RECORDING DEVICE.
Application filed June 30, 1915. Serial No. 37,187.
To all whom it may 0mm.- 1
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. GoonRUia,
a citizen of the United States, residing at count and trunk holding time used in v the study of trafiic conditions of a manual exchange by counting the switches as they complete connections, by the use of a meter on each trunk, and by counting all of the like trunking switches in operated position at any given time. This method of study is objectionable as the data obtained is in such form that considerable work is required before a comparison can be made of the results.
The object of the invention, therefore, is
the provision of a traffic recorder in which may be simultaneously recorded the various traffic conditions existing in an automatic telephone exchange, which results are available for comparison at any instant of time.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of atraflic recorder embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a chart showing graphically the traffic conditions existing in an automatic telephone exchange during a certain period of time.
A constantly driven roller 10 is provided, carrying a strip of paper or other recording medium, ruled in any desired manner. Guide rollers 11, positioned on either side of the roller 10, insure the proper feeding of the paper. The roller 10 is mounted on a shaft 12, to one end of which is fastened a gear 13 which meshes witha pinion 14 mounted on a shaft 15. Also mounted on the shaft 15 is an escapement wheel 16 which engages with an escapement mechanism 17. A shaft 18, mounted in operative relation to the shaft 12, has mounted thereon a ratchet 19, which engages with a pawl 20 pivotally mounted on one side of the S'peciflcationof Letters latent. Patented Aug. I:
. gear 13. A driving spring 21 is 'fastened one end to the shaft 18 and the other end to the frame (not shown) of the recorder. ,A
handle 22 is provided for tensioning the spring 21.
Pivotally mounted on a shaft 23, mounted parallel to the shaft 12, is a pluralityof levers 24, each individual to a switch or other device of which it is desiredto record the action. Each lever 24 carries at one end, and in operative relation to the roller- 10, a marking device 25. The other .end of 1 each lever 24 actsas an armature. for a-- magnet 26. At one side of the device is the marking device 25. Theother end of said member-'27 s connected to the plunger armature 29 of afcoil 30 and=Ito-' one end of a spring 31, theother end of the springa vertically pivoted member 27, carrying at one end a marking device 28 s milar in. character-to being fastened to a support 32. As many magnets 26 are provided asthere are switches or other devices whose per-.
formances are to be recorded, and these magnets are electrically connected tofthe switches and to the coil 30, as'shown by the,
conductors 34 and 35.
The operation is as follows: Assume that I the switches 33 are trunk switches ofan. au-
tomatic telephone exchange system, and that y it is desired to find out which trunkis busy, how long it is busy, and how often it is busy during any stated .period,.and that these results are to be arranged in the best possible form for-study, A sheet of prop erly ruled paper is placed on the. driving roll 10 the starting time, say 9.00 a.- m., being placed directly under the points of the marking devices 25 and 2S, and the roll started in motion, being driven at a constant rate of speed by the mechanism above described. The marking devices 25 are normally out of engagement with the paper, while the n'iarking device 28 is always in engagement with the same. When a trunk is seized for use, the switch 33 is closed, completing a circuit from battery, trunk switch 33, conductor 34, the associated magnet 26, conductor 35, coil 30 to ground. As a result of the completion of this circuit, magnet 26 is energized, attracting one end of its associated pivoted lever 24, and moving the marking device 25, on the other end, into onposition as long as the trunk is in use, and recording this fact on the paper. Also, coil 30 is energized, attracting the plunger armature 29 against the tension of the spring 31, and moving the marking device 28, on one end thereof, across the paper, a distance proportional to the amount of current passing through the coil 30. Should the trunk used complete its function before any other trunk is taken for use, the magnet 26 and coil 30 will be deenergized, resulting in the marking device 25 being removed from the paper, and the marking device 28 being returned to normal. Should, however, any other trunk or trunks be taken for use While the present trunk under discussion is still in .use, the magnet or magnets 26 individual thereto will be energized, moving the associated marking devices 25 into engagement with the paper and, each additional magnet 26 being energized in multiple with the first and with each succeeding magnet, allowing a proportionate increase in the amount of current flowing through the coil 30, resulting in the lateral movement of the marking device 28 over a number of the graduations as shown on Fig. 2, equal to the number of trunks in use simultaneously.
\Vhat is claimed is:
1. In a. traflic recording mechanism, devices of which it is desired to obtain a record of each individual and the total number of the said devices that are in operation at any instant of time, in combination with a recording medium, marking devices in contact therewith, means for operating said marking devices for recording each individual device and the total number of said firstnamed devices in use at any instant of time.
2. A recorder for obtaining a visual record of the performance of a plurality of trunks or switches of an automatic telephone system, the individual items of the record being arranged for instant comparison and study and comprising a constantly driven roller carrying a record medium, a plurality of marking devices each individual to a trunk or switch and each adapted to engage with the record medium but normally out of contact'therewith, a marking device common to the said plurality of marking devices and normally in engagement with the record medium, and electrically operated means for both kinds of marking devices.
3. In a traflic recording mechanism, devices the operation of which it is desired to obtain a record, in combination with a recording medium, a plurality of marking devices, adapted to contact therewith, means for moving said recording medium past said marking devices at a constant rate of s eed, means connected with the devices of WhlCh it is desired to obtain a record for moving said marking devices into engagement with said recording medium, a marking device constantly in engagement with said recordin medium and common to the plurality o marking devices, and means electrically connected to first-named devices for causing the recording by the last-named marking device of the number of such devices simultaneously in use at any instant of-time.
i. In a trafiic recording mechanism, devices of which it is desired to obtain the individual and collective record at any instant or for any stated period of time, in combination with paper or other like recording medium, a plurality of marking devices adapted to contact with said recording medium, means for moving said recording medium past said marking devices at a constant rate of speed, a marking device common to the firstmamed marking devices and constantly in engagement with said recording medium, and means electrically connected with the devices of which it is desired to obtain a record for moving said plurality of marking devices into engagement with the recording medium and the other markin device across the face of the recording me ium, whereby an individual and collective record of the number of devices employed, and the duration of such employment, is visually indicated on the recordin medium.
