UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFICE CHARLES VMAGIJBKITRTH, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EMELINE MAGERKUBTH, OE LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
PORTABLE METAL PLANING AND FINISHING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MAGER- KURTH, a citizen lof Peru, residing at/Los Angeles in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Metal rlaning and Finishing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in electrically operated port.- able metal planing and finishing machines suitable for finishing plane surfaces of metals and especially of brass castings though it is also adapted to operate on other material besides metal, such as wood or stone.
It is an object of my invention to construct a machine which may be moved by hand over the surface of the metal or other material to be operated on in the same manner as a flat iron is moved in every direction across the work supported on a stationary bench or work support.
Another object of the invention is to con struct a machine of the kind referred to which is compact, simple of construction, positive in its operation, and having novel means for adjusting the operating tool in relation to the work, whereby a greater or smaller portion of the su' 4ace is operated on and theI depth of the cut is regulated.
Another object of this invention is to provide a machine of the kind described having a tool rotatably mounted and driven by an electric motor and having adjustable bottom and side gage members controlling the operative surface of the tool. The machine is also provided with means for adjusting the distance with which the operating tools project between the adjustable bottom gage plates, whereby the amount of material to be planed or ground off may be controlled.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In thealrawings which form a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a side view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front end View with an auxiliary gage plate attached to the bottom thereof. Fig. 4 is a side view of the operating tool. Fig. 5 is an end view thereof. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view in perspective of a modified form of the 'operating sp'ecmtioii of Letters Patent.

frame l0 provided with ribs 11, as shown, to secure greater strength. It is made of sultableslze so as to be easily operated, being not much larger than an ordinary carpenters plane.. On the upper part of the posterlor end of the frame is a handle 12 and adjacent thereto is a motor 14 of any preferred construction with suitable electric connectlons. A pulley l5 mounted on the shaft of. the motor drives the countershaft 16 provided with pulley 17 by means of band 18 or any other suitable connection. Rigidly mounted on shaft 16 in any suitable manner 1s an emery wheel 19 which is positloned 1n an opening 20.somewhat larger than the emery wheel, as shown. The width of the emery Wheel is the same as that of the metal frame 10. Shaft 16 is supported atopposite sides of the emery wheel in. a pair of arms 21-22. The arms are pivoted at their ends, which are adjacent to the motor, to a bolt 23 passing transversely through the frame, and are provided at thelr centers with suitable roller bearings in which shaft 16 is journaled. The other ends of the arms` are formed with eyes through which a bolt 24 passes transversely l through the frame. This bolt is threaded at either end and provided with nuts 25.
The adjustment `is effected as follows: A rotatable vertical threaded bolt 26, provided with a thumb nut 27 at its upper end, and pivoted to the frame 10 at its lower end, is positioned in a vertical channel 26 in the frame. A slotted ear 27 engages the upper part of bolt 26 and allows for the slight oscillatory movement thereof, due to the arc of the circle which bolt 24 describes in its vertical movement.' This bolt 26 engages a threaded bore in the 'middle of bolt 24. By rotating bolt 26, bolt 24 will be vertically raised or lowered thereby adjusting the forward ends of arms 21 and 22 and the rotatable tool carried thereby in vertical relation. A slot 28 is provided in the frame allowing such vertical adjustment .and the eyes on the forward ends of arms 21 and 22 are made of a size sufficient to provide a good bearing surface against the frame on either side of the slot 28. By tightening nuts 25 the rotating tool will be securely `of a solid metal held in its adjusted verticall position. The
lower partv of the frame is provided with a pair of longitudinal slots 10 extending horizontally on opposite sides thereof, as'
shown in Fig. 7. A pair of bottom gage members consisting of open metal boxes 29 and 30 of rectilineal cross section are provided with inwardly extending flanges 45 at the upper end thereof which engage the longitudinal grooves referred to; The ends lof boxes 29--30 which are adjacent to the operating tool are cut away to conformto v the curvature thereof and are spaced therefrom. The anterior box 29 land the posterior box 30 extend from the front and rear, respectively, to the operating tool and are spaced from each other leaving a free space or slot 31V between them through which the operating tool extends. Inorder to retain the boxes in their adjusted position a screw l32 is countersunk on one side thereof and extends transverselyinto a porrespondlngly threaded socket 33. By tightening screw 32W the boxes or bottom gage members will be clamped in their adjusted position.
