Be it known that we,- EDwARD V. WUR'rs and loi-IN J. SwiNBANK, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, Pa., have made certain new and useful Improvements in Metal-Working Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a metal punching machine and more especially to machines for punching structural shapes in the process of fabrication. The objects and purposes of the invention will beset forth hereinafter in part and in part will be obvious herefrom, and are realized and accomplished through the combination and instrumentalities set out in the appended claims.
rlhe invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and forming a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description serve to illustrate the principles thereof.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrating by way of example one embodiment of the invention, means are provided for progressing or traveling the beam or shape through the machine and for successively stopping the shape relatively to the punchingA mechanism to locate the punched holes at the desired points or places in the beam. In such embodied form, the location of the punched holes longitudinally is effected or determined by the longitudinal travel and stopping of the beam,l and the transverse location of the holes, that is crosswise of the beam, is effected by traveling the punching mechanism to and fro across the beam.V
In` the embodied form, the means for longitudinally traveling and stoppingthe beam 09 comprises a substantially horizontally arranged series of rollers 1 upon which the beam is supported. Said rollers and the cooperating distance determining devices may be of thesame general form as is shown in copending application. Serial No. 824,386 filed March 13, 1914, and Ser. No. 814,380 filed; January 26, 1914. The distance determining devices of the kind mentioned, comprise a head 2 which engages the forward end ofthe beam .fr to permit or prevent travel of the beam by the rotation of rollers 1. The head 2 is attached to a rail or bar 3 extending horizontally backwardly alongside the beam a', said rail 3 being supported by a series of rollers 4. The rail 3 is connected to the distance dctermining device proper (not shown).
Referring more particularly to the punching devices, they are supported in a frame having its bed or base 10 of general rectangular form and extending across the path of travel of the beam. At either side said framel has upwardly extending supporting and guiding uprights 11, 12, 13 and rights is a supporting frame 9 for the punches adapted to bring the punches and dies to center irrespective of the size of the beam and of the consequent variations in the height of the web from the rollers 1. In accordance with certain features of the invention, the punches and the automatic centering means are mechanically operated, and in the embodied form said punch sup! porting frame has four vertically arranged members 15, 16, 17 and 18. In said upright 'members are formed vertical guideways intol which project vertically disposed guides 19, 20, 21 and 22 formed on the corresponding uprights 11, 12, 13 and 14 of the machine frame. lThe vertically disposed members `15 and 16 are connected across at the bottom by a cross piece 23, and the corresponding members 17 and 18 are connected across at the bottom by a cross piece 24. The upright members 15, 16, 17 and 18 at their upper ends are all connected `to acap piece 25 extending between and connected to all four of said vertically disposed members.
Thus the upright members 15, 16, 17 and 18, the bottom connecting pieces 23 'and 24,
and the cap piece or cross member 25 constitute a structure vertically movable to and fro vin the upright guides 19, 20, 21 and 22. vThe upward movement of these parts is limited by stops or yprojections 26 formed on the supporting and guiding uprights.
Journaled in the cross pieces 23 and 24 is a shaft 80. Within the cross pieces 23 and 24k said shaft has double crank arms 31 and 82, said double crank arms carrying therebetween a wrist pin or eccentric shaft 33. To rotate shaft 30, to one end of the shaft 30 exterior to the cross piece 23, is attached a fiexible driving connection (later described in detail) whereby said shaft is rotated irrespective of its up and `down movement with the punch and die frame 19.
lMea-ns for restoring the punch and die frame are provided, and as embodied there are within the upright frame members series of weights 85 and 36, preferablyin duplicate at either side of the machine. -Each set or series of weights, respectively, is sus-- pended by rods 37 or 38 from cross heads 39v or 40, said -weights acting or tending to move the slidable frame up to the stops 26 onv the frame uprights. The crossv heads 39 work on guides 41 and 42 at either side of the machine, and the cross heads 40 cor respondingly work on guides 43 and 44, formed on the respective machine frame uprights. Connected to the respective cross heads 39 and 40 are pivoted links 45 and 46. rlhe lower ends of the links 45 are pivotally connected to a lever 47atone side of l the machine, and likewise lat the other side of the machine. rIhe levers 47 lare pivoted, respectively, at 48 upon brackets 49 onthe machine frame. Likewise, the other ends of the links 46 are pivotally connected to a lever 50, fulcrumed at 51 rupon a lo'racl'et` 52 carried on the machine frame, and correspondingly at the other side of the fma chine. The other ends of the levers 47 and 50 are pivotally connected by links 53 to the cross pieces 23 and 24.

