To all where it may come-en:
Be it known that l, hlronoms .l GON- nonr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have in- 1 command the water inlet, so arranged that the opening of the valve to start the siphon will be accomplished without submerging the ball float.
It is a further design of my invention to provide for insuring a closure of the tank fill without permitting a flow of Water to the siphon starter.
it is a further design of my invention to establish an operative relation between the Heat and the Valve-opening means, and the means for giving the starting movement tothe valve that the starting jet will be supplied, the connection with the body of the tank be cut off, and after the tank has emptied the inlet to the body of the tank will be opened, and finally the supply comlpletely cut olt through the action of the ba float upon the tank becoming filled, the cut-off by the float being elfected in a way to insure that the siphon starter will not function until it is again desired tov bring. the starter into action.
The distinguishing features of my invention, and the im ortant structural elements characterizing t e preferred embodiment which is illustrated as an example, will be f more particularly explained in the specific description hereinafter to be given.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Referring to the structural form illustrated, the tank has an inlet pipe 11 and a siphon 12. The inlet pipe 11 delivers to the interior of the tank through a valve casing 14-, which is shown as having a neck 13 extending downward into and communicating with the inlet 11. From the side of the casing 14 a lateral branch 16 leads and constitutesthe tank fill through which water is supplied to the tank.
A valve 15, preferably a piston valve, is mounted for vertical reciprocating movement in the valve casing 14. The starting jet 17 extends upwardl into the shorter leg 12 of the siphon, and its lower end communicates, as at 17", with the branch 16 of the valve 15, and adjacent tothe inner end of the main lateral branch 16. The valve may have a yielding disk 15 to make proper contact with the seat 18..
The branch or tank fill 16 has a vertically reciprocating gate valve 19 formed near its upper end with an opening 20 which is brought into and out of register with the bore of the branch 16 in the movements of the gatevalve as hereinafter explained. A
lever 21 has connection with an actuating member for the main valve 15, and connection also with the ate valve 19, and is adapted to be raised in any approved manner when it is desired to flush. In the form shown a chain 22 connects the lever 21 with a lever 23 fulcrumecl on the top of the tank, the other arm of the lever having a pull chain 24 or its equivalent. The lever 21 is fulcrumed as at 25, on the casing 14- between ears 26 thereon.
. The actuatin member 27 for the main valve 15 is in t e form of a bar pivoted at one end as at 28, to the lever 21, at such a point relatively to the connection 22 as to make the said lever 21 an angle lever in its relation to the chain and the valve bar. The actuating bar 27 passes through an opening in the valve 15, and near the opposite end of said bar a link 30 is pivoted, as at 31, the upper end of the link being pivoted as at 32 to an L-arm 33 on an angle lever 34 which is fulcrumed at its angle, as at 35, on a bracket 36 of the valve casing 14. The upper end of the angle lever 34: carries the arm 37 of the ball float 38. Desirably the connection between the arm 37 of the float and the angle lever 34 is by forming a slot 39 in one of said parts and employing a set screw 40 passing through said slot and into the other member, as for instance, the enlarged end 37 of the float arm, so that a limited range of adjustment is provided for raising and lowering the float on the lever.
On the upper side of the bar 27, within the opening 29 in the valve 15, a hump or protuberance 27 is formed on said bar, to contact with the valve at the upper wall of the said opening, and on the valve casing 14 a set screw 41 is provided at the upper end of said casing, and adjacent to the opening 29 against which the protuberance may contact to limit a movement of the valve bar 27 in response to a rising movement of the lever 21.
The connection between the gate valve 19 and the lever 21 in the illustrated example is effected by means of a rigid arm 21 on said lever and a hanger-link 42 pivoted to said arm at its upper end and connected at its lower end with the upper end of the gate valve, as at 43, so that an upward rocking movement of the lever 21 in response to a pull on the chain 24 will raise the gate valve.
