INVENTOR HENRY HORTEN HOLMES, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
GUIDE FOR SHARPENING BITS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1914.
Application filed October 15, 1913. Serial No. 795,290.
'0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY HoR'rnN Homnis, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Guide for Sharpening Bits, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a device for holding planing bits in proper position while the same are sharpened, so as to give to the sharpened bit the desired cutting angle; and the object thereof is to provide a device of the class stated which will be simple and inexpensive and which is easily manipulated. I obtain the above object by providing a support having means for securing the bit thereto and a roller member associated with the support and forming means whereby the desired cutting angle of the bit is obtained when the same is sharpened.
The invention consists of the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and fully set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention with the roller partly cut away to show the details of construction; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device in application with the securing means in section; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the device showing a modified structure of means for securing the bit to the support; and Fig. l is a section on line 1il, Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings 5, represents a support, one end 6 of which is beveled so that it converges toward the upper face of the support. The support is preferably hollowed out, so as to reduce its weight without in any way reducing its strength. Associated with the lower face of the support and positioned adjacent the bottom of the bevel of the end 6 is a roller 7 connected to the sides of the support by means of links 8, which are pivotally secured to the said sides by means of pins 9. The said pins 9 make the frictional engagement between the links 8 and the sides of the support such that certain effort is required to move the roller carried by the links on the pins 5). The reason for this will appear hereinafter. The upper face is intended to receive the plane bit 10 with its bevel directed similarly to the bevel at the end 6 of the support. The bit is secured to the support, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by means of a thumb screw 11 carried in a bracket 19 engaging the support 5. Tu the modified form, Figs. 3 and -'l-, the support is provided with a threaded opening 13 into which fits a screw Ll carrying a plate 15, so that when the screw is forced into the support, the plate 15 secures the bit to the support.
lVhen the bit is to be sharpened, the same is placed on the support and secured thereto. The beveled end 17 of the bit is then brought against the lateral surface of the grindstone 16. as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and then the roller 7 is moved on the pins 9 until the same contacts with the lateral surface of the grindstone; thus, the angularity of the bevel will be maintained while the bit is sharpened. If a change in the angularity of the bit is desired, the roller 7 can be moved to or from the bottom of the bevel of the end 6 of the support, and, as previously stated, the pins 9 keep the links in such a frictional engagement that a certain effort is required to move the same on the pins.
Therefore, when the roller is set at a desired point, it will not move unless a certain effort is applied.
It is understood that, if desired, in place of pins 9 a bolt passing transversely through the support can be substituted for the two pins S), having a threaded nut on the other side for tightening the links in any desired position on the support.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a guide for sharpening bits, a support having a beveled end: means for securing a bit to the face of the support to which the bevel converges: a roller positioned adjacent the opposite face of the support and the bevel end of the same; links pivotally connecting said roller to the sides of the sup-port, the engagement of said links with said support being such that an effort is required to move said roller on its pivot, iubsfiantialiy as and for the purpose set ort Intestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HENRY HORTEN HOLMES.
