HEFFLEY, OF DUNCANNON, PENNSYLVANIA.
PACKAGE-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4., 1916.
Application filed. May 15, 1915. Serial No. 28,458.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HnrrLnY, Sn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duncannon, in the county of Perry and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in package ties, and has for its primary object a simple and efficient construction of tie or fastener to which both ends of a cord or string may be very easily and expeditiously connected after the cord has been passed around the package to be tied, the parts being so arranged that the device may be very easily detached when not required for use without the necessity of untying any knots. And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
\Vith these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a package having my improved tie applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the tie detached and with parts broken away, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clamping bar employed.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in all of the views of the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a preferably flat and elongated plate 1 which is formed intermediate of its ends with inturnecl side flanges 2 that are co-extensive with each other and that preferably meet along the median line of the device, as best illustrated in Fig. 1. The device also embodies fastening members which, in the present embodiment of the invention, include two hooks, designated 3 and 4, respectively, the bills 5 of the hooks facing each other as clearly illus trated in the drawing. Preferably these hooks 3 and a comprise integral parts of the body portion of the fastening members which consists of a single piece of wire or the like, bent intermediate of its ends to form the two hooks, aconnecting bar 6, and terminals 7 which, in the present instance, extend parallel to the bar 6 and terminate in slightly spaced relation to each other, as best illustrated in Fig. 2. The fastening members also include clamping devices which are here shown as integral parts of a preferably wire bar 8 which is crimped near each end, as at 9, to form an arched clamping finger designed to spring up between the spaced members of the bills 5 of the hooks 3 and a, so as to clamp the ends or some other portion of a string or cord between them. The arched clamping fingers 9 are connected together as integral parts of the bar 8 by a longitudinally ex tending intermediate portion 10 extending between the connecting bar 6 and termie nals 7, and preferably this intermediate portion 10 is laterally crimped or bent at its middle, as indicated at 11, and projects into the space between the terminals 7 hereinbefore referred to.
It will, of course, be understood that the inturned flanges 2 at the side of the plate 1' extend over and into contact with the intermediate portion of the connecting bar 6 and the terminals 7 as well as the intervening portion 10 of the clamping device and the crimp or bend thereof, whereby all of the parts of the fastener are securely held together.
It is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the use of the plate 1, as the same may be dispensed with and other means provided for holding the parts in place, and it is further to be understood that while the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, various changes may be made in the construction, arrangements and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved package tie will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, the ends of the cord, after same has been passed around the package in the desired manner, are slipped between the bills of the hooks 3 and at and the intervening clamping fingers 9 that are formed by the arched portions of the clamping device or bar 8, whereby the cord or string will be securely held until it is desired to untie the package, whereupon either or both of the ends of the cord may be detached, and thus it will be seen that it is not necessary to untie any knots at all in order to entirely de tach the fastener from the cord.
lVhat I claim, is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a base plate formed with inturned side flanges, a body portion embodying hooks arranged in spaced relation to each other, and including a connecting bar and terminals arranged substantially parallel to the connecting bar and terminating in spaced relation to each other at their eX- tremities, a clamping device consisting of a bar extending longitudinally between said connecting bar and said terminals, and formed with arched portions designed to coact with the bills of the hooks and also formed at its middle with a lateral crimp disposed in the space between the extremities of said terminals, and a base plate formed with in't'urned side flanges, extending over the connecting bar, the terminals, and the interposed crimp, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a base plate formed intermediate of its ends with inturned side flanges, a body portion formed of a single length of wire bent to form hooks arranged in spaced relation to each other with their bills facing, a connecting bar and terminals arranged substantially parallel to the connecting bar and terminating in spaced relation to each other at their extremities, and a clamping device consisting of a bar extend-- ing longitudinally between said connecting bar and said terminals and formed near its ends with arched portions adapted to spring up into the bills of the hooks, and also formed at its middle with a lateral crimp disposed in the space between the extremities of said terminals.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
