Specification of Letters Patent 1\T0 11,187, dated J une 27, 1854.-.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, W. E. WOODBRIDGE,
of Perth Amboy, in the'county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a y new and useful Improvement in Tops; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full andexact description of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in i attaching to a top, a Whistle or other instrument capable of producing a musical` sound in such a way that it shall be caused toproduce such sound by a current of-air:
` set in motion by its centrifugalforce.
To enable others skilled in the art to make anduse my invention, I proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the drawings annexed.
Figures 1 and 2 present sections atA rightangles to each other through theJ axis of one of these tops.
The same letters refer to the same parts in both figures.
A represents the body of this top which is of the form of the common peg top and has grooves a, a, to receive the cord for spinning it.
A hole B, B, is made through the top at right-angles to its axis in its greatest diameter; and this is made to communicate with an opening, C, in theline of its axis, in which the whistle is placed. The whistle is composed of two metallic disks shown in section at c and CZ having openings through their centers, and inserted, as represented, in the top. f
When the top is spun` the air contained in the hole B B will bethrown outward by its centrifugal force and a supply entering through the opening C the whistle is made to produce its sound.
I also propose to use in the place of the whistle a reed or any other suitable instrument for causing a current of air to produce a musical sound, and also to insert such instruments in any part of the current of air produced as above stated.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isf The attachment substantially as herein set forth, of a whistle or other instrument capable of producing a musical sound without regard to the particular form of the top or the mode in which it is set in motion.
