To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ALBERT E. GRUBB and TnoiuAs J. BURY, citizens of the United States, residing at Enid, in the county of Garfield and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Garbage-Cans, of which the following is a specification.

The general objects of the invention are to facilitate the operation of raising the closures of garbage cans; to adapt these closures to descend automatically following the depositingof garbage in the can; and to simplify the operation of removing the garbage from the can.

' The body 5 or outer receptacle is herein shown asformed of sheet metal, although, the body or outer receptacle may be formed of other material found suitable for the purose. The body or outer receptacle 5 is preferably though not necessarily cylindrical in either end and the supporting legs 6 connected to the lower end of the body or outer receptacle serve to support the same in spaced relation to the round. The lid or cover 7 is preferably formed of the same material as the body or outer recepta'cle 5 and is herein shown as connected to the latter by a hinge 8 and has a resilient latch 9 which springs over the beaded upper edge 10 ofthe body or outer receptacle 5. It will be understood, however, that this connection is merely illustrative of one embodiment of the invention and the hinge connection may be dispensed with if desired, in which event the cover, when arranged on the receptacle, will be secured against displacement in any Well-known manner.

The gravity closures 11 normally seal the ports or openings 12 in the lid or cover 7. These elements are made so as to be raised with a minimum of effort on the part of the found that this result is operator and I have the closures substanattained by forming tially sector-shape in contour and suitably connecting them to the lid or cover such as by hinges 13. In the present instance, the parts conform to the configuration of the closures and are slightly less in area than the latter so as to be completely sealed when the closures are lowered as shown. It is to be understoodt-hat we are not to be limited to the specific configurations of the closures and ports, since, the result above stated may be attained by forming the closures into other shapes. The mechanism for raising the closures is herein shown to consist of a connecting rod 14-. arranged in a guide 15 on the inner face of the outer rece tacle or body 5 and having at one end a pe a1 16 extending laterally beyond the lower end of the body or outer receptacle 5. A lever 17 is pivotally connected in any preferred manner to the lid or cover 7 such as by a hook 18, which is received by an eye 19 depending from the lid or cover 7 The lever connects at one end withthe upper end portion of the connecting rod 14; and a pin and slot connection 20 is made between the opposite end of the lever and one end portion of an arm 21 which is pivotally connected, as shown at 22, to the lid or cover 7. The free end portion of the arm carries a yoke 23, the levers 241 of which underlie the closures 11. With this construction it will be seen that the levers 2 1 of the yoke will move upwardly and lift the closures when the pedal 16 is depressed. When the force which depresses the pedal will gravitate to their normal positions as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The stop 25 connected to the central portion of the lid or cover 7 is arranged so that its opposite ends will form abutments for the closures when the latter are raised, whereby, to prevent the closures from moving beyond the vertical when the pedal is depressed, thus, insuring the descent of the closures when the pedal is released as previously described.

The inner receptacle 26 for the garbage is herein shown as formed of textile material and conforms to the shape of the ordinary bag and has openings adjacent to its mouth to receive hooks 27 arranged at spaced intervals around the upper end portion'of the outer receptacle or body, whereby, the said inner receptacle may, when filled with garbage,.be readily removed from the outer receptacle or body, placed in a collecting wagon and an empty inner receptacle placed in its stead in the outer receptacle or body and connected as shown.

The device is chiefly intended as avdepository for dry garbage, such as paper, fruit skins and the like and to be placed on streetv corners or other availableportions of streets, such as in front of stores wherein it .may be used as an advertising medium,

foreign matter by the outer receptacle and the consequent foul odors.

Although we have shown and described one embodiment of our invention it is to be understood that we are not to be limited to the specific structure nor to the particular arrangement of the parts, herein shown and described since it will be seen that various changes will be made, in the scope of the appended claims without departlng from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

What we claim as new is:

1. A garbage can comprising a body, a removable receptacle suspended within the body, a ported cover closlng the receptacle, gravity closures for the ports of the said cover, a lever arranged within the body and pivotally supported by the said cover, an

arm pivoted to the cover and connected to one .end of the said lever, means supported by the said arm and adapted to engage the said gravity closures to move the same to an open position and'a foot actuating rod connected to the opposite end of the said lever substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. In a garbage can comprising a body being open throughout, a ported cover connected thereto, gravity closures for the ports of the said cover, a lever pivotally supported by thecover intermediate its ends, a movable arm carried by the cover and disposed above the said lever and connected to one end thereof, an actuating member supported by the said arm and adapted to engage the said gravity closures to move the same to an open position 'and a foot actuating rod connected to the opposite end of the lever substantially as and for the purpose described.

4. In a garbage can comprising a body, a ported cover connected thereto, gravity closures for the ports of the said cover, an arm pivoted to the under side of the said cover, a lever pivotally supported by the cover and having itsfree end connected to the said arm, a foot actuating rod connected to the opposite end of the said lever, and a U-shaped actuatin member supported by the said arm and a apted to contact the said gravity closures to move them to an open position.
