To all whom it may concern: 'Be it known that l, JoiiN J. MULLANEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lniprovements in Pocket- Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates-to pocket. lamps, and has special reference to devices adapted for'lighting cigars, etc., comprising a fuel reservoir and a wheel which is mechanically actuated to produce the igniting sparks.
The object of the invention is to simplify and improve the mechanism of such devices, whei'eby they will be rendei'ed more reliable in action and cheaper to produce.
My improvements are principally copned t0 the mechanism for actuating the wheel, whereby I have dispensed with rack and pinion mechanism and have devised a pawl and ratchet mechanism whereby the wheel is positively stopped after a predetermined throw and also the'same .mechanism positively stops the lid.
Further improvement consists, in the mechanism for holding a pyropliorous alloy in contact with the wheel, said alloy also acting to hold the wheel against rearward movement by the pawl when the lid is shut.
'A further feature of improvement consists in mount-ing various parts on a single support, which can be assembled and then' placed in the box.
Further features of improvement consist in the construction, arrangement and det-ails of the various parts, as will more fully appear in connection with a description of the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a side view on an enlarged scale of a lamp embodying the invention, and

1 represents a box or casing having a liquid reservoir 2 adapted to contain a wick .45 3 which extends upward through a wick tube 4 secured to the top of the reservoir, and within the top of the box.
5 represents a lid pivoted at 6,l and 7 represents an operating button controlling the catch 8, these parts being constructed in a Well known manner. 9 represents a filling aperture which is to be closed by a pivoted cap 10, which has a stop projection 11 or other suitable closure.
12 represents a coiled spring carried on a post 13 and bearing on a pin 14 carried by the lid 5. Spring 12 also has a hooked cnil portion 16 which acts to stop the lid at the do-tted position shown in Fig. 1.
17 -represents a bridge piece having vertical inturned flanges 18 and a cross dineinber 19 connecting Vthe sides 17.
2O represents a wheel carried on shaft 2l Journaled in opposite sides of the bridge piece, the edge of the wheel being corrugated or knul-led in the usual manner. On one side, the flint wheel 20 bears against the ianges 18and on the other is provided with four laterally projecting pins 22, which are of such length as to almost touch the bridge piece. 17, thereby holding the wheel 2() in position. In order to actiiate the wheel 20, a pawl 24 is mounted on the pin 14. This pawl is held in engagement with the pins 22 by a spring 25. The pawl 24 comprises a .hooked portion 26 which directly engages with the lower pin 22 as the lid opens, and a straight edge 27 of such length that when the pawl is Iin the dotted position shown in Fig. 1 and having the hooked portion engaged with one of the pins 22 the elongated edge 27 is engaged with the following pin 22. By reason of the engagement of the pawl after a predetermined definite movement with two pins on opposite sides of the edge 27, further movement of the wheel is positively stopped, and also further movement of the lid. When the lid is shut, it
will be seen that the straight face 27 of the pawl rides down on the lower pin 22 until the spring snaps the pawl upward to the position shown in Fig. 1. Thus it will he seen that when the catch 8 is released thc spring 12 bearing on the pin 14 throws the lid upward, which carries the pawl with it and thereby pulls the friction wheel with a very quick and sharp motion, until the lid stops by the locking'of the pawl with two of the pins.
28 represents a pyrophorous alloy, of suitable composition, Which bears on the surface of the wheel 20, the alloy being held in a small three sided box formed on the bridge ieee 19. The alloy is pressed downwardly y one end of a spring 29, the other end of which is carried in an upturned extension 30 of the bridge piece 19, which extension has a projecting notch as at 31 with which the other end 32 of the spring 29 is engaged. By disengaging the end 32 of the spring i 29 from the notch 31 the spring is released and allows the alloy 28 to be removed or inserted. j
From .the foregoing description it will be seen that the wheel and pyrophorous alloy are all mounted on a single member, and
can be assembled and then, readily secured'l in the top of the box. j.
33 represents the usual closure tube for covering the end of the wick when the lid is shut, to prevent ormation'of gases and cost of production is very materially cheapcned, and
also a device is 'provided which is simple and reliable in in operation.

1. In a spark producing device, the com'- bination with supporting means, of a wheel having actuating 'projections, v projections when moved in one direction to rotate the wheel, a pyrophorous alloy 'bear ing on said wheel, and means 'for moving said pawl to operate said wheel a predetermined .distance, said pawl after a predetermined movement positively interlocking with said projections tosto'p the wheel.
2.