In the embodied form of means for providing the relative movement between the punches and dies to cause them to approach and recede from each other in the centering operation and the punching,operation, in addition to the movement of the punch carrying frame, the die carrier is vertically re` ciprocable to and` fro on said'frame and relatively ,to the punch carrier. In the embodied form of such means a cross member, yor die carrying cross head 64 is reciprocably mounted in pairs of corner guides 65 and 66 formed in the upright pieces 15, 16, 17 and 18. On the bottom of the cross head 64, and slidable toand fro in guides formed in the bottom of the head 64, are bearing blocks 67 and 68. Said blocks A67 and 68 are cylindrically recessed'upon the bottom side thereof to lbear upon the eccentric portion 33 of shaft 30, thus following the part 83 in its rotation, meanwhile sliding along the bottom of the cross member 64, and imparting only vertical motion thereto.
The manner of operation of the mechanism shown and described is substantially as follows:

Then the shape m is properly positioned, the shaft 30 is permitted to rotate, and the punch carrying frame is drawn downwardly and the die carrying cross member or head 64 is moved upwardly from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in. F 5. The transverse sliding movement between the lbearing blocks 67 and 68 and the cross head 64 permits the cross head 64 to move vertically whilev the bearing blocks 67V `1and 68 follow the 4eccentric crank or shaft its rotation. Thus the punches are broughtagainst onevside of the'web of they shape .fc and the die blocks against the other side of the web, irrespective of the height of the web from the topsl of the rollers 1. During this movement the rotation ofthe shaft 30 will draw the punch carrying frame downwardly, the levers 47 and 50 lifting the counterweights 35 and 3 correspondingly.v The flexible connection from shaft 30 to its rotating means permits of free movement of the punch carrying frame in the ycentering operation. When the punches and dies are brought firmly against the opposite sides of the web, the succeeding rotation of the shaft 30 and of the eccentric shaft 33 will drive the punches through the web.L As the part 33 passes over the upper extreme of its throw, and moves downwardly on the opposite side, the punches and dies will move apart, and the punch carrying frame will move upwardly,
Vby reason of the vcounterweights, until brought to rest against the stops 26. In they embodied form, the counterweights hold the punches up and also hold the gap between the punches and dies open to admit the shape. The weight of the punches and coperating parts, such as the supporting bar and movable frame and the unbalanced part of the shaft are slightly over-balanced by the counterweights., On rotation of the shaft the punches and the frame are drawn down, ythus liftingl the weights. Then the punches meet the web of the beam, the downward movement stops, and the pressure or purchase of the punches on the web makes a heel or fulcrum for lifting the floating shaft, the lower frame and the dies up to the shape. vWhen the dies meet the beam this upward' movement stops, and the punches and parts move downwardly again, punching'4 the holes. The counterweights assist the shaft in restoring all parts to initial position. There is thus provided a floating'punch and die carrier automatically centering itself for beams of different sizes and it is positively and mechanically driven to punch the work.
The embodied form of flexible drive for the shaft 30 comprises a flexible or universal joint between the shaft 30 and a shaft 71. rlhe shaft 71 has a universal joint 72 connecting with a shaft 78 journaled in a bearing 74.
Mounted on shaft 74 is a clutch member 7 5, which rotates with the shaft but is slidable thereon. Loose on shaft 73 is a gear wheel 76, said wheel being drivenl by a pinion 77 from a motor 78. The gear 76 has a clutch member 79 with which the clutch member is adapted to engage. A spring 80 impels clutch-member 7 5 .into engagement with clutch member 79.
Formed in the exterior of clutch member 7 5 is a cam groove 81, into which projects a camming and releasing finger 82, which may be spring pressed and operable in a suitable manner, as for instance manually, or 1t may Abe automatically operated from a distancelWhen the record sheet by a solenoid S3. linger 82 is retracted from the groove Slfit permits a single rotation of shaft 73 and thereby a rotation of shaft 30. Finger 82 moves back under the action of its spring into the wide portion of the slot or groove 81 to cam out the clutch member 75, and thus to stop the shaft 80 after a single rotation thereof until the pin82 is again retracted. Y l
1n the embodied form of means for traveling and positioning the punches and dies transversely or across the beam, the punch carrying block GO, which is mounted to slide along cross member 25, is connected by an arm 90 to a cross piece 91. Arm 90 is slidable along crosspiece 91 during the movement of the punch carrying frame. Connected4 to cross piece 91 at a central point is a screw threaded. shaft 92, or other suitable connection to a distance determining means such as an automatically operating, preliminarily settable distance record device, an example of which is shown in copending application Serial No. 814,380 filed January 26, 1914.
The amount and direction of rotation of the screw threaded shaft 92 will be determined by the distance determining device, which may be set or operated either by a keyboard or by a distance record sheet. T he shaft 92 and the head 2 thus coperate together to locate both .longitudinally and transversely a hole or group of holes in the shape, andthe same `distance record sheet may control' the degree of separation of the various holes` in a group, as will be later described.
