To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN AALnono, a citizen of the Unit-ed States, and a resident of \Vilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement-in Circuit-Biteakers of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to circuit-breakers, and it has for its object to provide a handoperated and automatically released circuitbreaker with means for preventing the holding of the breaker in its closed position under overload or other predetermined conditions, that shall be simple in construction and effective in operation and that shall not interfere with the normal operation of the breaker The circuit breaker of my invention is providedwith a special construction which prevents it from remaining in its closed po-' sition under overload conditions, even though a retaining'foree be'appliedito the so that protection of the circuit and its-translating devices is insured and is dependent only upon-the automatic tripping device.
A further advantage of the breaker of my invention lies in the fact that it'may be hand-operated under normal conditions to open and close the circuit, at the will of the operator.

A laminated currmt-carrying contact member 6 is attached to the member 7 and is resilient by reason of its structure so that it will compensate for a certain wear which occurs on the contact surface.

The, tripping nmchauism comprises a framc'Q'l, upon. which is adjustably mounted a wcig'l'lt Q2 and to which a U-shaped armature 23 of magnetizable material is at: tached. The frame 91 suspended from a tripping lever 2-1, that is rotatably mounted upon a pin or rod 3 with which the sup porting bracket 2 is provided. it magnetizing winding is coiled ab ut a magnetizas blc core 27, which surrounds the shaft 9.
The inner end of the coil or spiral is electrically connected with the side plates 2 of the bracket. by means of the bushing or core 27 and its outer end is connected rectly (as shown in Fig. l), to a main terminal stud 7 of the breaker. It will be observed that when the breaker is closed an electric circuit may be established from stationary contact member 3 through movable member 6, shunt (3, bracket plates 2, oushing 2'? and the coil 26 to terminal i hen the current flowing through the circuit exceeds a predcterniined amount, the armature 23 is attracted by the core I? and the free end of the trip1')ing lever 21: is moved into engagcmcnt with he projection 19 01 the connect ing link 16. When this occurs the breaker is thrown, by a spring 28, to the position indicated by broken lines in Fig. .Vhen the breaker is closed, it is retained in this position normally by a projection 29 which is attached to the handle lever and engages the pin on the bracket 9., since the pivot pins 14; and 16 are substantially in the same straight line. When the breaker is operated by hand to open the circuit, the lever 16 and the connecting links 17 and 18 retain the same relative positions, while the joint bc tween the links 17 and 18 and the handle lever 14* is broken to form an acute angle, as shown in full lines in Fig. 3.
When the free end of the tripping lever 24 is brought into engagement with the projection 19 of the link 16, the joint between the connecting links 17 and 18 and the link 16 is broken, as well as the joint between the links 17 and 1S and the handle lever l t", and the breaker assumes the position indicated by broken lines in Fig. 3. It is obvious that if the handle is held in. the position shown in Fig. 1, it will not prevent the opening of the circuit by the tripping mechanism.

Tn a circuit-breaker, the combination with a movable switch member, an operating lever fulcrumcd at an intermediate point in its length, a relatively long link connected to the switch member and a pair of short links between one end of the opcrating lever and an intermediate point inthe long link, of an electromagnet which is responsive to predetermined conditions in the circuit, and an armature for tripping said links to open the circuit-breaker independently of the op crating lever.
