TrMInG DEVICE.
31,@$"2,@@3, Specification of Zetters Patent. Patented Feb. 17, 1914. Application filed April 24, 1913. Serial No. 763,260. I '0 all who m. 2'25 may; concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. MEI-LING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Timing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to timing mechanism for internal combustion engines and more particularly to the class of such engines which are used in motor-cycles and the like.
The objectof this improvement is to'progear. having integrally formed cams adapted to "consecutively operate the intake and exhaust, valves of an internal combustion engire.
The invention consists in the combinaof parts hereinafter or provided with roller bearings when so deslred. The engine is provided with a conventional crank shaft 11 carrying a spur gear 12. on
engines of the four-cycle type the timing gear 13-is of such a size as to rotate in the relation of 1 to 2 of the crank shaft. The size of the gears 12 and 13 may be varied and any other cycle-type used. The gear 13 isl'otatzibly mounted on the Stud 14 secured to the casing of the engine. Said gear is provided with an internal cam 15 formed in one of its sides and an external cam 16 formed on its other side substantially as indicated. Thesecams are of such sizes and timed in a manner to operate the intake and ports of the engine in the convenexhaust tional manner.
Provided on the casing of the engine in substantially the positions indicated in Figs; 1 and 2 are studs 17 pivotally mounted bell crank levers 18 and 19. Each pair of bell crank levers 18 and 19 are mounted on; one of the pins 17 and each having one arm engaging the lower curved end of one of-the plunger rods ,9 which operate the valvestems', 6 and 7. The other arm of each of the bell crank levers 18 and 19 are provided withcamrollers 20. The cam roller 20 on the bell crank 18 'is in engagement with the internal cam 15 and the other roller 20 on bell crank 19 is in engage ment with the external cam 16.
The pivotal points 17 of the bell crank levers l8 and 19' are placed apart and in such positions as will cause the proper operation of the intake and exhaust valves of both of the cylinders 5 as will bereadily'understood upon reference to F igs'l and 2. The cams 15 and 16 are spaced apart sufliciently to effect proper opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves of the engine to cause correct operation of said engine. With this construction 'itwill be observed that only one timing gear and two timing cams is necessary and that by disposing the cam described and claimed.
he invention will .be best understood by forming apart of this specification, and in which- I I Figure l is a side elevation of an internal comustion' engine equipped with my improvement and having a portion of the casing removed to expose certain of the working parts, Fig. 2 is a fragmental section of the same taken on a plane immediately be-l hind the timing gears, Fig. 3 is a fragmental section taken on line 3-3 in Fig. '2, and Fig. 4 is afragmental section taken'on line 4' 4'i n.Fig. 1. g 1
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises, an internal combustion engine having two cylinders 5 althoi'igh' the'device may be modified for use onengines having other numbers of cylinders Wltllfllll'. departing from my invention. The eilgine is provided with cylindcrs'5, each be ving an intake valve operated by the valve stem 6 in the usual. manner and "an exhaust valve operated by an exhaust valve stem 7, in the usual manner. Said valve stems 6 and 7 are provided with compression springs 8 in the conventional maintain them in aloscd position. Each of the valve stems 5 and G is operated by means of a plunger rod 9 mounted in a suitable housing 10.. The plunger rods 9 and housings 10 are of conventional construction. The lower ends of plunger rods 9 may be rounded as shown timed with respect to one another and with respect to themselves.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without ders are properly levers in the positions indicated the cylinone end, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. In
departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended clain'is.
l1 aving described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
'l. in an internal combustion engine, the combination of intake and exhaust valves; a timing gear; an internal cam on said timing gear; an external cam on said timing gear; bell crank levers, each having one arm engaging one of said cams and its other arm opcratively connected with one of said valves, substantially as described.
2. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of intake and exhaust valves; a timing gear; an internal cam in one side of said timing gear; an external cam on the other side of said timing gear; a bell crank lever having one arm operatively connected with said internal cam and its other arm operatively connected With said intake valve; and a bell crank lever having one arm operatively connected With said external cam and its other arm operatively connected with said exhaust valve, substantially as described,
3. In an internal combustion engine, the
noes so combination of a plurality of cylinders; intake and exhaust valves in each cylinder; a timing gear; an internal cam in one side of said timing gear; an external cam on the other side of said timing gear; bell crank levcrs operatively connecting said internal ca-in with said intake valves; and bell crank levers operatively connecting said external cam with said exhaust valves, substantially as described.
4-. in an internal combustion engine, the combination of a plurality of cylinders; iiitake and exhaust valves in each cylinder; a timing gear; an internal cam in one side of said timing gear; an external cam on the other side of said timing gear and formed integral therewith; bell crank levers operatively coni'iecting said internal cam with said intake valves and adapted to operate the latter successively; and bell crank levers operatively connecting said external cam with said exhaust valves and adapted to 0perate the latter successively, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM Iv. MELLING.
