Description

H. G. BAKER.
HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 7, 1910.
Patented May 6, 1913.
I m Lawton Haw/6y CI Ba/ier UNITED STATES PAT n'r OFFICE.
HARVEY C. BAKER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL CLINCH HINGE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OI ILLINOIS.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY C. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of hin es known as clench hinges.
Ti, provide a four point clench hinge, with two centrally positioned ornamental bracing plate sections located between the clench points.
With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combinat on and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the appended claim, it being further understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described, may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 shows a plan view of a hinge embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows an end view of one of my clench hinges. Fig. 3 shows a fragmentary portion of a box with a lid connected by means of one of my clench hinges, while Fig. 4 shows a prospective view of one of the hinge'members as used in the present invention. In certain classes of boxes, which are provided with hollow lids, and which are usually made of .wood veneer or so-called straw-board, it is quite essential that the hinges are secured in a manner so that the wood veneer will not split in the use of the box. v
In my present invention, I construct a hinge which has twofioppositely positioned clench points located at points intermediate of the ends of the hinge. 1
In the accompanying drawings the letter a, designates a fragmentary portion of a e primary object of my invention is to box, and a, a lid connected thereto. These two fragmentary portions are shown as connected by means of a hinge.
The hinge as shown in Fig. 1 comprises two equiformed members 1, pivotally united by means of a suitable pintle 3, held within the in sleeves 2. Each hinge member is provided with two such knuckles, as clearly disclosed in Fig. 4. Extending from the leaf of eachhinge section at a point opposite the end provided with the knuckles 2,'are the Patented May 6, 1913.
clench points 4, 4. These clench points 4 extend in a common plane while proje ting from the leaf of each hinge section is the ornamental bracing plate portion 5, which as clearly shown in Fig.4, is located between the two clenchin points 4.
In handling a ox by its lid provided with hinges of my present improved construction, the strain is partly carried by the leaf extension 5, so that each hinge plate operates somewhat in the manner of a lever, the clench points 4 serving as fulcrums. In securing the hinges to the box, the points are bent over and made to extend parallel to the plate extensions 5, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. As shown, the leaf extension 5 is o a width considerably less than the width of the hinge plate 1. These extensions 5 may be of any suitable length. The clench points 4 after being bent are firmly embedded within the box portions as disclosed in Fig. 3. M
The hinge members are made of suitable sheet metal and stamped and formed complete in one operation, and the attachment of the hinges to the boxportions is efiected in any suitable workmanhke manner.
A hinge constructed according to my invention is simple and inexpensive in construction, and efficient and durable in operation, and the hinges can be readily and securely fastened to the box and lid members.
Having thus described my invention, what I- claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:'
A hinge comprising two equiformed members each having two knuckles extendin from one edge, a pintle passing through said wmmw knuckles to hinge'tlly connect said members, In witmss whereof I am my signture two clench goints extending from each memin the presence of two Witnesses.
her along t e edge opposite said knuckles, a j HARVEY C. BAKER.
