PILE-sPLIdE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 1913.
Application filed December 3,1912. Serial No. 734,731.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ILLIAM A. MoDnAnarm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fernandina, in the county of Nassau and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pile Splices, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for splicing piles.
The invention embodies, among other features, a tubular member which is adapted for connection with the upper end of one pile and adapted to receive the lower end of a second ile superimposed on the first pile to splice t e piles rigidly together.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a plurality of piles spliced with my device; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the construction disclosed in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a tubular body 10 preferably cast and having an integral transversely extending partition 11 forming an upper chamber 12 and a lower chamber 13 in the body 10, a drain opening 14 being formed in the body 10 for draining water from the chamber 12 and a drain opening 15 being formed in the body 10 for draining water from the lower chamber 13, the drain opening 14 being formed in the wall of the body 10 immediately above the partition 11 and the drain opening 15 being formed in the body 10 immediately below the partition 11.
In the use of the device described, the upper end of a pile 16 is received in the lower chamber 13 and a bolt 17 is then passed through openings 18 formed in the wall of the body 10 so that the bolt will extend. horizontally through the body 10 and the upper end of the ile 16, in the lower chamber 13. A pin 19 is now driven through 'an opening 20 in the partition 11, with the lower end of the pin extending into the pile 16 and the lower end of a pile 21 is then dropped into the upper chamber 12 so that the upper end of the pin 19 will extend into the lower end of the pile 21, as shown, a bolt 29 being then passed through openings 23 formed in the body 10 so that the bolt 22 will extend through the body 10 and the lower portion of the pile 21, in the upper chamber 12. It will now be seen that the piles 16 and 21 will be rigidly secured to the body l0-by the bolts 17 .and 22 respectively, the said bolts passing transversely through the piles and the body, while the pin 19 arranged vertically to extend through the opening 20 projects into the upper end ofthe lower pile 16 and the lower end of the upper pile 21. By providing the drain openings 14 and. 15 any water contained in the chambers 12 and 13 will be forced therefrom when the piles are received in the chambers, it being readily understood that the herein described manner of splicing the piles is ofttimes accomplished beneath the surface of the water or in places where the chambers of the body 10 are liable to become filled with fluid or a semi-watery mud.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a device for splicing piles, the combination with a tubular body provided with a series of drain openings, of a pile adapted to be received in the lower end of the tubular body, a second pile adapted to be received in the upper end of the tubular body, a partition extending transversely in the medial portion of the body to space the said piles, means for bolting the piles to the body, and a pin passing through the partition with the ends of the pin passing into the said bolts.
