RIDING-SKIRT.

To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, PASQUALE NARDI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Riding-Skirt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved riding skirt arranged to insure a proper fit and perfect safety for riding on ladies side saddles and to prevent the habit from being caught on the pommel or other parts of the saddle in case the rider should fall or be thrown from her mount. This skirt is built especially for hunting in the fields. Often when taking a jump (say over a fence) the rider coming back misses her seat thus causing her skirt to get caught on the top pommel, but with this new invention, the rider is immediately freed and saved from a serious fall while hunting. In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a one-piece skirt having a body front or apron provided at the lower portion with side extensions for covering the legs and provided at the upper portions with flaps adapted to extend over the hips and back, and fastening devices having separable members arranged on the edges of the said flaps for detachably connecting the flaps with each other along the median line of the back of the skirt.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a view of the outer face of the skirt in open or extended position; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the inner face of the same; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the skirt as applied and with the parts fastened together for walking purposes; Fig. 4 is a similar view of the skirt with the parts in riding position and showing the opening of the skirt at the back when caught on the pommel; Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the lower portion of the skirt on the line 55 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a similar View of the back of the skirt, the section being on the line 66 of Fig. 3.

The front or apron of the body A is provided at the upper portion with flaps B, B adapted to extend over the hips and the back, and the upper edges of the front and the flaps B, B areprovided with a waistband C adapted to fit around the waist of the wearer. Along the edges of flaps B, B are arranged fastening devices D, D in the form of stud and socket members to detachably connect the flaps B and B with each other and to allow quick opening of the said fastening members in case the closed back of the skirt should be caught under the pommel, as indicated in Fig. 4, thus freeing the skirt from the body of the wearer to prevent injury to the wearer in case of a fall or other accident. The front or apron of thebody A is provided at the lower portion with side extensions E, E adapted to cover the legs of the rider, of which the side portion E is adapted to cover the leg engaging the pommel of the saddle, and this portion is provided at the under side with the usual foot strap F. The fastening member G is arranged on the under side of the side portion E at the lower corner thereof, that is, a distance below the foot strap F, and this fastening member is adapted to engage another fastening member G arranged on the lower portion of the front or apron A of the body, thus encircling the leg at the lower portion thereof. The fastening members G and G are likewise of the stud and socket type, so that in-case of an accident a pressure of the foot readily disconnects the fastening members Gr and G from each other to allow of opening the side portion E and thus free the leg of the rider.

The side portion E is provided with a doubled-up flap E doubled upat the inside of the skirt (see Fig. 5) and having the doubled-up portion connected by fastening members H and H with each other at the lower end, the upper end of the flap E being provided with a buttonhole tab I adapted to button onto a button I so as to hold the doubled-up portion E in firm position on the inside of the skirt. This doubled-up portion insures a proper hang of the garment over the left leg of the rider when the skirt is used for walking purposes, as indicated in Fig. 8.

When the skirt is arranged for walking purposes then the side portion E is drawn back with the upper portion extending over the lower portion of the flaps B and B and with the side portion E overlapping the upper part of the other portion E. In order to hold this side portion E in the position mentioned, use is made of a buttonhole J arranged at the upper corner of the side portion E and adapted to engage a button J on the outside of the back flap B. A loop K is arranged approximately at the junction of the flap B and the side portion E, and this loop is adapted to be engaged with a button K arranged on the outside of the flap B, so that the two devices J, J and K, K hold the side portion E. The skirt is provided with other parts such as hangers, straps, pocket and the like of usual construction and forming no part of my invention.

The hunting and riding skirt shown and described insures a proper fit and safety for riding and it prevents injury to the rider in case of accident as the skirt can readily open so as to free the'rider from entanglements.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A riding skirt having a body and front provided at the lower portion with side extensions projecting rearwardly for covering the legs and provided at the upper portions With flaps adapted to extend over the hips and back, and fastening devices having separable members arranged along the edges of the said flaps for detachably connecting the flaps with each other along the median line of the back of the skirt, whereby the skirt will be freely removable by disconnection of the flaps alone.

2. A riding skirt having a body and front provided at the lower portion with side extensions for covering the legs, one of the side extensions having at its inner face a foot strap, and a fastening device having separable members, one of the fastening members being arranged below the said strap and the other fastening member being arranged upon the inner surface of the lower middle portion of the body front.
