To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS F. SoMERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county and State of New York,

have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Corset-Steels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to corset steels and more particularly to an lmprovement on the automatic corset steel shown and described,

wire thereto without in any way interfering with the automatic action of the steel.

Further objects and the novel features'of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawings in which:

Figure 1 represents a portion of a corset with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the strips in their operative position. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view along line 33 of Fig. 2, the strips being slightly bowed apart to more clearly show the arrangement thereof. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are plan views of the individual strips comprising the improved steel.

As indicated by the drawings, my improved steel comprises the three superposed strips 10, 11 and 12, of thin steel or other suitable material having the requisite strength and flexibility. The strips 10 and 11 are in most respects similar to the strips a and 6 shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the patent referred to above. The strip 10 is provided with side recesses 13 near one end thereof forming a contracted portion or neck 14:. The main strip 11 has a slot 15 near one end of a length slightly greater than the width of the strip 10 and of a width slightly greater than the width of the contracted portion or neck 14, which the slot is adapted to receive. The strip 11 is slightly wider than strip 10 and is thus provided with a slot and the strip 10 with a contracted portion, which are interlocked by passing the end of strip 10 through the slot in strip 11 until the contracted portion of strip 10 is located in the slot 15. The strips are capa-' ble of sliding movement with respect to each other which takes place when the steel It is to be understood of course that instead of supplying one end of a strip only with a slot and the other strip with a con tracted portion, a slot and contracted portion may be provided at opposite ends of each strip their ends. 7

There is a slot or opening 16 punched through the strip 11 adjacent each end there of. A separate thin narrow reinforcing strip or bone-wire 12 of approximately the same length as the strip 11 fits 'closely against the strip 10 intermediate its ends. It will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 3 that when the central portions of the strips lay flat against one another, a part of the strip 10 which extends through the slot 14 and across the hole 16, serves to clamp the part of the strip 12 which ex-' tends through the hole 16, against the underside of the end of the strip 11. j The steel is inserted in a pocket on a corset with the main steel as illustrated in Fig. 1 or secured thereto in any suitable manner, It will be seen that when the steel is in position strips 10and 11 are interlocked at their upper ends and the strip 10 is free at 1 its lower end. The strip 12 projects through the holes 16 at the upper and lower ends of the strip 11 and the two strips 11. and 12 arethereby attachably connected to-" gether attheir upper and lower ends.

It will be seen that I have provided a corset steel which has a separate reinforcing bone-wire removably secured thereto that has a tendency to hold the free end of one of the superposed strips against the main steel. The strips are sufliciently flexible so as to prevent any discomfort to the wearer of the garment.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is: Y 1. A corset steel comprising in combina tion two superposed interlockingly connected strips and a third strip throughout most of its length fitting against one of said strips and held in place adjacent its ends by the other of said strips. I

A corset steel comprising in combination a main body portion, a strip superposed on the body portion and removably connected thereto at one end and free at the opposite end and another strip fitting against said first-mentioned strip and connected to the main body portion and readily detachable therefrom.

3. A corset steel comprising a main strip, a second strip superposed thereon, one of said strips having a slot and the other having a contracted part fitting said slot whereby said parts may be detachably connected together, one of said strips having apertures at its ends, and a third strip superposed on said before mentioned strips and having the ends thereof extending through said apertures to connect the said third strip with said before mentioned strips.

A corset steel comprising in combination two superposed strips connected to gether near one end, one of said strips having a hole therein near the point of connection of the two strips, and a third strip having a part extending through said hole, the part extending through said hole being engaged by the other of said two strips and clamped against the strip having the hole therein.

5. A corset steel comprising in combination two superposed strips connected at both their upper and lower ends and relatively movable, and a third strip located between said connected strips and fastened to one of 1 them.
