To all whom 'it'may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Firemens Belts, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a. specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention relates to firemens belts and has for its objectto provide a belt of this nature which is provided with novel means that can be used for attaching the belt to a ladder so that the fireman may have the useof both hands while on the ladder and which can also be used for supporting a hose, carrying fire extinguishers, and for various other purposes.

My invention will first be described and then the novel features thereof will be pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a belt embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line w-00, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section through the hook at the end of the strap; Fig. 4 shows the manner in which the belt is used for securing a fireman to a ladder.

3 indicates a belt of any suitable material preferably of canvas which is adapted to encircle the body of the fireman, said belt being provided with a buckle 4 and a tab 5 to be inserted in the buckle.

6 designates a strap which is fastened at one end to the belt and is provided at its other end with a hook 17 that is adapted to hook into an eye or ring 18 carried by the belt. The strap 6 can .be made of any suitable material, but I will preferably use canvas for this purpose, and in order to make a strong and solid connection between the strap 6 and the belt 3 I propose to employ the construction shown in Fig. 2 wherein X the strap 6 is carried up on the inside of the belt '3 and then is folded over the top edge of the belt 6 at 7 and passed down the outside of the belt, as shown at 8, and then-is I folded over the lower edge of the belt at 9 and passed up between the belt and the body of the strap, as shown at 10. The different layers or plies of strap are fastenedto the belt by suitable rivets 11 and a strong and reliable connection is thus made. If desired I mayemploy a platel2 of metal on the eX- terior of the portion 8 of the strap and another plate 13 on the inner side of the strap 6, andv these plates may conveniently be made from a. piece of metal bent into U- shape. The rivets 11 are shown as passing through both the plates 12 and 13 and through the belt and folds in the strap. Thev ring 18 is shown as inserted between the portion 8 of the strap and the belt and situated between the rivet-s 11. This construction, therefore, not only makes a strong connection between the strap 6 and thebelt but also provides a means for securing the ring 18 to the belt.

The hook 17 is provided with an eye 14 to which the strap 6 is fastened, and in makportion 20 thereof. along adjacent the body of the strap 6 and around through the eye 14, as at 21, and then have the end 22 ,of the strap inserted between the plies 16 and 20. These layers or plies of strap where they are folded on each other may be secured together by Stitches 2?), rivets 24, or both as desired. This makes an extremely strong connection which will withstand any weight that the strap 6 is capable of bearing. 1

The hook 17 which is in the nature of a snap hook is of novel construction. Said hook is provided with the jaw 25 pivoted to the body thereof, as at 26, and having integral therewith a lug or rest 27 that engages a follower 28 confined in a bore or chamber 29 in the shank of the hook, and rests Fig. 4 shows the way in which the belt may be used for tying a fireman to a ladder. In Said figure the fireman is shown at 3 1 and the, ladder at 35. v The strap 6 is passed around one ofthe rounds of the ladder and the hook 17 is hooked into the eye 18, thus firmly securing the fireman to'the ladder and permitting him the use ofboth The hands. The strap 6 and its hook can also be used for assisting the fireman in carrying a hose to the top of the building, or the hook may be fastened to a fire extinguisher or some other article which the fireman wishes to carry up the ladder.

A belt embodying my invention can be inexpensively made and is a very great convenience to firemen.

It will be noted that the jaw 25 of the hook is in alinement with the nose 34 so that when the hook is closed, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, the sides thereof are perfectly smooth.- This permits the device to be used by a fireman in lowering himself down a life line, for the line may be wound around one side of the hook a suflicient number of times to generate a proper amount of friction, and as the hook has no shoulders or projections the rope will slide freely thereover as the fireman slides down it.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2-- 1. The combination with a belt, of a strap 6 having a hook at one end thereof, said strap passing up on the inside of the belt, then over the top thereof and then over the outside and the end of the strap being situated between the body thereof and the inside of the belt, rivets or fastening means extending through the strap and belt, and a ring secured between the outer face of the belt and strap.

2. The combination with a belt, of a ring overlying the upper face thereof, a strap 6 having a hook at one end thereof, said strap passing up on the inside of the belt, then over the top and down on the outside thereof through the ring, the end of the strap being situated between the inside face of the belt and the body of the strap, metal plates overlying the portions of the strap which pass around the belt, and rivets extending through said metal plates, strap and belt.
