LOUIS A. SCHLESINGER, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
TROUSERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 6, 1914.
Application filed October 13, 1913. Serial No. 794,952.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Louis A. SOHLESIN- can, citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to garments or wearing apparel and more particularly to trousers, the primary object of the same being to provide trousers of improved construction and convertible for use with or without suspenders or other suspending means, the same consisting in certain structural characteristics whereby the above end is successfully attained without necessitating any material alterations or additions to the ordinary garment of this character.
My invention in its more specific aspect contemplates the provision of a belt or band, sewed or otherwise secured at its edges to the upper edge and the inside of the trousers body, and provided with a tongue to lapacross the opening of the trousers, said band being of the same or different material than that of the trousers, the upper edge of the trousers being adapted to be turned outwardly to expose said band to view and to constrict the upper edge of the trousers body so that it will bind closely around the waist, said band when exposed having the appearance of a belt.
My invention has for still another of its objects to provide trousers which may be easily and quickly converted for use either with or without the suspenders, the suspender buttons or other fastening means in the latter use of the trousers being entirely hidden from view, the invention as a whole being of such simplicity that the same will not appreciably add to the cost of tailoring the trousers.
With the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following de scription and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of trousers looking from the rear and show ing the same in condition for use in connection with the suspenders. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the band upon the upper edge of the trousers turned outwardly and downwardly; to expose the same to view and permit the trousers to be worn without the use of suspenders; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates a pair of trousers which are provided with the fly opening 6 in the usual manner. At the upper edge of the trousers in the back or rear thereof, a V shaped cut or opening 7 is provided across which the strap 8 extends, one end of said strap being sewed or otherwise secured to the trousers at one side of said cut. The other end of said strap is adjustably connected to the trousers on the opposite side of the cut through the medium of a suitable buckle indicated at 9.
The upper edge of the trousers body is provided with the usual seam 10 and to the inner side of this upper edge, a strap of material or band 11 is sewed. A binding strip of braid indicated at 12 is secured to the upper edge of the trousers and the band and provides a finish therefor. One end of the band 11 is extended beyond the edge of the fly opening 6 to provide a tongue 13, and this tongue and the inner side of the trousers on the opposite side of the opening 6 are provided with suitable fastening means 1 1. It will be observed that the tongue 13 is slightly curved upwardly in the condition of the trousers illustrated in Fig. l, and buttons or other suitable fasteners indicated at 15 are sewed upon the trousers adjacent their upper edge for the connection of the suspender straps thereto.
hen it is desired to dispense with the use of the suspenders, the upper edge of the trousers together with the band 1 1 is turned outwardly and downwardly to expose said band. The tongue 13 will then curve downward and represent the end of an ordinary trousers belt. By turning down the upper edge of the trousers body, the same are shortened and also circumferentially constricted so that the upper edge of the trousers will bind around the wearers waist but without undue pressure thereon. The trousers will thus be properly held in position and prevented from slipping or falling downwardly. The material of which the band 11 is formed is preferably, though not necessarily, of a different pattern from that of the trousers body, so that the illusion of a separate belt will be further enhanced.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of use of my invention will be apparent. it will be understood that the primary purpose of the invention is to provide simple, eiiicient and re liable means whereby the trousers may be properly supported Without necessitating the use of a belt, and this purpose may be accomplished irrespective of the particular manner of tailoring the garment other than in the structural features abore related, and the appended claim are to be construed without in any wise limiting the application of my invention in this respect. l further desire it to be understood that the tongue 13 may be fastened at its end to the garment proper by any desirable means or adj ustably connected thereto if deemed expedient. It will be appreciated that I have produced a garment which will be highly satisfactory and convenient in practical use and admits of the easy and quick conversion of the garment for either of the several modes of suspension hereinbefore referred to. its the band 11 is equivalent to the lining provided in the ordinary trousers, it will be seen that I have introduced no additional element or elements in the garment structure, thereby entirely avoiding additional expense in its tailoring.
flopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the While it have above described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the particular practical embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that in its specific structural features, the invention is susceptible of various minor alterations without departing from its essential features or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is:
The combination with the trousers provided with a fly opening, of a band secured to the inner side of the trousers body at its upper edge and having a tongue formed on one end projecting beyond the edge of the fly opening, means for detachably fastening said tongue to the trousers body beyond the opposite edge of the liy opening, binding braid stitched to the upper edge of the trousers body and the band, said body being provided with a seam at the lower edge of i the band, suspender fastening means secured to the exterior of the trousers body adjacent its upper edge, said upper edge of the trousers body and the band being adapted to be turned outwardly and downwardly to expose the band to View whereby the same has the appearance of a belt.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. LOUIS A. SCI-ILESINGER. lVitnesses M. C. LYDDANE, D. W. GALL.