By turning bolt 26 the emery wheel may be made to extend through slot 31 and beyond the boxlike gage members29 and 3 0 for any desired distance and by longltudlnally adjusting the boxlike gage members 29-30 the length of the slot 31 may be val surface of such flange may be ground or planed simultaneously with the horizontal surface with my machine. For this purpose I have provided a pair of lateral gage plates A 35 and 36 which are slidably mounted on the face of the boxlike gage members 29-30 on opposite sides thereof, the bottom of said lateral gage plates being flush with the bottom of the boxlike gage members. Slotted vertical straps 37 extendin from the lateral gage plates and provide with screws 38 which engage a corresponding threaded bore in the frame, provide means for vertical adjustment thereof. If it is desired to operate on the vertical face of a flange as well as on the horizontal plane surface meeting said' vertical face, the lateral gageplate adjacent to the flange is vertically adjusted by means of the straps 37 and screws 38. The lateral bottom part of the emery wheel which is now exposed by reason of the vertical adjustment of the lateral gage plate, is now free to engage and operate on the vertical face of the flange while the periphery of the wheel en ages the horizontal plane of the casting.
he apparatus is also suitable to plane an edge of a casting or other material. In orl der to guide the apparatus along an edge a guide plate 39 in the shape of an angle iron is attached to the bottom of the lboxlike gage members by means of screw bolts 40 which engage corresponding threaded bores in the lateral gage members 36. The horizontal member of said guide plate is out away just below slot 31, forming a concave shaped depression 46, which permits the emery wheel 19 to extend through slot 31 below the bottom gage members without interfering with said guide plate. The lateral gage plates 35,
l36 have similar cut away portions adjacent to the emery wheel in order to provide a clearance space allowing the emery wheel to rotate without contacting .with said lateral ,guide plates.
I prefer to construct the emery Wheel with slots 41 cut across the operating surface at an angle, as shown in Figs. 4 5. The corners of the emery wheel adjacent to these slots are preferably rounded oif. The elficiency of the emery wheel is greatly increased by such construction.
It is obvious that any other rotatable tool suitable for operating on a plane surface of metal or like material may be substituted for the emery wheel. In Fig. 6 I have -shown a fragmentary view in perspective of another metal working rotatable tool. -On the periphery of the wheel cutting members 42 are detachably secured to the rim of said wheel in dove-tailed relation, as shown. These cutting members have sharp horizontal edges and are provided with vertical grooves on their frontal faces to facilitate their cutting action. These members can easily be removed and resharpened.
Operation: The motor will rotate the operating tool at a suitable speed, which for the emery wheel is 3500 revolutions per minute. The tool is vertically adjusted through theslot 31 by means of bolt 26. The length of this slot is controlled by the longitudinal adjustment of said' bottom gage members. The operator places one hand on the handle and the otherl on the top part of the forward end of the machine and moves the same over and across the plane surface tobe operated on. The operating tool will quickly remove the metal to the desired extent, the shavings of themetal being thrown and removed through the channel formed between 'the frame of the machine and the bottom gage members. The surface operated upon will be perfectly smooth and plane, due to the fact that the bottom gage members control the depth of the cut of the operating tool..
It is not necessary that the motor furnishlll tor, or any other source of ing power for operating the rotatintool be an integral part of the apparatus. he moower, may be mounted at any convenient p ace and power may be transmitted to the tool by means of belts and pulleys, carried on movable and pivoted arms, provided with a universal joint, which allows free movement of the planing and finishing machine across the work to be operated on. I have not shown such power transmission because they are no -part of my invention, though it is to be understood that my invention may be used in connection with such power transmission devices if desired.
I do not limit myself to the specific construction of my device as shown and described. Various changes within the spirit of my invention and the scope of the claims will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. For instance. itmay be desirable to Aconstruct the flanges 45 lof-'the box-shaped gage member 29 and the correspondingv grooves l0 in which said gage member is slidably mounted, at an angle extending from the rear upwardly tothe operating too This construction will effect that when the gage member is adjusted outwardly, not only will slot 46 be increased in length but gage member 30 will also be lowered a slight distance below the plane of the front gage member 29 but maintaining a parallel relation thereto. The rotating tool is lowered so that its operating surface at its lowest point is in horizontal alinement with gage member 29. Another advantage of this construction is that it will allow the operating tool to cut away the amount of material desired, leaving a perfectly plane surface, which could not be produced if the operating surface of the tool is lowered and extends through the slot 46 beyond the plane faces of the gage.
I claim:
