MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF '10 FINNELL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
MACHINE FOR REMOVIN'G WATER FROM FLOORS.
Ap'pncation ined october is,
To all whom it may concern: l i Be 1t known that l, Tiioams R. JENKINS, l Jig, a citizen of the United States, residing l at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have l invented certain new and iieet'iil lniproveniente in Machines for Reini'iving later l `from Floors, of which the following` is a f xeaid bracket carries a bearing, 13, through specification.
'lhie` invention relates to a. machine 'for collecting and removing water troni loors after :the latter have been .scrubbed `-or washed. y
A innehine embodying the :features of the present invention is especially ueel'iil during the washing or sscriibbing ot l'loorel of eonl eiderable zirea.` sueh es in publie buildings l where the washing of the tloor iS a eoneiderl :tble task, und the object of the invention if I to provide an improved construction et' nial chine which may be rolled over the lloor and l vremove the writer deposited thereon during the. washing or :scrubbing operation.
The washing' or serubbinn may be eltected in any suitable manner, either by hand or `inaohine, to loosen the dirt and to ellect thev i scouring of the 'Hoor surface, but by inean l of thepreeent invention the ugual inoppnin i and drying of the floor. iuay be dispensed l and deposit it in :i suitable receptacle as it i5 rolled over a floor surface.
The linvention is illustrated in the acconipanying oli-:twingo wherein`- Figure l isxa side eleif'ation oit' the niaohine embodying the invention. 2, is a top plan View thereof. Fig'. 25, a front elevation ot' the saine, and Fig. ft, is a vertical longitudinal section through the receiving reeeptao-le and traine of the inziehine and also through the yielding` oolltetor plates.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral, l,
designates a bottoni horizontal traine, preferably provided with a central opening, Q, for the purpose of reducing` weight and aleo having vertical flanges, 3, at opposite sides. At the rear, the bottoni traine is provided with rearwardlyprojeoting lugel or zirnis, l, which Serve bearings for a horilcoiitall Shaft or axle, 5.y Wheels, 6, are ,mounted on l the outer ends ot the. shaft or axle and are i l preferably provzded with tires, i, ot riil er or equivalent 'iiiaterial A housing if preferlibly provided or top ofthe bottoni .trame andin the. present inl incle,
. Specification of Letters Patent. llgitoil'lled-0c't. .17, 19911.
1908.' Serial No. 457,451.
` stance comprises the vertical side plates, 8,
and vertical l'ront plate, 'lhese 'plates nare their lower ende Secured by screws, l0, lo the'bottoin freine and their upper ends, Hiniilarly secured to an upper traine, 11. i
A braeliegl, is seeiired to the front plate, adjacent 'one vertici-al edge thereof and which a horizontal sha' t, lei, extends. The outer end of thisl ehail't carrier,I a sprocket wheel, l5, while the inner end thereof is provided with a oranli, lo, having a wristpin.
geprooltet chain, i8, passes around; the.,y wheel, l5', and also aroiind a Sprocket wheel, lb, on thel-ehirft ora\'le 5, jfroin which power is derived when the inaehine. is rolled over the tloor. i l
Brackets, 20, and, 2l, are one above the other secured to the Ifront 'vertical plaie, 9, olf the homing; :ind the tubular ovlinder ot a pinnp, 22, extends, vertieally through and is :iiihtnined by mid braieliets. "rlflie lewer end ol' the pii'inp is provided with a. sleeve, 33, ot" rubber which terminales adjacent the lloor. n Above the bracket, .ll'l, the puinp is provided wiili :i nozzle. 2l, which projects through the l'ront wall, t), and opens or disF cliai'gee downwardly .into a suitable rerepthat is "iited on the hol toni traine and also on the arms or logs, d..- Thiny receptaele is provided with a over wall, 2o, at iis rear and a yeiniilar rover wall, 2T, at its front so as to prevent splashing out of' contents during,- the operation ot' rolling; the inaohine bac-,lt and iorth over the, llloor. A'suib able bail, 2S, having a handle is iittaehed to the receptacle 'for convenience iirhnndling the latter. I i
'The lmrtifY-,ular eonsii'uclion ot' the piinip is innnaierial but in pif-.urtice l provide ii piiinp of the double action eliaraeter having a stein, 29, to which a l:tterailly-projeet ing ai'in, 30, is attached and l; conneet Said Lstein arni with the wriet pin, 1T, olf the crank by ineans ot a rod, 31'. so that as the crunk tin-ns the rod will be reciprocated vertically and n vertical i'eeii'nocation of the pinnp stein thereby prodiieed.
.i `suitable bracket. 32, is mounted on top ol.' the housing;` and extendsupwardly therelroni so as to serve as a` guide for the upper end of the i'iiiinp-stein.
rhe bracket, 21, is provided with an extension, 33, which pvota-lly sustains a stein,
34, having a yoke, 35, at its lowerend in which is mounted a roller, 36. lI`he upper end of the stem is provided with a cap, 37, that carries downwardly-projecting lingers, 3S. These fingers have position at opposite sides of the bracket extension, 33, and
limit the turning movement of the stem by` contacting with the sides of the projection. A spiral spring, 39, is coiled about the stem and has position between the upper side of the yokeand the lower side of the bracketprojections so as to provide a support for the pump end of the machine. This support is important in that without'it during the forward movement of the machine, the frictional contact of the flexible strip, 42, with the floor would cause the machine to vibrate vertically and in doing so would allow water and dirt to pass beneath the strips and leave the floor in a streaked condition. By means of the support the pressure on the strips is merely sutcient to keep the latter in contact with the iioor.
In order to increase the efficiency of the machine and the area of its action, I provide means for collecting the water and deliver-ing it to a point adjacent the pump where it may be readily elevated as will now be described.
The vertical lianges, 3, at opposite sides of the machine carry forwardly-projecting arms, 40, which sustain ya horizontal plate,
41. Midway between its ends this plate` i has position immediately behind the pump .i 2 flexible material has the form of strips of and from said point the two ends `ithereof l extend forwardly in an oblique direction so thatv the plate has somewhat the form of a V. One or more sheets, or strips, 42, of flexible material are against the front side of the plate, 41, so
that'the lower edge thereof may rest upon In practice, this i orcontact with the floor.
pers, and a reinforce plate, 43, is placed on =the outer side of the strip or strips to clamp placed vertically them against the plate, 41, by means of screws, 44.
An operating handle comprising side bars, 45, and a horizontal crossbar, 46, is
and by means bfwliich the machine may be face to be operated upon.
In the operation, the machine is pushed over the licor while the scraper strips, 42, contact with the floor surface and collect the water and dirt and direct it toward a central point beneath the pump. 'Ihe revolution of the wheels, 6, drives the shaft or axle, 5, and the sprocket wheel, 19, While the chain 18, drives sprocket, 15, shaft, 14, and crank, 16. The rod, 31, operating between the crank and pump-stem, 29, converts the rotary motion of the crank into a reciprocating motion at the pump. As the water and small particles of dirt are accumulated beneath the pump the latter Will suck the same up and discharge it through the nozzle into the receptacle, 25.
Having thus described my invention what Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
In a machine of the character described the combination with a horizontal frame, of a pair of wheels at the rear end of the frame; a yieldingly-sustained Wheel at the front of the said frame; a pump casing depending below the frame at the rear of the yielding]y-sustained front Wheel; a iieXible l scraper in the rear of the pump casing and a handle attached to the machine and projecting rearwardly of the pair `of rear 4wheels whereby the machine may be rocked on the rear wheels to raise the scraper from i the licor.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature i in presence of two witnesses.
