To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES DIETRIOH, residing in J anesville, in the county of Rock and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Three-Horse Eveners, of which the following is a de scription, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which are a part of this specification.

Thls invention relates to three horse eveners andhas for its ob ect to provide means for permitting the even distribution of the load among thethreehorses with a vehicle of the type having a single pole.

The invention consists in providing a lever pivoted to the pole and connected by a 7 chain or the like passing around pulleys to a doubletree to which a pair of horses are hitched and which lever has a direct connection at the proper distance from its pivotal connection with a swingletree to which the third horse is hitched, the cable connection being so guided around the pulleys as to approximately center the doubletree over the )ole. 1 With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the three horse evener herein claimed, its parts and combinations of parts and all equivalents.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in the several views;

In these drawings 5 represents a wagon pole of ordinary construction to which is secured a pulley casing, comprising a pair of fiat plates 6 bolted together and spaced apart with an equalizing lever 7 pivoted between them on a bolt 8 which passes through the two plates 6 and also through the lever and the pole. One end of the lever 7 is considerably longer than the other and has a swingletree 9 connected directly to it by a chain 10 or otherwise. The other end of the equalizing lever is given a bend rearwardly and hasa series of openings, in any one of which a pulley block 11 may be hooked. A chain or cable 12 is connected to the pole by a clip 13 at a point slightly in advance of the pulley casing and passes around the pulley block 11 and thence around one of a pair of pulleys 14 arranged side by side between the plates 6, and over a similar pulley l5 nearer the front, and then connects with a doubletree 16 having a pair of swingletrees 17 connected thereto. The arrangement of the pair of pulleys14 with the pulley 15 in advance thereof enables the chain or cable 12 to have a bearing support on the pole,

so as to bring the doubletree 16 approximately centrally over the pole to enable the pair of horses to'be located on the opposite sides of the pole as ina two horse team, the pulley 15 being sufficiently close to the pulleys 14 as to cause the chain or cable to makea reverse bend in passing therearound.

The pulley 14 on the right of the pulley casing, which is not in use when the device is arranged as shown, is to receive the chain in the same manner as pulley 14 on the left when the evener is arranged for the third horse on the left of the pair instead of on the right, this change being easily permitted by reversing the position of the equalizing lever 7 and changing the chain or cable 12 to, a swingletree having connection with one end of the equalizing lever, a chain or like connection secured to the pole, a pulley on the other end of the equalizing lever about which the chain connection passes directly from the pole, a pulley on the pole around which the chain connection next passes, and a doubletree secured to the chain connection where it leaves the pulley on the pole.

2. A three horse evener, comprising a wagon pole, an equalizing lever pivoted thereto with one end longer than the other, the shorter end of the equalizing lever being bent rearwardly, a swingletree connected with the longer end of theequalizing lever,

to the other side of the clip 13 and passing it around the pulley 14 on the right and on the opposite side of pulley 15. The series of a pulley block having adjustable connection with the shorter end of the equalizing lever, a pulley mounted on the pole in advance of the pivotal connection of the equalizing lever, a chain or like connection secured to the pole in advance of the said pivotal connection and passing thence around the pulley block and then around the pulley on the pole, and a doubletree secured to said chain connection where it leaves the pulley on the pole.

A three horse evener, comprising a wagon pole, a pulley casing comprising a pair of plates spaced apart and secured to the wagon pole, an equalizing lever pivotally mounted on the wagon pole between the said plates and having one end longer than the other, a swingletree attached to the longer end of the equalizing lever, a pulley block connected to the shorter end of the equalizing lever, a pair of pulleys mounted between the plates of the pulley casing in advance of the pivotal connection of the equalizing lever, a chainvor like connection secured to the wagon pole in advance of the pivotal connection and passing thence around the pulley block and then between the pair of pulleys in the pulley casing, and a doubletree secured to the chain connection where it leaves the pulley on the pole.

i. A three horse evener, comprising a wagon pole, a pulley casing secured thereto comprising a pair of plates spaced apart, an equalizing lever pivotally connected to the wagon pole between the plates of the pulley casing and having one end longer than the other, a swingletree connected to the longer end of the equalizing lever, the shorter end of the equalizing lever being bent rear wardly and having a series of openings, a pulley block adjustably secured in the openings of the shorter end of the equalizing lever, a pair of pulleys between the plates of the pulley casing and arranged side by side, a third pulley between the plates of the pulley casing in advance of the pair of pulleys, a double clip on the Wagon pole, a chain or like connection secured to either connection of the clip and passing thence around the pulley block and then around one of the pair of pulleys and the third pulley, and a double tree secured to the chain connection where it leaves the pulley on the pole, the longer arm of the equalizing lever being changeable from right to left by changing the chain connection from one side of the clip to the other and around the other of the pair of pulleys.
