ATTACHABLE SUPPORT FOR ELECTRIC LAMPS.

lie it known that I, Lun lVmL, a citizen of the l'nited States. residing at (leveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaehable Supports for Electric Lamps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention eelates to supports for elec tric lamps, and has for its main object to provide a simple and inexpensive device, which will support an ordinary electric lamp and may be readily attached to shelves. table tops. the head of a bed. and the like. for holding the lamp in a convenient position for obtaining the best light.

This portable electric lamp is especially designed for travelers. It is compact so that it will occupy but little space in a grip or trunk. and although it has a strong clamping action for securely holding it to anobject. comparatively slight effort is required to make the attachment.

\Vith the above and other objects in view as will be readily understood, the invention will be hereinafter fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which simply illustrate the same, and the novel features thereof will be distinctly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings like characters of refer.- ence indicate corresponding parts.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my support holding an electric lamp and attached to a shelf. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, on an enlarged scale, of the support, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, the coiled spring being omitted, and Fig. 4: is a perspective view illustrating a modification of the support.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents an ordinary electric lamp which fits into and is carried by the usual socket 2. The socket is screwed onto a piece 3 having a central depending tongue 4, which is pivoted between the sides of a bifurcated head member 5. The piece 3 and the head member 5 form a. hinged joint, and a thumb-screw 6, which serves as a pivot therefor, is also adapted to hold the same in a suitable fixed position. The lower portion of the head member 5 is reduced, as shown at 7, and threaded to screw into the upper end of a tube 8. A collar 9 is preferably fixed to the upper end of said tube for strengthening the same, and between the upper end of the tube and the Specification of Letters Patent.

shoulder 10 of the shead member 5 is securely held a plate 11. which is adapted to be engaged by the. thumb of a person in operating the support to make an attachment or when removing it.

The opposite sides of the tube 8 are provided with longitudinal slots 12, and slidably mounted upon the tube is a clamping plate 3. which is similar to and cooperates with a base plate 14: securely fixed to the lower end of the tube. Said clamping plate and base plate extend a greater distance at one side of the tube. as at 15, and the inner sides thereof are preferably covered with felt or similar material. indicated at 16, for protection to the objects to which the support is attached. A plug 17 is preferably fitted into the lower open end of the tube 8 for stifi'ening the same. As willbe noted, especially in Figs. 2 and 3, the clamping plate 13 is cut out at 18 to receive the tube 8 and leave a pair of arms 19, which are adapted to slide in the slots 12, and also a pair of cross arms 20. The arms 19 prevent the clamping plate 13 from twisting or rotating on the tube, and together with the cross arms 20 serve as a seat, between which and the end of the head member 5 is interposed a suitable coiled spring 21, which tends to force the" clamping plate 13 toward the base plate. In order to force said clamping plate apart from the base plate and against the action of said coiled spring to attach or detach the support, the clamp ing plate is provided with a pair of projecting bars 22 having outwardly. extending ends 23, which are adapted to be engaged by the fingers while the thumb rests upon the plate 11. This gripping action of the thumb and fingers will easily force the clamping plate away from the base plate, and upon the person releasing his grip, the coiled spring 21 will force the clamping plate toward the base plate, and thereby fix the supportto an object such as represented by 24:. The support is easily detached by the same gripping action of the thumb and fingers. Sometimes it is convenientto hang the support from a nail, and alining aper tures, designated by 25, are provided in the clamping plate and base plate for this purpose.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4, thelamp socket 26 is fixed to a rod 27 having its other end rigidly connected to a disk 28. A similar clamping disk 29 is slidably moun upon the rod 27, and is preferably provided with a boss 30 for properly guiding the same thereon. The inner sides of said disks are provided with a protection covering31. A thumb rest 32 is fixed to the upper part of the rod, and between it and the clamping disk is interposed a coiled spring 33 for forcing the clamping disk toward the other disk.

A pair of finger bars 34 project from the clamping disk, and alining holes 35 are provided in said.disks, all for the same purpose as already described.

It is thought that the use and advantages of this device will be appreciated without further explanation, and it is to be understood that slight changes in the details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims.

Having fully described my invention, what I.claim is:

1. An attachable support for electric lamps, comprising a socket for holding a lamp, a supporting member for the socket, a base fixed to the supporting member, a clamping plate slidably mounted upon the supporting member, a spring tending to force the clamping plate toward the base, means carried by the supporting member adapted to be engaged by the thumb, and means projecting from the clamping plate adapted to be engaged by the fingers to exert a gripping action thereon to force the clamping' plate against the action of said spring, substantially as described.

2. An attachable support for electric lamps, comprising a socket for holding a lamp, a supporting member for the socket, a base'fixed to the supporting membena clamping plate slidably mounted upon the supporting member, a spring tending to force the clamping plate toward the base, a thumb plate carried by the supporting memher, and a pair of finger bars projecting from the clamping plate for drawing the clamping plate from the base, substantially as described.

3. An attachable support for electric lamps, comprisinga' socket for holding a lamp, a tube for supporting the socket, a base fixed to the tube, the tube being provided with slots, a clamping plate slidably mount-ed uponthe tube, the clamping plate having arms adapted to'slide in said slots, a coiledspring within the tube and engaging the arms of the clamping plate-tending to force it toward the base, means carried by the tube adapted to be engaged by the thumb, and means projecting from the clamping plate adapted to be engaged by the fingers to exert a gripping action thereon to force the clamping plate against the action of said spring, substantially as de scribed.

4. An attachable support for electric lamps, comprising a socket for holding a lamp, a piece for supporting the socket, a head member, a thumb screw for connecting said piece to said head member, a tube, a thumb rest, said head member being screwed into the tube. and securing the thumb rest to the end thereof, a base fixed to the tube, the tube being provided with slots, a clamping plate slidably mounted upon the tube, the clamping plate having arms adapted to slide in said slots, a coiled spring within the tube and engaging the arms of the clamping plate tending to force it toward the base, and a pair of finger bars projecting from the clamping plate for drawing the clamping plate from the base, substantially as described.
