To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JAMES HOWARD TAY-- LOR and IZORA TAYLOR, both citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsyl vania, have invented new and useful Baby- Pants, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to a novel construction of an adjustable baby diaper cover or baby pants, and the object of the invention is to provide a novel device of this character, wherein safety pins, buttons and buttonholes or Similar fastenings are dispensed with, in lier of which we employ tapes, which are securely attached in a novel manner to the garment and can be readily tied about the infants limbs or body and adj usted and let out during the infants growth or increase in size according to requirements.

Our invention further consists of a novel waterproof construction, whereby the escape of moisture will be prevented, provision being made for the device to be adjustable, so that the same device can not only be applied to the infant directly after its birth but it can be let out or adjusted by the proper manipulation of the tapes, so as to be utilized on the infant during its growth until it is a year or more old.

It further consists of a novel arrangement and location of the fastening tapes, whereby the use of safety pins or buttons or like is dispensed with and the device can be let out, according to requirements, and chafing 0f the legs of the infant will be prevented.

It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.

For the purpose of illustrating our invention, we have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present preferred by us, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which our invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that our invention is not limited to ,the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a plan view of a diaper cover or baby pants embodying our invention, showing the blank for the same, and the relative position or arrangement of the tying tapes. Fig. 2 represents a front perspective view of the device, showing the parts in the position they may assume with respect to the infant, directly after its birth or when it is small, the juxtaposed edges of the device being'shown brought closely together and tied by the tapes employed with the requisite tightness or closeness around the infants legs. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of our invention similar to Fig. 2 but showing the position the parts assume when adjusted to accommodate the growth of a larger infant.

Referring to the drawings. 1 designates the blank of the device constituting 'our invention or, in other words, the appearance of the same when laid out flat or prior to its application to the infant. The outer surface 2 is composed of a suitable fabric while the inner surface 3 is of a suitable rubber or waterproof composition, whereby moisture will be retained, and the clothing will be kept dry. The upper edge 4 of our device is slightly curved or of convex contour, as will be understood from Fig. 1, so that when the parts are assembled, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, said upper edge 4 will fit nicely and snugly around the infants body, the device being provided with the plaits 5, so that the requisite fullness or bagginess of the device zfiround the infants back will be provided 6 designates an upper tape, which is'secured on a line substantially parallel to the upper edge 4, preferably by a row of stitching 7, so that the free ends 8 can be readily tied, according to requirements. said tapes being stitched to the blank or body portion, and having the outer tying ends 17 folded over and stitched, as indicated at 18, so that said free ends 17 will extend in substantially parallel or slightly converging lines and assume substantially the position indicated in Fig. 1, whereby the device can be readily tied in position, as will be hereinafter explained.

It is to be noted that the tapes 15-, 6, 20 and 22 are secured to the blank, a desired distance from the marginal edge thereof, in order that the device may be employed in conjunction with infants of different sizes.

It will be further apparent that the lines of stitching 24 and 26 are 'at right angles to each other so that their lower or outer edges 28 form lines upon which to fold inwardly the lower outer edges of the device, when it is to be used as shown in Fig. 2 on a small infant, when the edges 28 are brought into parallelism and juxtaposition with the stitching 15, as seen in said Fig. 2.

If the device is to be applied to a young infant or 'a very small child, the portions of the blank, exterior of the stitched portions of the tape are folded in, inwardly. as will be understood by reference to Fig. 2, and then the juxtaposed edges are brought close together and the ends of the tapes are tied together.

When the device is used with a larger child, it is not necessary to fold in the edge portions of the blank, which extend beyond the tapes 15, 20 and 22, so that the device when in use on a larger infant will appear as seen in Fig. 3.

It will thus be apparent that in accordance with our present invention, we have entirelv elim nated the necessity of employing safety pins or buttons on a device of this character. It will be further apparent that owing to the employment of the tapes to constitute the fastening means and which are secured to the body of the blank at a predetermined or desired distance from the marginal edges thereof, we'have produced a device which has portions which can be readily infolded for a minimum sized infant and which are readily adjustable throughout a large range of sizes of infants without affecting the waterproof nature of the device when assembled with respect to the infant.

It will be further apparent that owing to the dispensing with the useof buttons that the device may be much more readily cleansed than was possible with devices of this character, as heretofore manufactured, 1t belng only necessary to sponge with luke warm Water and soap and then rinse in cold water.

It will be apparent from Fig. 2 that the stitched portions of the tapes 15 and 20 and 22, on each side of the blank are preferably substantially parallel when the flaps are folded in, as seen in said Fig. 2.

It will now be apparent that we have devised a novel and useful construction of baby pants which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while we have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from i the spirit or scope of the invention orsacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a device of the character stated, comprising in combination with a blank of material having a waist portion, side flaps and a bottom flap of a plurality of extending tape ends secured at the waist portion and adapted to be connected, a pair of spaced extending tape ends secured to each side flap, a pair of extending tape ends secured to the bottom flap adjacent the end thereof, one being adapted to be connected with one tape end of a side flap and the other with one tape end of the other side flap, and a pair of oppositely extending tape ends secured adjacent opposite edges of the bottom flap and spaced from the first mentioned pair of bottom flap ends, andeach being adapted to be connected with one of the other tape ends of the side flaps, whereby the connection of the bottom'fiap with the side flaps is independent of the waist connection of the garment.
