To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, Mai-H lts Bonn, a citizen of the United; States, residing at Stic'kney, in the county of Aurora, State of of the invention, such as. willenable others skilled inthe art to which k d it appertailis to This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in locking devices, and while I have in the present instance shown and described my inventidn as employed in connection with what is commonly known as a buckling end gate, I wish it to be understood that the invention is not limited in its useful application to this particular purpose, as itis equally well adapted for use in connection with barn doors, the side walls of wagon bodies, boxes and similar structures. In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a locking device by means 'of which the gate, door or other structure may be firmly and securely fastened so that the liability of its being accidentally opened is obviated;
Furthermore, it is my purpose to provide. a locking device of this character which will embody in constructionthe desired features of simplicity, efiiciency and reliability, and which may be manufactured and marketed at a relatively low cost.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the letter A designates, in the present instance, the rear portion of the wagon box provided with the ordinary vertical retaining cleats 1. The end gate is indicated as an entirety by the letter G and includes the relatively long section 2 and the relatively short section 3, the two sections being connected by means of the hinges 4:, so that'the gate m y'buckle outward. The shorterend: gate section has rigidly connected thereto a lock board 5 which is tapered or reduced atone end as at 6, this tapered endhaving an open inou thed slot 7 for the purpose hereinafter described.

As will be noted, thes pindle 19 extends entirely' through the bore16 of the post 12, and eonseque'ntlyits innerend projects beyond the inner 'face ofthe tail board section2 and'al'so extends through the'bore23 ofthe spring '24 which 'i's in the form of a bowed metallic strap which bears against grooved and cut to constitute a casing for the inner-face of the board section 2. .wearingplate is carried by this spring strap. 21 and is also formed with a central bore alining with the bore in the strap. The terminal of the shank 19 carries a reetangular locking block 26. The numeral 27 indicatesa vertical bar or block which is fastened over the strap spring and over parts of the lockwhich lie at the inner face of the board section 2,. this block being within the recess 30 and form a floor therefor, this plate 32 having a rectangular central opening 33 of the same size as'the recess 31 and registering therewith. It will be noted that the slot or opening 33 in the plate is of sufficient size to accommodatethe'rectangular locking plate 26 and permit the latter to lie or seat within the recess 31 at de- 3 sired times. If desired, a coil spring 34 may be interposed between the head 20 of the spindle 19 and the bottom of the recess 17 of the post 12 to tension and cushion these parts. 7 V
The above is a description. of the mechanical features of my invention, and the operation is as follows: When it is desired to close and lock thegate, the sections 2 and 3 are arranged in a straight line with each other and held by the cleats 1, and the looking board 5 will lie over against the outer face of the sections as shown in Fig. 1. The handle 21 is turned so that the locking block 26 at the end of the spindle 19 will be turned together.
to such position that it will register with and be forced into'the recess 31 by the outward pressure of the bowed spring 24:, and under these conditions the locking head or bar 18 of the post 12 will turn with the latter and lie crosswise of the open-ended slot in the end 7 of the locking board, and bearing against such board will clamp the latter against movement, thus locking the parts- If it is desired to unlock the board, the handle 21 is pulled outward against the action of the bowed spring 24,
thereby depressing the spring or flattening it and withdrawing the locking block 26 from the recess 31. WVhen it has been withdrawn from the-recess, the operator gives ,7 the handlea quarter of a turn, which is permitted because the locking block has been withdrawn from the recess 31 and this causes the locking block to assume a position spanning or extending transversely of the opening 32. of the'plate 33. At the same time this turning movement of the handle will turn the locking head or bar 18 from a I position transverse of the open ended slot to a position longitudinal thereof and thus permit the tail locking board to be withdrawn and the tail board openedor removed.
It is tobe understood that the flanges 22 ofthe bar-like head 20 are made of suflicient depth so that when the locking block 26 is withdrawn from its socket by pulling for? ward or outward on the handle 21, the inner portion of these flanges 22 will still engage in the recessin the head bar 18 so that when the handle is turned, although the block26 is out of its socket, these flanges will still engage with the walls of the slotin the head bar 18 and thus'turn the head bar and its connected parts.

In case it should be desiredto use the. de-' vice on a door, such as a barn door, an addi-. tional handle 35 may be provided'at the end 36 of the shank 19, 'whichin this instance is projected beyond the locking block 26. This handle will lie atthe inside of the door so that the latter may be locked and unlocked from the inside, andunder such conditions it will, of course, be evident that instead of locking block, the handle will be pushed to force such locking block from its locking re- CBSS.

I wish it to be understoodthat I do not confine myself to, all the precise details-of conpulling on the handleyline to release the struction herein set forth by wayof illustration, as modification and variationmay be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