,Mounted upon the cross head or member 64- is the die carrying block 93 which is slidable alongsaid member 64 and thus transversely to the shape as it is run through the machine. Said die block 98 has a bracket arm 94 likewise connected lto and vertically slidable on the crosspiece 91. The corresponding punch and die block are thus moved together to and fro across or transversely to the work.-
Means are provided in accordance with one feature of the invention for so traveling and positioning la plurality of punches and dies, transversely.adjusting and positioning one punch and its cooperating die with respect to another. punch and its coperating die to causeagreater or less separation of the rivet holes in a group. in addition to positioning the group ytransversely to the beam or shape.
1n kthe embodied form of such means, four punches and their cooperating dies are shown, two of said punches and their dies being carried in fixed position upon the corresponding punch carrier 60 and die carrier 93, the other two 'punchesvand their dies being movably mounted on the carriers 60l and 93 and relatively to the two first mentioned punches and dies transversely of the beam or shape x.
In the embodied form, a punch carrying block 96 is fixed to the head 60, having therein a punch, or rather two punches 97, which punches are provided respectively with shanks 98 and heads 99. Each of said punches. are fixed to a plate 100, against which works a spring 101. The corresponding die block 102 has dies 103 corresponding to thevpunch'es 97, the construction being the same. Mounted in the block 96 is' a shaft 104 fixed against longitudinal movement but free to rotate.l To the right of said block 96 (Fig. 8) shaft 104 has a screw t-hread 105 engaging an internal screw thread formed in a lug 106 on a punch block 107, which punch block is slidably mounted in the carrier 60. Said blockl 107 carries punches 108, which need not be described in detail, the construction being preferably the same as the corresponding parts already described, Each punch is provided with a gagging device, preferably electro-magnetically operated. As embodied, gags 136 are slidable into and out of operative relation with the corresponding punches 97 or 108. Fixed'to each gag is a rod 137 connectedy to the core of a solenoid 138,1which is impelled in the opposite direction from the action of the solenoid by` a spring 139.
The shaft 104 is mounted in a bearing 109 in the block or hea-c1160. Fixed to the end of t-he shaft 104 is a bevel gear 110 meshing with a corresponding bevel gear 111,v fixed to av vertical shaft 112 carried by a bracket 113 mounted on punch frame 9, a bracket 114 mounted on die frame 64, and a bracket 115 mounted on the machine frame.
A die block 116fhaving dies corresponding to the punches 108, is slidably lmounted upon the carrier 93. A shaft 117 is rotatably mounted in the die block 102, and has an exteriorly screw-threaded portion 118 en gaging an internal screw thready formed in the lug 119 upon a slidable die block 116. Shaft 117 is journaled at 120 on the die carrying member 93. Said shaft has a bevel gear 121 engaging a bevel gear 122 splined upon the shaft 112, A suitablesliding conn nection or sleeved joint (omitted from the drawing for the sake of clearness) may be formed' inthe shafts 104 and 117 to permit of the transverse travel and location, previously described, of the punches and dies by the distance determining device through shaft 92.
The embodied form of actuating means for the mechanism just described comprises automatic devices for controlling same from the stop vlug 131.
and indicated in'Fig. 13. The switch 143 represents in Fig. '13 the alternative regu'- lation for the punching and controlling de vices, whereby theyV are brought into action in proper timed relation with each other.
As embodied, shaft 112 has a bevel pinion 123 meshing with a bevelv gear 124, fixed upon a shaft 125. Fixed to sha-ft 125 isa gear 126, meshing with a pinion 1127 said pinion being driven by motor 128. Fixed to" shaft 125 is a disk 130 carrying a detent lug 131'. Surrounding shaft 125 is a ring` 132-, mounted on the machine frame, and having a plurality of apertures therein, in which apertures are reciprocably mount-ed stop pins 133 projectable into the path o f Said pins are controlled and operated by springs 135 and solenoids 134', said solenoids beingin circuits which are opened or closed by the distance record sheet 140. y i
The manner of operation of the mecha nisms'last described will, be understood from the foregoing without further detailed description, as will also the manner of fcooperation thereof with the mechanisms previously described.
From all the foregoing it will be understood that a machine has been provided realizing the objects and advantages hereinset forth, together wit-h other objects and advantages. It will also be understood that changes may be made from the particular form of mechanism shown 'and described within the scope of the accompanying claims, without departing' from the principles of the invention and without sacri cing its chief advantages. What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1.v A punching machine including in combination a punch carrying frame movable toward and from the work, a die carrying frame movable toward and from the work, a floating shaft having a single eccentric portion, the shaft and one of said frames moving together, and the other of said fraines'and the eccentric portion of said shaft moving together.

