UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. FIANDT AND YVILLIAM L. MEEK, OF UPI'ON, WYOMING.
STIRRUP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES L. FIANDT and \VILLIAM L. Mann, citizens of the United States, residing at Upton, in the county of lVeston and State of lVyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in stirrups and more particularly to safety stirrups and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a stirrup in which the side bars and foot piece are made in sections pivotally connected together so that the slight movement of the foot within the stirrup will move the sections so as to release the foot from the stirrup.
Another object of the invention is to provide a stirrup of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efiiciency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simplein construction and operation.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and ar rangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stirrup constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the foot rest having the upwardly projecting side members 2 which are pivotally secured within the recess 3 formed in the lower ends of the side bars 4. The recesses 3 are provided with an inner inclined wall 5, the inner end of which ex tends vertically as shown at 6 to form a suitable stop 7 against which one edge of the side pieces 2 of the foot rest are adapted to abut to limit the swinging movement of the foot rest in one direction.
The foot rest 1 is pivotally mounted upon the pins 8 and adapted to swing in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 and it will be apparent that the outward swinging movement of the rest will be limited by Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 3, 1913.

Serial No. 746,017.
the inclined wall 5. Arranged between the outer ends of the bars 4 and integrally connecting the same is a central portion 9 hav- 1ng a web 10 formed integral therewith and projecting outwardly between the ends of the bars 4:, said web being provided upon opposite sides of its longitudinal center with openings 11 adapted to receive the retaining straps from which the stirrup is suspended.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that we have provided a safety stirrup in which the side bars and foot piece are made in sections and pivotally connected together so that slight movement of the foot within the stirrup will move the sections so as to release the foot therefrom. It will also be apparent that we have provided a simple and durable stirrup which can be quickly and readily attached to a suspension strap or readily detached therefrom. The device in itself is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
While we have shown and described the preferred form of our invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying our invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What we claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of side bars having tapering recesses formed in the lower ends thereof, a foot rest having side pieces, the upper ends of which are pivotally secured within said recesses for swinging movement, means for preventing the swinging movement of said foot rest in one direction, a central portion integrally connecting said side bars, a web formed on said central portion and provided with openings arranged upon opposite sides of the longitudinal center thereof.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of side bars, having tapering recesses formed in the lower ends there of, a foot rest having side pieces, the upper ends of which are pivotally mountedwithin said recesses for swin 'ngmovement, a stop formed at one side each of said recesses,
and against which said side pieces areadapt- I our signatures in the presence oi two wited to abut to prevent the swinging move nesses.
ment thereof in one direction, a central por- OBAPI Fq I F1 ALNDT tion integrally connecting said side bars, a EAEQ MEEK Web formed on said central portion and provided with openings arranged upon each l Vitnesses:
side of the longitudinal center.
