the process of washing.

Fig. 3 represents a view of the top of the machine as viewed in looking downward upon the machine, the large iluted roller being removed. Fig. 4represents the facings in the slots of the standards. A is the base of the machine. a is an extension of the base A, adjustable, by a pin, 01", at d, through holes 0 c in the tongue b attached to the lower side of the base. e e are points for holding the machine in place while in use. B are standards, fastened to the base near its ends, having vertical slots h h, in which the journals of the fluted roller work. 0 is a large fluted roller, which has its bearings in the hooks F F, connected by the bar G, and is held in place by the springs E E, fastened to the base A. ff are journals of the fluted roller 0, passing through the slots h h in the standards B B, and having their bearings in the hooks F F. g is the crank ,by which the fluted roller is revolved. D D represent four small smooth rollers, which are hung between the standards and have their bearings in the same. They are placed around the under side of the large fluted roller in such'a manner that the peripheries of the rollers just come in contact with the periphery of the fluted roller when this is in its lowest position.

F F are hooks, connected at the bottom with spiral springs E E by tenons introduced into the upper ends of the spiral springs, and held in place either by means of a spiral groove around the periphery of the tenons corresponding to the form of the interior of the spiral spring, or in any other convenient manner; and connected at the tops of the hooks to the lower side of a bar, G, near its ends, by tenons i 'i at the upper end of each hook, by means of which connection with the bar the hooks are held in upright position,and the operator is enabled to rest upon the bar and press the large fluted roller down upon the articles during the process of washing.

The machine is adjusted in use to the tub with which it is used by adjusting the extension at of the base A to the inside diameter of the tub at the line of attachment of the ma chine, and placing the points of the base at the right hand in Fig. 1 against the interior side of the tub, and the points in the end of the extension (0 against the opposite side of the tub, a little lower than the line of attachment on the right side, andthen pressing the machine downward, and causing the extension ato fall into a line parallel with the base A, forcing the points into the sides of the tub, holding the machine firmly in place 5 and also pressing the machine a little further down, so that the machine shall rest upon the extension at a small angle with and below the base A, for the purpose of preventing the machine from rising out of position by use. The clothes are fed between the fluted and the four smooth rollers, and the crank turned, which draws the clothes between them, the fluted roller being held to its work by the spiral springs. The springs are assisted by pressure upon the bar G by the operator.
