scription, attention being called to the drawing which accompanies this application and forms a part thereof.
This invention concerns means which operate in conjunction with a look by co-acting with the locking medium or bolt of the same so that, when engaged by saidbolt, the door which carries the lock is held 1n closed position. These means known as lockstrikes or keepers, are attached in station ary position adjacent the free edge of a door and located so as to be capable of co-aeting in the desired manner with the lock carried by said door.
The improved keeper which constitutes the subject of this invention is intended more particularly for looks applied to doors used in places where the maintenance of a tight closure is very essential and where conditions exist which may interfere with a permanent fit of the doors. Doors used for refrigerators, cold storage rooms, etc., are subject to such conditions these condi tions being the influence of changing temperatures which cause the wood to swell, shrink, warp, etc. Doors or parts of build ing adjacent the doors also settle sometimes so that the looks or fasteners carried by such doors do not always meet their complementary keeper in the required manner and so as to effect a proper engagement for the purpose of closely seating the door. To overcome this defect, I have provided a keeper which is adjustable so that any changed conditions of the door which alter the relation of the lock with reference to the keeper may be met by adjustment of this latter so that a proper closure of the door is nevertheless attainable.
The invention consists of the construction as hereinafter described and claimed and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. 3. is a horizontal section of it, taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1. is a section taken on line 11 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5. is a front-view similar to Fig. 1, shows a modified form of construction. Fig. 6. is a side elevation partly in section of this modified form, similar to Fig. 2.
Inthe drawing, numeral 9 indicates a portion of a door near the free edge thereof.
Numeral 10 indicates part of a wall which contains the opening to which this door is fitted.
11 indicates the jamb against which the door at its free edge seats.
12 indicates the locking-member of any suitable looking or door-fastening device of which 13 is the housing. 14: is the keeper which operates in conjunction with this locking-member.
WVhen the parts are fitted to meet as shown in Fig. 3, a proper closure of the door is effected. In order to permit correction of any disturbance of this normal condition, due to shrinkage, warping, settling, etc, the position of the keeper is rendered adjustable for which purpose it forms an integrally connected part of a shank 15, from which it laterally projects and which shank is adjustably carried in a housing 16 to which it is slidably fitted. Reference is now had more particularly to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and l. The base 17 of this housing is extended to forma flange 18 for attachment of said housing with the keeper to wall 10. The shank is screw-threaded and a nut 19 is mounted upon it which is fitted to closely occupy a recess 21 obtained by a lateral enlargement of housing 16 and adjacent to base 17. in an axial direction by reason of its confinement with recess 21. The nut may rotate however within recess 21 because, diametrically considered, this latter is large enough to permit such rotation. Shank 15 cannot rotate with the nut because keeper 1 1 projects laterally through a slot 22 in housing '16. By reason of these conditions, the position of keeper 1 1 is rendered adjustable with reference to locking member 12, adjustment being obtained by rotation of nut 19 in proper direction, to move the shank and with it the keeper in or out as required. Slot 22 in the housing extends parallel to the axis of the shank to permit this movement of the keeper. Access to the nut for the purpose of its rotation is rendered possible from the side nearest the edge of the door opening, where housing 16 is open as shown in Fig. 2. Manipulation of the nut may be had in any suitable manner and may be assisted by means'of openings 23 provided in the sides thereof.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, keeper 14 is carried on a bridge Zt which is mounted upon or forms part of two shanks 15. Two housings l6l6 are provided, one for each of these shanks and one base serves for attachment. A, nut 19 is mounted on each shank, each confinedin a recess 21, the construction and manipulation being substantially the same as described for the single shank form, each nut being rotated to the same extent. A web 25 is provided between the two housings 16 to strengthen the structure. A recess 26 is provided in wall 10 behind base 17 into which the free ends of shanks 15 extend and within which they may move during. adjustment.
' It will be observed that nuts 19 are not accessible when the door is closed, so that, when security is an essential point, and the locking member is key-controlled, no tampering with the keeper is possible.
Having described my invention, I claim as new:
1. A lock keeper, a shank of which it forms a part and from which it laterally projects, a housing to which this shank is slidably fitted and which is provided with a slot in its side to admit the keeper, said slot extending parallel to the axis of the shank to permit the keeper to move the shank with reference to the housing.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination of an attaching flange, a substantially tubular housing projecting outwardly,;t'rom this flange and provided with an annular enlargement which contains a laterally open recess adjacent the attaching flange and between this flange and the outer portion of the housing, the opening in said recess being opposite the lock 1n connection with which the device is used, a screw threaded shank occupying this housing with a sliding fit and a nut mounted within this recess upon the screw-threaded portion of the shank for rotation thereon but confined within this recess against movement in axial direction.
