l UNITED srATEs PATNT onirica.
THOMAS' H. GAINES, OF HOPKINSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
GHURN. l 1,082,513. specification mem Patent. raten-ed Dee. so, 1913.
Application aied April 29, 1913. serial No. 764,464.
shown in Fig; 1, the brackets 2 will pull downwardly upon the cap 1 and cause it to bear tightly on the jar. The cap is preferably provided lwith a gasket other suitable materialr which bears Aon the upper endof th and serves to seal the jar when the cap 1 is tightened in the inanner described.
ecured upon cap A1 is a plate 6 having a sleeve 7 which extends downwardly through the center of the cap. Thisv sleeve constitutes a bearing for a central dasher shaft 8 which is provided with a bevel gear 9. This gear meshes with a larger drive gear 10 secured to a shaft 11 which is journaled wit-hin a bearing tending upwardly from the plate 6.
any by means of a crank 13. housing 14 is detachably securedon the plate 6 and serves to inclose the gear 9, and the shaft 8 extends through the top of this housing as shown.l
Extending radially from the shaft 8 are dasher blades arranged preferably in pairs. As shown in the drawings three ofv these lpairs inay be provided, the blades of he upper and middle pairs l'being pitche so as to direct the cream downwardly during the rotation of the shaft 8. The blades of the lower pair 16, however, the opposite direction so that, during the rotation of shaft 8, the cream will be i rected upwardly by the blades 16.
A cross strip 17 is secured to the bottom he cap l and extending downwardly from the ends of this cross strip are hangers 18 provided with inwardly extending retarding blades 20. These blades extend between the paths ofthe blades 15 and 16. It is to be understood that the blades -15 and 16 are arranged spirally about shaft 8.
In using the apparatus the jar or receptacle A is partly filled with the cream after which cap 1 is placed in position on the jar andthe .jaws 4 are clamped upon the jar so as to bind the, gasket thus seal the same.' Shaft 11 is then rotated and moi ion will be transmitted therefrom through gears l0 and 9 to the shaft 8 To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. Gamesa citizen of the United States, residing at Hopkinsville, in the county of Christian and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and specification. s invention relates to churns and more particularly to dasher operating mechanism designed for use in connection with jars such as used extensively in the manufacture of One of the objects of the invention is to ture constituting the present invention can be applied readily to a jar and securely fastened thereto, the said mechanism including stationary and i'evoluble dasher members which are insertible into the jar, and cooperate to thoroughly break the fatty globules and thus expedite the formation of butter. l
A further object is to provide an attachment of this character all working parts of which are carried solely by a cap adapted to be placed upon the jar or other receptacle so that there are no bearings or joints which l'Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that ,changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ii the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown. In said drawings :lfigure 1 is a View partly in section and partly in elevation of' the ap aratus applied to a jar body. Fig. 2 is a si e elevation of the attachment constitutiii the present invention.
Re' erring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a disk-like cap having brackets 2 secured thereto preferably at diametrically opposed points, tiese brackets being extended downwardly from the cap and said shaft will be rotated at a high and having clamping screws .3 extenf'ling speed. During this rotation of the shaft,
the blades 15 will operate to driveI the ereain downwardly toward the bottom of the receptacle A while the lower blades 16 will operate to throw the cream upwardly. Thus the cream will be thoroughly agitated by through the lower end portions thereof, nach clamping screw being swivelcd'within a jaw 4. These jaws are adapted to engage the upper end portion of a jar A so that, when the jaws are tightened against the jar, as
5 of rubber or" reason of the conflicting up and down currents which are set up. Furthermore a whirling action is imparted to the entire body of cream but such action is retarded by the inwardly extending blades 20. This results in still further agitation of the cream. lt will be apparent of course that as a result of this thorough. agitation due to the peculiar action of the blades 15 and 16 and the retarding action of the blades 20, the globules .of cream will be thoroughly broken up and the formation of'butter will be expedited.
rlhe device constituting the present invention can be easily applied tojars already in use and attention is called' to the fact that all bearings and joints are located at points above the level of the liquid contents of the jar or receptacle A. lVhen the cap 1 is removed, all parts of the mechanism are -removed therewith and these parts can be easily reached for the purpose of cleaning and repairing them.
As the cap 1 fits tightly in position by means of the provision of gasket 5, splashing of theI contents of the receptacle A is prevented.
What is claimed is z- 1. The combination with a cap, and a bearing element arranged therein, of a cross strip upon the lower face of the cap, hangers integral with the cross strip and insertible into a churn body, means extending through the bearing, cross strip and cap for fastening them together, a shaft journaled within the bearing and depending from the cap, said shaft and hangers being ree at their lower ends, inwardly extend- .ing blades upon the hangers and in the same plane with the shaft, the blades on one hanger being in almement with the corresponding lblades on the other hanger, and ,upper and lower blades revoluble with the shaft and between the blades on the hanger, |the lowerrnost blades on the shaft being pitched to produce an upward current of liquid and the upper blades on the shaft being pitched to rent of liquid uring the rotation of the shaft in one direction.
\ 2e The combination with a cap, and a roduce a downward curbearing element arranged therein, of a. cross strip upon ers integral with the cross stnip and insertible into a churn body, means extending through the bearing, cross strip and cap for fastening them together, a shaft journaled I within the bearing and depending from the cap, said shaft and hangers being free at i their lower ends, inwardly extending blades upon the hangers and in the same plane with the shaft, the blades on one hanger being in alinement with the corresponding blades on the other hanger, upper and lower blades revoluble with the shaft and between '-the blades on the hanger, the `"lowermost blades on the shaft being pitched to produce an upward current of liquid and the upper blades on the shaft being pitched to produce a downward current of liquid during the ro- I tation of the shaft in one direction, means mounted on the ca for rotating the shaft, and means carried Iby the cap for engaging l the mouth portion of upon the jar. lv In testimony that I claim the foregoing i as my own, I have hereto aiiixed 'my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