When the parts are in the positions shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and 1t is desired to flush, a pull on the chain 24 will result in throwing the lever 21 upward sufliciently to raise the valve 15 from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, which will supply water for the starting jet, and through the connections between the lever 21 and the gate valve, the latter will be closed. In the upward movement of the lever 21, the actuating bar 27 for the main valve 15 will be drawn longitudinally, there being also a relative pivotal movement between the valve bar and lever, with the pivot 28 as a center; also, by reason of the link 30, the .movements of the bar 27 will have no effect on the lever 34 and the float 38, and will be independent of the float. As the tank empties and the float lowers, the
float will, before reaching the position shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, have brought the opening 20 of the gate valve into registry with the branch 16 for the filling of the tank, and will have raised the valve 15 to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. In raising the valve 15 by the upward pull of the lever 34 acting through the link 30 and bar 27, the lever 21 will be pulled downward into the locked position shown in Fig. 1, whereby the gate valve 19 will be opened, leaving a free flow of water through the opening 20 to the tank. As the tankfills, the rising of the float will close the valve 15, the bar 27 during the closing of the valve rocking on the pivot 28 as a center. Thus it willbe seen that the starting of the siphon by the closure of the gate valve 19, and the opening of the valve 15 sufiicient to supply the jet pipe 17, is independent of the float, while the float will act to open the gate valve to fill the tank and will act to close the main valve when the tank is full.
In the final closing of the valve 15 by the rising of the float, the bar 27 is rocked with the pivot 28 as a center, and in the lower position of the lever it will be seen that it is locked by reason of the relative positions of the fulcrum 25 and the pivot 28, except as so far as it may be rocked by an upward pull of the chain 22.
The described construction affords a practical means for carrying my invention into eii'ecl', and I would state in conclusion, that I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same may be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device of the character described, a float, a fitting having an inlet, a main outlet and an auxiliary outlet, 21 main valve commanding the inlet, an auxiliary valve commanding the main outlet and having movements the reverse of the main valve, a valve actuating device movable in one direction independently of the float, a manuallycontrolled means for moving said actuating device in said one direction, a connection between the said actuating device and the auxiliary valve, a member connected with the said actuating device and engaging the main valve, and means connected with the float and said member to move the latter in the opposite direction from the manuallycontrolled means.
2. In a device-of the class described, the combination with a fitting having an inlet and two outlets, of a valve commanding the inlet and one outlet, a second valve controlling the second outlet, valve-actuating means for the valves, float controlled operating means operatively connected with the said valve-actuating means, and a manually-controlled operating means for the said valveactuating means, the movement of the manually-controlled operating means serving to open the first-mentioned valve and close the second valve independently of the float-controlled means, the float-controlled means serving upon lowering of the float to open the second valve, and serving upon a rising movement of the float to close the first mentioned valve.
3. The combination with a tank, of a valve casing having an inlet, a main outlet to the tank, and an auxiliary outlet to supply a siphon-starting jet, valve means commanding communication between the inlet main and auxiliary outlets, a float operatively connected with the valve means toclose the inlet, and manually-oontrolled means also connected with the said valve means and operable independent of the float to open the inlet and establish communication with %he auxiliary outlet without aifecting the oat.
4., in a device of the class described, the combination of a fitting having an inlet and an outlet, a valve commanding communication between the inlet and outlet, a valve actuating member engaging the valve, a
- manually-controlled lever pivotally connect- 1 ed with the said member near one end of the latter, and float-controlled operating means connected with the said member near. the opposite end, the manually-controlled lever being movable to operate the actuating mem- "ber independently of the float-controlled means to raise the valve, and the float-controlled means being operable to rock the said member on its ivotal connection with the lever to move t e valve independently of the lever.
'5. in a flushing device, the combination with a fitting having an inlet, a lateral branch for discharging water to a tank, and a second outlet to supply a jet to a siphon, of a piston valve for opening and closing the inlet and commanding the second outlet, a gate valve commanding the mentioned branch outlet and formed with an opening to register with the said branch, at bar extending through the piston valve, an angle lever having one arm connected with the said bar, near one end of the latter, the
other arm of the angle lever constituting an operating arm and provided with means for its manual operation, connections between the said lever and the gate valve, a float, a lever rockable by the float, and a link connecting the float lever with the mentioned bar, near the end opposite the lever.
6. In a flushing device, the combination with a fitting having an inlet, a lateral branch for discharging water to a tank, and a second outlet to supply a jet to a siphon, of a iston valve for opening and closing the in et and commanding the second outlet a gate valve commanding the mentioned branch outlet and formed with an opening to register with the said branch, a bar extendin through the piston valve, an angle lever iaving one arm connected with the said bar, near one end of the latter, the other arm oil the angle lever constituting an operating arm and provided with means for its manual operation, connections between the said lever and the gate valve, a float, a lever rookable by the float, a link connecting the float lever with the mentioned bar, near the end opposite the lever, and a set screw on the fitting, the mentioned bar havin a protuberance to engage the set screw w en rocked by the lever.