A punching machine including in combination a punch carrying frame movable toward and from the work, a die carrying frame movable toward and from the Work, a shaft having an eccentric portion, the shaft and one of said frames moving together, and the other of said frames and the eccentric portion of said shaft moving together, and means including an automatic distance determining device for traveling and stopping the shape relatively to the punching mechanism.`
5. A punching machineincluding in combination a punch carrying frame movable toward and from the Work, a die carrying frame movable tovvard and from the Work, a floating shaft having a single eccentric portion, the shaft and one of said frames moving together, and the other of said frames and the eccentric portion of said shaft moving together, and means for causing relative movement of the punch and the shape transversely of the shape to correctly position the punched holes transversely of the shape. f

A punching machine including in combination a punch carrying frame movable toward and from the Work, a die carrying frame movable toward and from the Work, a shaft having an eccentric portion, the shaft and one of said frames moving together, and the other of said frames and the eccentric portion of said shaft moving together and means,`including a distance record device, for causing relative movement of the punch and the-shape transversely` of the shape to correctly position the punched holes transversely of the shape.

14. A punching machine including in co1nbination a punch carrying frame movable toward and from the work, a die carrying frame movable toward and from the work, a
shaft having an eccentric portion, the shaft andione of said frames moving together, and
the other of said frames and the eccentric portion of said shaft movingr together, a pluralityv of punches carried by said punch carrying frame and a plurality of dies carried by said die carrying frame, and means including a distance record sheet and electrical connections therefrom for varying the position of the respective sets of punches and dies relatively to each other.
15. A punching machine including in combination a floating shaft having an eccentric portion, a punch carrying frame, a die carrying frame, one of Said. frames being carried to the work by the shaft and the other being carried to the work by the eccentric portion of the shaft.

