Application filed November 27, 1914. Serial No. 8%,175.
T 0 (ZZZ whom it may ooncerm Be it known that I, Josnrrr W. SoHLoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing-Containers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to cartons and packages and has special reference to a container adapted for the packing and dispensing of the article of commerce known as feathen bone. This material is a resilient flat tape or ribbon used in the place of whalebone for stiffening womens garments and is made in continuous lengths which are ordinarily put up in flat coilsand packed in shallow boxes. in selling this material in short lengths and in cutting it up for use, the coil is apt to spring open and become tangled unless great care is exercised in handling it.
Hence, it is the object of this invention to provide a dispensing container which will cooperate with a coil of material of this peculiar nature, in such a manner that the tape or ribbon can be dispensed from the coil in any required lengths without danger of tangling or injuring the portion that remains in the coil, while the latter always re mains housed and protected by the container.
The improved container and its cooperation with the coil of material will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete package; Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the package showing the end of the tape exposed in a position to be grasped and drawn out, and Fig. 3 is also a perspective view of the package showing the box open for the rewinding operation.
The featherbone tape or ribbon is wound one turn upon another until a flat coil of a given size or diameter is produced, such a coil being indicated at a. The box or container is preferably square, although it may be of other shape, and has an internal diameter only slightly greater than that of the coil a. The depth of the box is also only slightly greater than the thickness of the coil or the width of the tape. The body of the box consists of the bottom I) and the low side walls 0, While the top or cover consists of two sections 65 and ,e, the former bemg permanently fixed to the body of the box by attachment to its side walls or otherwise, and the latter being displaceable or movable, preferably by hinging it to some part of the body or to the free edge of the permanent section at, as shown at e. The permanent section d thus forms a pocket f within the box, entrance to which is afforded by the movable section 6. The movable section is provided with side flanges adapted to fit nor the side walls 0 when the cover is closed. t a point in the sidewall 0, preferably opposite the pocket 7 and to one side of the center, is provided a wholly inclosed opening or'eye g. of such dimensions and shape as to permit the tape or ribbon to pass freely through it. This opening is, for a purpose which will hereafter appear, tobe distinguished from a notch cut into the wall 0 from its upper edge downward, the bridge 9 across the upper side of the opening serving a useful purpose. In the side flange e of the movable cover an open notch h is provided, which may have substantially the same shape as the opening 9 and is located in line with the latter so as to provide a free passage for the tape or ribbon when the cover section 6 is closed.
The area of the permanent top section 01 is such that the coil of featherbone can be forced edgewise beneath its free edge and into the pocket so that it will lie flat upon the bottom of the box. When this has been done the outer free end of the coil is threaded through the opening 9, the coil having been inserted in such position with respect to the opening 9 that after the free end of the strip has passed through the opening it will have a tendency to lie in a plane par allel to the wall of the box in which the opening is located. In this position the exposed end can be covered by the flange of the movable cover when the latter is closed and the box is to be shipped or stored.
Broadly speaking the opening 9 may be located at any other point in the side walls 0 besides that shown and described, but in any case it is preferable to have it located at such a point that the end of the strip projecting therefrom shall lie in a direction which when the strip is pulled in the same direction will not bring a strain on the coil which would tend to force it out of the pocket f. Such a strain would sometimes cause the coil to force the movable cover open and jump out of the box.
In dispensing the featherbone, the movable cover is first lifted sufliciently to free the covered end of the strip from its position seen in Fig. 1, after which the cover is closed down and with the box held in one hand and the end of the strip in the other, the strip is drawn out the required length and cut off, the coil meanwhile rotating freely within the box and without the aid of any central hub or axle. Owing to the elasticity of the tape, the inner coils expand as the outer coils are dispensed, so that the external diameter of the coil remains the 7 same and the shape is preserved by contact of the periphery of the coil with the side walls of the box. If an excessive amount of the material has been drawn oil, it may be rewound upon the coil, by lifting the cover 6 as shown in Fig. 3' and rotating the coil by hand while it remains in the box. In this operation the importance of the inclosed hole 9 is apparent for it serves as a guiding eye to insure the even laying of each turn rewound upon the coil. An open notch, for instance, would permit the strip to escape and makeit very diflicult to rewind.
I claim:
1. A dispensing container comprising a shallow box having a cover, a section of which is permanently fixed while another section is displaceable, said box having a side wall provided with an opening in combination with a flat coil of comparatively stiff elastic tape such as featherbone, having a diameter substantially equal to the inside diameter of the box and contained in said box, the free outer end of said tape adapted to project through said opening in a direction such that when pulled upon along the line of its projection the coil within the box will tend to remain beneath the permanently fixed section of the cover.
2. A dispensing container comprising a shallow box having a cover, a section of which is permanently fixed while another section is displaceable, said box having a side wall provided with an opening, in combination with a flat coil of tapelike material such as featherbone, contained in said box, the free outer end of said material adapted to project through said opening in a direction such that when pulled upon along the line of its projection the coil within the box will tend to remain beneath the permanently fixed section of the cover.
In witness whereof, I subscribe my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
