SURFACE-CLEANER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN L. DIETZ, residing at Chicago, of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Surface-Cleaners, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speclfication.

My invention relates to surface cleaners, and more particularly to window cleaners.

The particular embodiment of my invention provides means whereby such cleaners may be adjusted so as to make it possible to l(glean surfaces that are not readily accessile.v

My invention consists primarily in a holder which is constructed so as to grip a member into which a piece of resilient material is inserted. The holder is arranged so that it may engage the member in which the resilient material is mounted at any desired point.

My inventionwill be clearly understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of the device embodying the features of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of the device; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 to show particularly the engagement of the tightening means with the jaw members.

The holder 1 is made preferably of metallic tubing, in which a handle 2 is suitably mounted. ()ne end of the holder 1 is flattened at 2' and has-secured thereto a pair of jaw members 3, 3 held in place by rivets 4, 4, or by other suitable means. The jaw members are bent at 5, 5 and terminate in flattened portions 6, 6. The port-ions 5 and 6 of each jaw member are adapted to engage a tubular member 7, which is open at one side and is provided with lips 8, 8 which .engage a resilient member This member may be of rubber, or simllar material, so that the surface to be engaged willvbe properly cleaned or dried. As shown in Fig. 2, the portions 5, 5 engage the circular portion of the member 7 and serve to hold itsecurely when the jaw members are tightened by the mechanism particularly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which consistsof a bolt 10 which has a square head 11 one edge of' Specification of Letters Patent. whichengages the portion 5 of one of the aw members. This bolt is also provided with a short squared portion 12, which engages in squared openings 13, 13 in the jaw members. shank is engaged by a thumb nut 14 and, when it is screwed down into place, the jaw members are tightly gripped about the memher 7, thereby holding the parts securely together. By unscrewing the thumb nut Lathe jaw iieembers open up so that the member 7 can to adjust the holder 1 to any portion of the member 7 thus obtaining any adjustment desired. This arrangement makes it very easy to clean surfaces that are not readily accessible. also makes it very easy to remove the cleaner from the holder so that it may be used upon surfaces that do not require the use of a handle or holder in order to get at them.

This arrangement also provides for the re- 80 versibility of the members 9 and 7 when after long usage the resilient member becomes worn.

While I have herein shown and described one it is apparent'to those skilled in the vart that changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invenion.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 9a ters Patent:

In a surface cleaner, the combination of a member for engaging a surface to be cleaned or dried, a tube having flattened portions adapted to be pressed into firm engagement with said member, and a holder comprising a pair of jaw members, a bolt having a squared portion for engaging in square openings in said jaw members, a nut for drawing together said jaw members against the tube, said jaw .members being secured to a flattened portion of a tubular member.

In a surface cleaner, the combination of a holder having a flattened portion, a pair of jaw members secured to said portion, a tubular member, a resilient member engaging in said tubular member, said jaw members engaging with said tubular memher, and a device for drawing together said jaw members so that the tubular member will be firmly pressed into engagement with the resilient member. 7

In a surface cleaner, the combination of a holder having a flattened portion, a nair of jaw members secured to said portion, a tubular member, a resilient member engaging the said tubular member, said tubular member having two flattened portions extending therefrom, said. jaw members engaging said tubular member, and a bolt and nut for drawing together said jaw members so that the tubular member will be firmly pressed into engagement with the resilient member.

6. In a surface cleaner, the combination of a holder having a flattened portion ex tending at an angle from the body of said holder, a pair of jaw members mounted on said portion, said jaw members being adapted to engage a surface-cleaning device, and a bolt and nut for drawing together said jaw members into tight engagement with the surface cleaning device.