A punching machine including in combination a floating shaft having an eccentric portion, a punch carrying frame, a die carrying frame, one of said frames being carried to the work by the shaft and the other being lcarried to the work by the eccentric portion of the shaft, rotating means, and a flexible connection therefrom to said shaft, means for traveling and stopping the shape relatively to the punching mechanism, said rotating means rotating said shaft while the shape is at rest.

A punching machine including in combination .a shaft having an eccentric portion, a punch carrying frame, a die carrying frame, one of said frames being carried to the work by the shaft and the other being carried to the Vwork by the eccentric portion of the shaft, and means operating automatically for traveling and stopping the shape relatively to the punching mechanism.

A punching machine including in combination a frame comprising two substantially parallel members and a cross member, a shaft ournaled in said parallel members away from said cross member and having an eccentric portion between said parallel members, a second cross member slidable on said parallel members to and from lsaid rst mentioned cross member, transversely slidable blocks between said second cross member and thev eccentric portion of said shaft, a punch carried on one of saidl cross members and a die carried on the other of said cross members.

A punching machine including in combination a frame comprising two substantially parallel members and a cross member, a shaft journaled in said parallel members away from said cross member and having an eccentric portion between said parallel members, a second cross member slidable on said parallel members to and from said first mentioned cross member and moved by said eccentric portion of said shaft, a punch carried by one of said cross members and a die by the other of said cross members, and means for traveling said punch and die together along said cross members.

A punching machine including in combination a frame comprising two substantially parallel members and a cross member, a shaft journaled in said parallel members away from said cross members and having an eccentric portion between said parallel members, a second cross member slidable on said parallel members to and from said first mentioned cross member and moved by said eccentric portion of said shaft, a plurality of punches carried by one of said cross members, a plurality of dies carried by the other of said cross members, and means for varying the distance between the various sets of punches and dies.
50. -A punching machine including in combination a frame comprising two substantially parallel members and a cross member, a shaft journaled in said parallel members away from said cross members, a shaft journaled in said parallel members away r'from said cross members and having an eccentric portion between said parallel members, a second cross member slidabler on said parallel members to and from said first mentioned cross member, a plurality of punches carried by one of said cross members, a plurality of dies carried by the other of said cross members, and means for varying the distance between the various sets'of punches and dies, and means for moving said plurality of punches and dies together along said cross members.

A punching machine including in combination a fra'me comprising two substantially parallel members and a cross member, a shaft journaled in said parallel 'vmembers away from said cross members and having an eccentric portion between said parallel members, a second cross member slidable on said parallel members to and from said first 'mentioned cross member and moved by said eccentric portion of said shaft, a plurality of punches carried by one of said cross members, a plurality of dies carried by the other of said cross members, and means including a distance determining device for varying the distance between the various sets of punches and dies and means including a distance determining device for moving said plurality of punches and dies together along said cross members.

A punching machine including in combination vertical guiding members, a frame comprising substantially parallel members vertically slidable on said guiding members, a shaft journaled in said parallel members away from said cross member and having an eccentric portion between said parallel members, a second cross member slidable on said parallel members to and from said first Lmentioned member and moved by said eccentric portion of said shaft, a punch carried by one of said cross members and a die by the other of said cross members.

A punching machine including in combination vertical guiding members, a frame comprising substantially parallel members vertically slidable on said guiding members, a shaft journaled in said parallel members away from said cross member and having an eccentric portion between said parallel members, al second cross member slidable on said parallel members to and from said first mentioned cross member, slidable blocks between said second cross member .and the eccentric portion of' saidE shaft, a punch carried on one of saidv cross members and a die carried on the other of said cross members.
