FLUE-PROTECTOR FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
iasinsc.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 191 6.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR FALKENWALDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flue-Protectors for Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to flue protectors for steam boilers boilers especially adapted for use in force draft firing, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a sleeve to be connected to the ends of the flues and the boiler seat to protect the flues from burning out at the end and to also provide means for giving the heated gases a spiral course through the flues, thus burning all the gases from the fuel.
Another object of the invention is to provide an eyelet or sleeve adapted to be con nected by upsetting its inner edge against the inner side of the flue to protect the flue from burning out at its end, said eyelet being provided with an asbestos gasket, and an asbestos gasket surrounding the flue where it is connected to the boiler seat and said eyelet being provided with a spiral rib to direct the heated gases in a spiral course through the flue.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illus trated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a portion of one end of the flue and through a portion of the boiler seat and showing the protector made in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the protector eyelet or sleeve, Fig. 3 is a side view of the same, and Fig. l is a partial elevation of the asbestos gasket.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the boiler sheet and 2 is one of the fines shown broken away at one end. An
asbestos packing or gasket 3 surrounds the reduced end of the flue 2, and the latter .has a flanged or upset outer end 4. The flue at its end is slightly reduced in size thus pro- 7 viding a shoulder 5 inside the flue.
The protector comprises a cyllndrical portion or sleeve 6 having a sharpened or tapered inner edge 7. At the outer end, the eyelet is provided with a curved flange 8, the inner edge of which bears against the boiler sheet at 9, and serves to inclose an asbestos ring or gasket 10 which holds the protector spaced apart by a nonconducting substance from the end of the boiler flue 2 and thus prevents the burning up of the flue at the end. Extending spirally or at an angle to the cylindrical portion 6 of the eyelet is a series of ribs 11 which direct the heated gases in a spiral course as shown by the arrows 12 through the flue 2.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the flue protector 10 being spaced from the end of the flue by an asbestos washer, and also that an asbestos ring or gasket surrounds the end of the flue, the ends of said flue shall not readily burn. off. Moreover, the spiral ribs within the protector direct the gases in a spiral course through the flues and thus retard the movement of the gases through the flues to utilize all the heat units of the gases, thus saving fuel and preventing the deposit of sulfate of iron which is very destructive to the flue.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim.
hat is claimed is A flue protector for steam boilers includ ing a sleeve for insertion into one end of a boiler tube, the inner end of said sleeve being feathered for providing a curved inner surface at the inner end of the sleeve for deflecting fire upon passage through the sleeve and causing the same to hug the inner wall of a boiler tube, a plurality of circumferentially spaced spirally arranged ribs formed integrally upon said sleeve and positioned within the bore of the saiiie. the outer end of said sleeve being rolled to form a head for encompassing the outer end of a boiler tube, and an asbestos ring mounted within said bead for engagement with the end of a boiler tube.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR FALKENVALDE.
