Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 12, 1914. Serial No. 818,347.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN BALTES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarm Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to looks, which have incorporated therein a burglar alarm device so arranged that the lock may be actuated by the use of a key on the outside, or by the knob on the inside, but if tampered with by persons of malicious intent the effect of withdrawing the bolt by forcible means will be to actuate an alarm thereby giving warning to the proper parties that the lock is being tampered with.
Referring to the drawings annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification:Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of a lock constructed according to my invention, with the bottom plate removed and showing the device in the set position. Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the lock shown in Fig. 1 but showing the lock in the opened position. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevational taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the casing 1 is suitably secured tothe base plate 2' which is screwed or otherwise fastened to the door 3 and carries a key engaging member 4 extending through the door 3. The casing 1 also carries a. knob 55, said knob or a key inserted in the key engaging member 4 being adapted to actuate a disk member 6 carrying the extending lugs 7 and 8 respectively, said lugs being adapted to actuate the locking bolt and also to engage the spring 30. The casing 1 has mounted therein a sliding bolt 9 suitably actuated by means of the springs 10 carried on the legs 11 thereof, the said legs being guided in the partition 12 carried by the casing 1. The casing 1 has pivotally mounted thereon a lever 13 secured by the pin 14 mounted in the casing 1, the lever 13 carrying at the inner end two lugs 13 adapted to receive therebetween the lugs 7 of the disk 6 which also engage under the edge of one of the heads 15 of the legs 11 carrying the bolt 9 and serving, when the knob 5 or key is turned, to draw the bolt 9 and move the lever 13. Between the lever 13 and the casing 1 is mounted a second lever 16 having at one end a hook 17 and at the other end a slot 18, said slot engaging a pin 19 carried by the lever 13 so that when the knob or key is turned the lug 7 will engage with the bolt 9 and lever 13 thereby drawing the bolt 9 and, at the same time, moving the lever 13 which in turn actuates the hook l7 swinging it out of its normal position.
Mounted on the door post and adapted to receive the bolt 9 and hook 17 is a casing 20, forming a socket for the bolt. lVithin the casing or socket 20 is mounted the insulating material 21 which carries thereon the space terminal poles 22 and 23, respectively, the pole 22 carrying an arm 2% having a sleeve 25 fitting thereon and is adapted to be stretched toward the pole 23 by means of the spring 26 carried thereby. The two poles 22 and 23 are connected in circuit with a bell or other device adapted to give an alarm, but not illustrated in the drawing.
Mounted within the socket 20, on the side wall thereof, is the sliding member 27 engaging the guiding pin 28, said sliding member 27 carrying at one end an offset arm 29 adapted to be interposed between the end of the sleeve 25 and the pole 23 to prevent electrical connection therebetween when the various parts of the lock are in the position shown in Fig. 1, this being the position in which the bolt is set or locked. The sliding member 27 carries at its upper end a projecting arm 31 adapted to be engaged by the hook member 17 when the various parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1. It will be seen that if the knob or the key engaging member are turned the bolt will be witl drawn and the hook 17 would engage the arm 31 if means were not provided by first moving it out from under the arm 31. However, when the knob or key is turned the lever 13 acts to swing the hook 17 out from under the arm 31 and allows the bolt and hook to be withdrawn into the casing 1 without disturbing the position of the sliding member 27. On the other hand, if persons with malicious intent attempt to actuate the bolt 9 by means of a screw driver or other means, the hook 17 will engage the arm 31 and draw the sliding member 27 out from between the two poles allowing the spring 26 to act and thrust the end of the sleeve 25 against the pole 23 thereby causing electrical connection and sounding an alarm.
It will be understood that various modifications from the precise construction and arrangement of parts illustrated and described herein may be resorted to in the practical construction of a lock according to my invention.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim is 1. The combination in an alarm lock, of a bolt, in combination with a socket, two electrical terminal poles in said socket and adapted to contact with each other, a sliding member in said socket and adapted to normally remain in set position, holding said terminal poles out of contact, and ahook member adapted when said bolt is forcibly released to draw said sliding member, thereby establishing an electrical connection between said terminal poles.
2. The combination in an alarm lock, of a bolt, in combination with a socket, two electrical poles in said socket insulated from said bolt and socket and adapted to contact with each other, a sliding member in said socket adapted to normally remain in a set position holding said terminal poles out of contact, a hook member adapted when said bolt is forcibly released to draw said sliding member thereby establishing an electrical connection between said terminal poles, and means for actuating said bolt from within or without, without establishing contact between said terminal poles.
3. The combination in an alarm lock, of a sliding bolt in combination with a socket, two electrical terminal poles in said socket and adapted to contact with each other, a sliding member in said socket and adapted to normally remain in a set position holding said terminal poles out of contact, a hook member adapted when said bolt is forcibly released to draw said sliding member thereby establishing an electrical connection between said terminal poles, and a revolving disk adapted to actuate said bolt member and said sliding member.
4. The combination in an alarm lock, of a bolt in combination with a socket, two electrical poles in said socket and adapted to contact with each other, a sliding member in said socket and adapted to normally re main in a set position holding said terminal poles out of contact, a hook member adapted when said bolt is forcibly released to draw said sliding member thereby establishing an electrical connection between said terminal poles, a revolving disk adapted to actuate said bolt and sliding member, and means for revolving said disk from within or without, without establishing contact between said poles.
5. The combination in an alarm lock, of a sliding bolt in combination with a socket, two electrical terminal poles in said socket and adapted to contact with each other, a sliding member in said socket adapted to normally remain in a'set position holding said terminal poles out of contact, a toggle member having a hook at one end thereof adapted when said bolt is forcibly released to draw said sliding member thereby establishing an electrical connection between said terminal poles, a revolving disk adapted to actuate said poles, and means for actuating said disk and bolt from within or without, without establishing electrical contact between said poles.
