Description

sind affito PETER W. NEEFUS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No: 109,650, dated November 29, 1870 antedated November 26, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLic- AND ELAsTic noon-MATS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent andl making part of the same.
Be it known that LPETER W.YNEEFUs, of the city, count-y, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Metallic and Elastic'DooaMat; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
, and exact description of the same, reference being had an elastic surface for steps, or tloorsfor for plates..
placed thereon.l l
In the invention described herein, the elasticlprojee-tions may be secured in. the holding-plates or' tioor in a similar manner to the above, but the projections proper' must be entirely different to adapttheln to the purposes`herein mentioned. -Y
The elastic projections on -the stair and floor-plates v are elevated but a little distance, and are intendedto form only an elastic surface which will ,yield slight-ly, but prevent noise and give a rm hold to the feet without danger of slipping. I
` rlhe present invention is a distinctive article, in which the elastic material is disposed in the form of elevated ribs, which, instead' of-being simply compressed by the feet, bend over and form' cleaning surfaces.
This application is confined to the article produced. Various means for seeming the elastic proJections in the plate of wood or metal I intend to make the subject-matter of separate applications for patents.
I nthe drawing- A l Figure l represents a plan view of one of the improved mats. W
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same.
A is a plate, preferably of' metal, intended to be placed upon the oor, and form the body of the mat.
This plate is perforated with a number of narrow slits, through which rise ribs or projections B B,-made of vulcanized India rubber, or other similar elastic material. v
These projections B B are secured to or formed on a sheet of like material, which is placed underneath the body of thermat- Ain such manner that the projections rise through the slits in the latter.
In most instances the plate A is constructed with a recess underneath it to receive the sheet on which the ribs B are secured, as is shown in fig. 2.
The elastic ribs. B B may also be attached separntcly by fitting or forcing them into slits which are wider at the bottom than at the top.
lhe depth ofthe recesses in thebottom of plate A should be slightly less than the thickness of the rubber, so that the weight ofthe mat will come iirst upon the rubber and keep it in place.
v In someinstances I put a sheet of'ribber under the' entire mat.
rIhe mats may be either movable inl the usual way, or screws may be put through the metal portion, or through lugs attached to the same, to secure the mat i-n place, and prevent it from being` shifted or stlen\.
The ribs B B B B may be made of gutta perchaf leather, or preparations of' the same, or 0f' any similar elastic substance.
.lhe slits through which the elastic ribs pass may be of any desired lengt-h, and the ribs put in in scctions to form the whole length.
The ribs may also be arranged in the plate to form different patterns, but I prefer generally to run them in parallel lin'es across the mat.
The sectional shape of the ribs may als) be somewhat varied. c
I claim as new and desire to secure hy Letters Patenti A new article of' manufacture, consisting of a door or door-mat, on which narrow, elastic ribs B or projections of suflicient height to bend when subjected to pressure from the foot, are secured in a plate, A,
i of wood or metal, substantially in the manner shown and described.
