Specification of Letters Tatent.
Patented (lot. 26, li15.
Application filed July 3, 1913. Serial No. 777,151.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR WM. STEVEN- SON, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Fastening and Retaining Articles of Jewelry and the like in Postal and other Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes of the class in general use for sending jewelry and other articles through the post, and has for its object the provision of a simple fastening for both keeping the box closed and for preventing the contents from accidentally dropping out in the act of opening.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood I will describe the same by reference to the accompanying drawing in which--- Figure 1 is a View of a jewelry box with lid raised. Fig. 2 shows the box closed and fastened.
For the purpose of my invention I employ a loop or band A of elastic or other spring-like material which is carried through perforations B, made in the sides of the box C, so that it bridges across the inside of the box and is continued around the bottom of the box forming a continuous band.
IVhen an article of jewelry is put in the box the elastic bridge or band A is first lifted upward and the article placed underneath it, the lid is then closed and the exterior part of the band slipped over it; the efieot of this is not only to secure the box but to tighten the elastic bridge inside thus securing the article to the bottom of the box.
To open the box the elastic band A is slipped off, and should the box open suddenly or be turned upside down, the article inside will be found to be held secure by the elastic bridge inside the box.
I am aware that it has previously been proposed to use elastic bands for securing lids of boxes or jars, suitable holes or slits being made in the box or lid for retaining the elastic band and I do not claim such generally, but only such as herein shown and described.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. In a box of the class described, having sides provided with perforations made in the sides of the box, means for fastening and retaining articles carried therein, said means comprising an elastic, or spring-like loop, or band, passed through said perforations so as to stretch across the inside of the box and under which articles to be carried are placed, said band or loop being made of suitable length and elasticity to permit of its being drawn over the lid of the box to fasten it substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a box of the class described having sides provided with alined perforations made in the sides of the box, means for fastening and retaining articles carried therein, said means comprising an elastic, or spring-like loop, or band, passed through said perforations so as to stretch across the inside of the box and under which articles to be carried are placed, said band or loop being made of suitable length and elasticity to permit of its being drawn over the lid of the box to fasten it substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR WM. STEVENSON.
