QLFEARLEEi TQDLEY,
GOLLARFFASTENER.
- Ta all whom it ma concern 1Be it mown t at I, CHARLES TOOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useton and eliminate the chatting and rubbing of the neck of the wearer incident to the use of such a collar button, and capable of be-r ing manipulated with greater case than a collar button and of securely fastening a collar to the neck band of a shirt.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a collar fastening device of this character which will not injure the button hole of the neck band of a shirt like a collar button, or produce any pressure on the neck of the wearer. x
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination ofparts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim appended hereto, it being understood thatvarious changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. a
In the 'drawings:-F igure 1 isa rear elevation of a collarequipped with a fastening device constructed in accordance with this invention, the collar being partly broken away and shown applied to a shirt. Fig. 2 is a perspective view or" the collar. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3-3 oi Fig. 1. Fig. dis a detail perspective view of the fastenin device.
Like numera s of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, in which 1s illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 3. designates a collar provided at specification of Letters Patent.

the center of the back with a depending tab 2, preferably formed integral with the inner portion 3 of the collar by two spaced substantially vertical slits, as shown, but itmay be applied to the same in the form of a separate piece or attachment, tab consists of a narrow vertical oblong strip having straight side edges 4 and provided with a tapered or pointed lower end 5 to enable it to be readily inserted in the back button hole 6 of the neck band 7 of a shirt *8,
The tab carries a locking piece'9 having a tapered or pointed lower portion 10 corre sponding to the pointed neck 5 of the tab, and fitted against and stitched to the same, as shown at 11. The locking piece 9, which fits flat against the tab,'has its upper portion free to form a retaining flap 12, which, after the tab has been passed through the button hole of the neck band, is adapted to if desired. The
engage with the outer portion thereof. The
tab and the retaining flap form a crotch-in which the lower edge or portion of the neck band is confined, whereby the collar is securely fastened to the neck band.
- The locking device is arranged in the recess or cut away portion 13 of the collar and presents smooth fiat inner and outer sur-' faces, and does not interfere with the free sliding of a neck tie'through the collar.
The recess 13 of the inner portion of the collar has straight side edges throughout substantially the entire length of the recess, the corncrsbeing rounded at the bottom of the recess, as shown; As the tab forms an up wardly projecting neck band engaging per tion which is arranged within the peripheryof the tab, and as the'locking piece does not increase the width of the pointed tab, the
neck band engaging flap does not require any manipulation in inserting the tab in a button hole. In fact, the attached portion of the piece which forms the flap still-ens the tab and facilitates the passing of the same through the button hole. After the tab has been passed through the button hole far enough to carry the free end of the flap beyond. the lower edge of the portion 14 of the'neck band, the tab is drawn upward to engage the flap with the said portion-14. The collar is readily detached from the neck band by moving the tab downwardly a sufiicient distance to carry the flap beyond the engaged portion, and then drawing the tab outwardly. The flap will he fiat against the tahand not interfere with the with- Edd draWal of the same from the button hole. The locking device is adapted to be engaged 'Wiill neck bands having-plain button holes,
as Well as those equipped with the f0llI1 Of 5 neck bands shown in the accompanying 110 at ,the back of its inner portion with spaced substantially vertical slits forming a nar.
row oblong tab and a narrow oblong recess receiving the tab and having Its side edges contiguous to the side edges of the tab sub- 15 stantiall throughout the entire length of the recess, said tab being provided with a pointed or tapered lower end, and a tapered locking piece conforming to the configuration of, secured to, and lying Within the periphery of the tapered or pointed lower end of the tab and having a free upper portion forming a' flap, said tab being adapted to be passed through the button hole of a garment without manipulating the flap, and the said locking piece being relatively stifi? and tapered upwardly to engage the garment at the top of the button hole.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signa-- ture in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES TOOLEY.
