TAPE-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT lVIUS'K, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tape-I-Iolders, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the'accompanying drawings.

The present invention relates to holders for tape or the like and it has for an obj cct to provide a structure by which tape or similar goods employed by garment manufacturers or others may be inclosed in such a manner that, while it may be used by a duly authorized person, it may be locked against use when desired.

To these and other ends the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

In carrying out the invention, there is preferably employed a casing or housing 1 which in this instance is of cylindrical form so that the spool 52 may turn freely therein. One end 3 of the casing serves as a closure by which access to the interior of the casing is obtained, this closure preferably being hinged at 4 and being secured in a manner to be hereinafter described.

In order to permit the tape to be removed, the casing may have a longitudinal slot 5 in its side wall and the free end of the tape on the spool is passed through the slot, the latter permitting the tape to be drawn from either end of the spool as the tape unwinds. To the end that the slot may be closed so that the tape may not be surreptitiously removed while the user of the device is not near, aslot closure or cover 6 may be provided and this cover may be hinged to the casing preferably at the end opposite the casing closure 3 so that a Specification of Letters Patent.

single locking device may be employed for securing the casing closure and the slot closure. So that a portion of the tape cannot be reached by introducing a sharp instrument between the slot closure and the casing, the former is concaved on its under side by bending the closure into substantially V-shape in cross section, the opposite edges of the slot closure firmly engaging the outside of the casing on opposite sides of the dispensing slot or opening 5.

Preferably the slot cover is slotted at 7 to fitover an eye 8 or other lock anchoring device secured to the side of the casing in proximity to the end closure 3 and the latter may have a hasp 9 pivoted thereto and also adapted to be fitted over the eye, so that a single padlock 10 (Fig. 1) secures both the hasp and the slot cover. On the under side of the slot cover 6 may be arranged a device such as a hook 11 which has a sharp point in order that it may penetrate the tape as shown in Fig. 4, thus permitting the free end of the tape to be in position where it may be grasped when the slot cover is opened, the slack portion of the tape being drawn into the casing by turning the tape spool by hand. The casing may be supported in any suitable manner but, in this instance, itis arranged on one side of a chair so that a user at all times has the same at hand. Preferably, the chair bottom is provided at one side with a pair of supporting hooks (see Figs. 5 and 6) which, in this instance, are each formed from a single piece of sheet metal bent substantially into U- shape, one arm 12 being provided with eyes 13 through which screws or other fasteners are passed to engage the chair and the other arm 14 serving as the hook and having an opening 15 by which the screws are reached. The arm 14 is engaged by one of the straps 16 secured to the side of the casing at such points that the casing slot opens upwardly and slightly to that side of the vertical axis of the casing nearest the chair, thus permitting the tape to be drawn from the casing without undue friction on the sides of the slot.

The present invention has been especially designed for clothing factories using tape on spools. At the present time, in such factories, certain employees have the duty of applying tape to the garments and are given spools on which the tape is arranged. It has been found that in most, if not all, of the factories this tape is stolen during dinner hour or before or after Working hours by other employees and the loss from this source is considerable.

With this invention the employee using the tape is furnished With a key to the padlock and is required to close and secure the slot and casing on leaving the Work. In doing this, the end of the tape is first secured to the hook on the slot cover and the spool is then turned by hand in the casing to take up the slack so that no portion of the tape Will project When the slot cover is shut. The slot cover and the hasp on the casing closure are both pased over the eye on the casing and then an ordinary padlock or other locking device is passed through the eye, thus securing the casing closure and the slot cover by a single locking device.

The holder is inexpensive to manufacture and its operation is simple. lVhile it has been especially designed for tape it is apparent that it may be used for strings and strips of all kinds.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A holder of the class described comprising a casing having a longitudinally extending slot in the side thereof, a hinged closure at one end provided ith a pivoted hasp adapted to lie on one side of the casing, an eye on the casing over which the hasp fits, and a slot cover pivoted to the end ofthe casing opposite the casing closure and fitting over the eye at its other end.

2. In a holder of the class described, a casing having a longitudinally disposed dispensing slot, a closure hinged to one end of said casing, a cover for said slot hinged at the diametrically opposite disposed corner of the casing, a hasp pivoted to the free end of the first-named closure, said hasp and the adjacent end of the slot-closure having openings adapted to coincide When in parallel relation, and means on the casing adapted to be received in said slots.
