Applieation tiled H arch 21, 1911. Serial No. 815,874. .n f
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. PORTER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at off Hartford and Hartford, in the county State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in of which the following is a specification.y
The invention relates generally to fountain brushes' and more especially of fountain blacking daubers for shoes or the like. A-
The primary ',object ofthe invention is the provision of a brush 'of this character in which the'blacking .paste will be delivered to the bristles lof the brush for the application of the said paste to foot-wear whereby the same may thus obviating the necessity of'soiling the hands when applying the blacking to the foot-wear.
. Another object ofthe invention is the provision of a brush of this character -in which the blacking fluid or substance is held within a reservoir carried upon the stock of the brushgso that said fluid o r substance may be dispensed into the bristles of the brush for the applying thereof to footwear the reservoir being formed from compressible metal thus permitting the fluid or substance to be ejected therefrom as the occasion requires.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a Abrush in which ,the bristles thereof are confined within a removable cap thus preventing the accumulation of dust and dirt thereon when the said brush is not in use.
A still furtherobject of the invention is the provision of a brush of this char. acter which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable andl eiiicientin operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.-
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and 'arrangement of parts as wil1 be hereinafter more fully described, illusdrawings and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
,In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the brush constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation of `the reservoir.
, Similar reference-characters indicate corbe of any ydesired length,
Blacking-Daubers, suitable ,material carryto the class' be polished in the gated hollow collapsible body of the bodyresponding`lparts throughout the several views of t e ldrawin v. t Referring to the 'awin by numerals, the brush comprises a yhama .5 which may shapeand:V constructed from any ing -at one end an internally threaded ferf rule or collar 6 vin which is detachably mounted ay stock 7, the ferrule orcollar being formed at its upper edgewi-th an inturned flange 8 concentrically disposed with respect tothe concaved recessor basin 9 l formed in thebody ofthe stock?, thelat-ter being also providedwith a' central dis nsing tube 10 opening into the recess or asin 9 at the top of the brush and projecting into the tufted bristles 11 suitably fixed in the bottom of the said stock so'that blackn iuid or substance may be dispensed in thi bristles 11 for a purpose as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Removably mounted or super-imposed upon the top of the stock 7, is a. blacking container or reservoir comprising an' elon- 12 the upper end of which is contracted and folded as at 13 and to this end aiiixed a folding key 14. The opposite end of the saidbody 12` is provided with e. ho per like bottom 15 correspondingly shape' and fitted, within the recess er basin' 9 in the top of the stool; 7, the said bottom 15 being provided with a discharge opening 16 alimrigwith the isf pensing tube 10 for delivering the' conte ts 12 to the ,dis' ensing 'tube4 Awhence it' will How between t e bristles 11 carried by the stock.
Formed integrally-with the body 12 and' concentrically with respect with the hop- .per like'` bottom 15 is an out-turned annular flange i9-the latter being engaged between stock 7 and-the inturned A the top of the flange-'.8 of the `ferrule or ring 6 on the handle 5 ofthe ick-15h so that when the said ring 6 is tightenedv upon the stock 7 the body12: will be secui-Uv mounted thereon. It is evident that by tuning the key 14 the body will be folded altar compressing the same thereby displacing the blacking fiuid or substance within said .body for 'the dispensing thereof from the same.
Removably fitted upon the stock 7 and inclosing the bristles 1l. is a ca 17 the same being formed with a knurled edge 1S thus permitting its ready insertion on andre- 1 n moval frin the 'said stock 7 as the occasion may require, the cap `1 7 being designed te protect the bristlesv l1 from' dust and dirt When'the' brush is not in use. The `cap l?,
5 when fitted upon the stock 7,`Will. conceal the bristles 1l thereinyso aste exclude all air from the blacki'ng on the bristles when the dauber is not in use. Itis a known fact that air dries the blaeking on the bristles,
`and makes them" unfit fory use', so that by the use of the cap 17, this will beobviated. What is claimed isf-.- l
The combination with a brush sto ck roxvidedwith a--basin-like cavity in one ace,
"and .bristles projecting from its opposite face, off a collapsible container having a` hopper-shaped lbottom adapted to fit Withinthe basin-like cavity in the stock, and an annular Hange circumscribing' said bottom, a handle having a ring detachably threaded on the stock and engageable with the flange for yremovably fastening the container upon the stock, and a delivery tubel mounted centrally in the stock and projecting into the bristles and communicating with thev oontainer at its bottom. f In testimony whereof I affix my signature :in` presenceof two Witnesses. l
Y WILLIAM F. PORTER.
