Specification of Letters Patent.-

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL HALL, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Die-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in heel lift cutting devices, and more particularly to die clamping means therefor.
The object in view is the eflicient clamping in position for operation of a die or series of dies for cutting heel lifts.
ith this and other objects in View as will hereinafter in part become apparent and in part be stated, the invention comprises a frame, slidingly sustained, clamping pieces carried thereby, each clamping piece being formed with a recess conforming generally to a part of the exterior contour of the lift die, and means for pressing the clamping pieces in the direction for clamping a lift die therebetween.
The invention comprises certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a diaphragm embodying the features of the present invention, parts being broken away for saving of space. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections therethrough taken respectively on the planes indicated by the lines 22 and 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section through a die punch or stamp.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 1, indicates a substantially rectangular frame, the side members of which are formed with longitudinal grooves 2. The frame is divided, in its width, by longitudinal bars 3, 3, each of which is formed along each edge with a groove 4 corresponding to the groove 2 of the side members. Some of the overhanging flanges formed by the grooves 2 and 4 are cut away adjacent one end of the frame forming notches 5, 5 for the purposes hereinafter specified.
Slidingly mounted within the frame are die clamping members 6 of various shapes according to the shape of the dies to be clamped, each of said members 6 having its ends provided with tongues 7 7 extending into the respective grooves 2, 4, each member 6 being of a width relative to the respective notch 5 and the notch being of a length relative to the several members 6 as to permit ready introduction and removal of said members. The application of the member between the longitudinal bars 3 or between one of said bars and one of the side members of the frame, consists simply of the longitudinal insertion of tongue 7 at one end of the respective member 6 into the particular groove 2 or 4, not formed with the notch 5, in position alined with the notch 5, and the lowering of the free end of the member through the notch 5 and into alinement with the respective groove so that the member may be slid along the groove and into operative position.
As many members 6 may be introduced between the bars 3 and between the side members and said bars as the relative sizes of the parts may permit, and one of the end members of the frame is provided with a series of screws 8, arranged preferably in pairs, one pair being provided for each series of clamping members 6. Thus a set of bolts 8 are disposed to effect the clamping action of a complete series of clamping members 6, the series being made up of those members appearing alined in the frame.
Each clamping member 6 is preferably formed With a flat edge 9 adapted to contact with the contiguous member 6, the opposite edge of each member 6 being curved or otherwise formed to generally conform to the exterior contour of the engaged die, and the curved edge of each member 6 is rabbeted to form a shoulder 10 and a seat 11 for receiving the particular die being clamped.
As clearly indicated in Fig. 1, a pair of clamping members 6 is employed for each die, a pair being made up of two clamping members with their curved or rabbeted edges facing each other for receiving the die, indicated at 12, therebetween. In assembling a series of dies, the clamping members of a given series are applied after the manner above set forth and before the bolts 8 are threaded home, the several dies 12 are introduced between the several pairs of clamping members 6 and seated in the rabbets thereof, and then the bolts 8 are threaded down for firmly clamping all of the members 6 of the given series against the introduced dies. This efiect is obtained regardless of the particular shape of the die, care being exercised to employ members 6 shaped to generally accord with the exterior contour of the die and in instances where dies are to be used for forming fragments of a lift, as a half or quarter lift, there would be naturally straight faces to the die and in such instances appropriately straight faces will be pro vided for the edges of the clamping members 6 to be employed. After the dies have been clamped in position, the operator simply places a sheet of leather or other material to be employed to form the lifts above the die and grasps the handle of the stamp or punch 13, indicated in longitudinal section in Fig. at, and places the same above the leather sheet over the die, and then strikes the upper end of the member 13 for causing the leather to be cut by the die, the lift thus formed dropping through the hollow die and through the space in the frame beneath.
For facility of collecting the cut lifts, hooks let, 14. preferably depend from the several clamping members (3 and bags 15 are sustained by said hooks in position for receiving the cut lifts as they drop through the dies.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame having longitudinally grooved bars, die clamping members having tongues slidingly mounted in said grooves, a notch being formed in the material of one of the bars of a size proportion ate to the size of the corresponding tongues of the clamping members for enabling removal thereof through the notch, the notch being adjacent to one end of the respective bar, and means engaging the frame adjacent said end and engaging the adjacent clamping member for effecting clamping action of the several clamping members.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame having grooved bars, a series of die clamping members having tongues extending into the grooves and slidingly mounted relative to each other and to the bars, said die clamping members being arranged in pairs, each pair being adapted to receive and sustain a die therebetween, means for pressing all the dies along the groove from one end toward the other for effecting a clamping action of the several pairs, the material of one of the bars being notched into the groove, and the notch being of a length equal to the length of each of the engaging tongues for enabling removal of the several clamping members when brought successively into alinement with the notch, the notch being disposed at that end of the bar adjacent to the die pressing means.
